Since then my reading comprehension and speed improved. Now in my 40s I read 10 books a month. My oldest son (17 yo) had been very discouraged that he had difficulty reading because he has Dyslexia, I got him an audible account, he loves that he has this option. I used to be so addicted to playing games and in recent years, on social media. And over time, my mental health just plummeted. I used to read instruction manuals for games while eating breakfast I didn't sit down much and read proper books; except maybe a small one here & then. Just a few weeks ago, I figured 'Screw it' and just sat down and read a book I purchased a few months ago at a convention. Then after that, I got onto reading the Harry Potter books after years of telling myself "I need to sit down and read those as they're different from the films". And I find I'm a whole lot more focused while reading than when I do anything else; even video games don't hold my attention like they used to. So, it feels very refreshing to just sit down, relax and read for a change as my mind is one to struggle with concentration; at least in recent years, it's been difficult. Nearing the end of book four (The Goblet of Fire), and I don't want them to finish, I'm having too much fun with them. But I'll move onto something else soon enough after the final book; I have a decent backlog that have been put aside for years.

@@Pablo-ig7tx the advice is read books and over time your concentration will increase and your memory and your love and passion to read more books... i have a similar story of this guy, i used to play video games and smoke weed and i abandonned books until 1 month ago i decided to quit smoking and gaming and start working out and reading books. At the 1st 2 weeks i though about stoping cause i coundlt see any results and my lake of concetration and bad memory put me down but i watched a video about saying that reading books and traing and eating healthy will heal this problem so i kept going... in 2 week later i could see a huge increase in concentration and memory and i can read more and more every time. So that is my advice to you based on my expirence. I wish you a healthy life. And excuse my english. Peace from Morocco.

Besides my family, books are my life. I started my children off in life reading to them every night even as babies and now they're college graduates with Masters Degrees and have high-income careers. If anything this country should do, I would say 'Make America Read Again'. Without reading and acquiring knowledge, we are sitting ducks - allowing others to shape our lives, opinions and thoughts. Those with knowledge and think for themselves are invincible. These individualistic thinkers are what governments fear. They prefer the group-think of the masses. And we know, or should know, what happens when group-think occurs. Reading - and imagination - are the keys to understanding yourself and the Universe around you.

I have loved reading since I learned to read. That was seventy years ago! I don’t have any idea of how many books I have read. In one book I read, someone had written inside: “He who loves a book will never lack a friend.” I think that is true. My favorite book is probably “Of Human Bondage” by W. Somerset Maugham, although I like most of his books. “The Painted Veil” is another favorite.

The last time I read a book was yesterday, I started City Of Bones and finished it yesterday. It was about 480- 500 pages. But the thing is, I rarely even gain anything from reading books, I read books everyday! I remember almost everything in every book I read. I rarely even gain knowledge, usually I just gain it if it is a historical fiction book. I sometimes learn the meaning of some words from time to time. But, usually I just search a word if it is reallllly important. (Titles, etc)

I have started reading books and found them to be very helpful. My family, co-workers and others I interact with, have noticed the positive changes of communicating with them. So Sir...you are 15 times right about the benefits and importance of reading books. Thank you so very much for reinforcing my reading. I am currently reading "How to win friends & influence people" by Dale Carnegie. Its an old book but better than gold. I keep rereading it and each time I learn more from it.

It was hard to let all of them go, but I'm happy that some people are reading them right now, enjoying them and increasing their knowledge. The 2 books I didn't give away were: the first book I ever read (Winnie the Pooh) and the 1st Harry Potter book.

Alslamu Alikum.. Thank u for such awesome video.. And i agree with u on many points of what u mentioned there..
I'm not sure if knew this but the 1st verse revealed upon prophet Muhammad peace and blessings upon him and the beginning of his message was "Read"..
It is narrated that When prophet Muhammad peace and blessings upon him was in the cave of Hiraa’. The angel came and said, ‘Read!’ The Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘I am not a reader.’ He said, Then he took hold of me and squeezed me until I could not bear it any more then he released me and said, ‘Read!’ I said, ‘I am not a reader.’ He took hold of me and squeezed me a second time until I could not bear it any more, then he released me and said, ‘Read!’ I said, ‘I am not a reader.’ He took hold of me and squeezed me a third time until I could not bear it any more, then he released me and said,
‘Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists).
He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.
Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.
He has taught man that which he knew not.’
    [al-‘Alaq 96:1-5 - interpretation of the meaning]

This is truly a valuable public service, I've been an avid reader all my life & I'm a retired educator. I wish I had this video to share with my students when I was still teaching but I will share it with others who might appreciate it. By-the-way, when I was a boy growing up, I had a lazy eye that would go in when I played ball and concentrated for too long. Kids would tease/mock me horribly and I always sought refuge in books. As a result, I was reading at the 11th grade, sixth month level when I was in the sixth grade. Thanks so much for this wonderful gift! Oh yeah, and I became a writer which i had dreamed of since I was in the second grade.

The consequence is that my vocabulary and writing skills are poor. I have a difficult time to organize my ideas for both writing and speech. I am 75 years old. Reading reserved and helped me to get and education while serving a twenty-five year sentence for robbery and murder from 16 years old to thirty years old. I went to the 1960 penitiary libriary in Richmond,.Virginia when I first got there, checked out books on biology, botany, mathemstics, and other science, eventually becoming a fledgling mathematician. I think I inspired the penologists to bring in college coarses after their seeing my continuous academic progress. I virtually turned the prison into a college campus while I was there. I read everything -- economics, power politics, Dale Carnegie, and many works on psychology. When released, I attended the Virginia Commonwealth University for four years and graduated with a degree in mass communications (journalism) and a minor in mathematics. Reading is also fun. I do yoga. Therefore, I look to several more decades of enjoying life and reading.

Reading is one of the best things that a man can do. When I become a father, I wanted to have my children read "Matilda" to teach them the profound power of reading.
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." - Joseph Addison
This couldn't be more true. Reading is the surest means of developing one's intellect, of improving the mind. With reading, human brains are radically transformed; they are rewired and their various faculties, focus, memory, and accuracy are substantially improved.
"The man who doesn't read has no advantage over the man who can't read." - Mark Twain
The brain is like any muscle in the body in that it must be exercised in order to retain its vitality. "Use it or lose it." If we don't exercise our minds with reading, we'll lose the strength associated with reading.
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." - George R.R. Martin
It has been proven that the human brain cannot distinguish between imagination and reality. Your brain operates in the same manner in an imaginative situation as it would if that situation were real, and you were actually experiencing it. A study was conducted with basketball players of the same skill level, in which such players were organized into two groups. One group physically practiced their free throws, whereas the other group merely imagined that they were practicing their free throws. At the end of the week, when the time came to evaluate the skills of all of the players, all of them, both those who practiced physically and those who practiced imaginatively, performed at the same level. Reading is a means of exploring the world while remaining physically idle; it is a means of doing anything.
"Formal education makes you a living; self-education makes you a fortune." - Jim Rohn
Education, the cultivation of knowledge, is a vehicle to permanent, lasting happiness. So many intellectuals historically have discovered that all humans, with their human nature, possess a passion for learning and the pursuit of truth, whether they acknowledge it or not. Plato presented education as a means of attaining perfection and fulfillment; education is an indispensable treasure that cannot be taken away. The value of education nowadays is viciously underestimated.
"Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers." - Harry Truman
This is also true, for as Jim Rohn, who is generally a fascinating figure, said that "reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary." Those who are extraordinary and thus live extraordinary lives have extraordinary minds, which were attained by means of reading.
