When the history of Babymetal is writen, Sonishphere will be in there as one of the most important thing that they did. At the time BM were making waves in the Japanese underground metal scene and had got popular with some overseas fans. Just after they released Give me Chocolate there was a facebook page started to try and get Sonisphere to invite them, which quickly got over 2k sign up, which worked. Babymetal took a big leap of faith and booked a small tour inc Sonisphere. They were suposed to play on the Sunday in one of the side tents, then the concert they had booked for the Monday sold out within a few hours. Within a week BM upgraded the venue for thier London gig and Sonisphere, realising that the 5k tent may not hold every one that wanted to see them, moved BM to the 1st band on the Saturday main stage.
Sonisphere is/was a big metal festival and was well know for throwing things at bands they don't like. Normaly the size of crowd that go and see the 1st band is around 10k, and that's if your known. Before theey came on stage the kami band came out and did thier warm up/equipment check, something they shouldn't of done, because the check was so heavy and good it started to attract a big crowd to around 50k. The girls, who couldn't see the crowd, had no idea of how many had turned up, and with all the warnings that the crowd could turn hostile if they didn't like you, were so full of nevous energy they put on one of if not the best performances of the weekend, completely winning over the crowd by the end of the first song. And that performance help gave them a big push towards a world wide audience.
By the way if you like this type of performance, no lights or set up, you need to watch MetRock 15, which is 42 min's of Babymetal in thier purest form, band, girls and crowd.

This performance is special for BABYMETAL fans (and probably the band, too), because it was their first performance outside Asia. The British Metallers were known a tough crowd that will have no remorse if they don't like what you have to offer, so BABYMETAL were widely expected to more or less be booed off the stage. Instead it resulted in a moshing crowd that was left shouting for more in the end. It's basically BABYMETAL's successful introduction to the West and always touching to watch.

@MacTaipan You're forgetting a couple of smaller but important shows.
There was a bit of a warm up overseas before this big festival show in the UK on July 5th.
They played Paris on July 1st, and Cologne on July 3rd.
Those were the shows were Yui and Moa took over lead vocals on 'Headbanger!!!' to celebrate their fifteenth birthdays.

And even Japan actually (if you don't see an Anime convention as a festival).

@@autohmae Well, Singapore was their first show (not a festival) outside Japan..its funny how they call that "Over Seas". To me 'over seas' is like America to Europe or Asia... but that's what they called it, their first "Over Seas" show. I guess that's right since all of Japan are islands. LoL!!

And… that's how you win over a skeptical audience of UK metalheads.
Did you notice that Yui was dancing so hard her costume started to unravel?
She didn't let it make her miss a beat though.
Some of the other commenters have already referred to this, but it was a game changing performance for the group.
There is an alternate "Nemesis" studio version of this song, found on limited editions of the single.
It features guitars recorded by former Arch Enemy guitarist Christopher Amott.

I think we tend to recommend the big shows in Japan because they are the ones most likely to have a good quality pro-shot video with good audio, but also because they really are so spectacular - and we are proud of what they have achieved.
Seeing your reaction to this one I realise now that you are one of the many who would better appreciate what they can do and how good they are as a live act in their shows at smaller, more intimate venues without all the flames, bells and whistles etc (not that Sonisphere is small or intimate, there were 60,000 metalheads there pretty much challenging them to entertain them, but it is a smaller stage and being daytime there were no lighting effects, flames or explosions etc).
I will try to bear this in mind for any future recommendations for BABYMETAL.

What was special about this performance, was that for both the international audience and for BABYMETAL themselves, it was a 'break-through performance'. It was their first rock festival, in the West no less; it was the largest audience that they'd played to to that date (IIRC); it was at Sonisphere, with an audience that was known for making it quite clear if it didn't like a band ..... In other words: quite the challenge for them. At first, they were booked on a secondary, smaller stage. But there was so much hubbub around them before the festival that they promoted them to the main stage. - Some say that it was "the day before" or even "shortly before they had to go on stage", but it was changed a couple of weeks before. - The Kami band already drew quite a crowd with their sound-check. The girls didn't realize how big the crowd would be and they hadn't been in front of "grizzly metal heads" before. There is a picture of them standing at the side of the stage, just before their set, looking at the crowd. They looked scared and like they were thinking, "ooooh, crap, we're doomed!" Suzuka later recalled: "I thought to myself, 'well, we'll just have to give it our all'. At first there were still a lot of people with their arms crossed, giving us a stern look but, as we went on, more and more Kitsunes [the hand gesture they use, red.] went up". So, one 16 y.o. girl and two 15 y.o. girls in red tutus (and the incredible Kami-band, of course) managed to not only make the audience participate but also screaming for "one more song!" by the end of their set. (Which was only five songs long.) And the sales of BABYMETAL merch reached record highs for the rest of the festival. And for the girls it was an important moment as well. Suzuka later talked about it also being a turning point for them. She said, "from that moment on, we thought, 'ok, we got this, we can do this'". It was a huge confidence boost for them. (And it changed their view on "scary looking" metal heads. :-P)

What is interesting is I found an interview which said that in Sis. Anger the singing was intended to be flat. Kind of a strange choice.
Yes, you saw it ! Babymetal is at their best as a live band and some of their big shows that is sometimes lost. Tokyo Dome, while prestige is maybe to big for them to showcase it (it also was also an all seated show, because that is the only thing allowed in Tokyo Dome, which is definitely not ideal). I believe because of such live performances they are accepted by the metal crowds. And also a good pull for any festival to put on their bill. The 2018 tour ended at the Good Things festival in Australia and as Sonisphere in 2014 they had the biggest and most enthusiastic crowds and some of the best band reviews by the press of the festival.

Given what you said here about watching Babymetal I think you would appreciate their performance of Gimme Chocolate on Colbert (US national TV show) - it's all on display in tight, up close, and personal there. Or even better, their exceptional daytime concert at Metrock.

Ahh yes The Unravelling (Y's skirt) Moa peeked at it once and then completely ignored it. There are a few names for the 2 'backing' girls. You can just say their names almost as one "Yui and Moa", you can go "Yui-Metal and Moa-Metal" or you can say "Black Babymetal" and we will know what you mean but best of all you can say MoiMoi.
Nice review and others have mentioned the significance of this festival appearance. I still cringe every time at that poor sod at the beginning who doesn't quite negotiate the complete flip and lands on tailbone.

Funny you say Rondo of Nightmare is a strange name; they're all English words. A rondo is a recurring theme or couplet in a composition or poem. "Qouth the Raven, Nevermore" would be a rondo.
This is a good performance by them The "back two" are called Moi Moi - they coined it themselves, first character of Moa and last character of Yui, we just don't have another term. And Yui's skirt was coming apart through the song, it never bothered them. Consummate professionals.
If you see Babymetal play in NA or EU this is what you get. The big productions just one or two shows a year in Japan. Everything else is pretty minimal. They really don't need a lot of stuff.

As many have said this show is the one for any big fan that this is when the metal world was introduced to Babymetal. 5 songs changed the metal world. There are many stories leading up to this show, reasons why at last minute change
Whatever, during the second song, gimmie chocolate, Su had this crowd singing japanese and there is a shot that shows her face showing she got them at that moment. Only better version of this song is from tokyo dome 2016 though some may disagree.

This show was a pretty big deal for the band. They weren't originally supposed to be on such a big stage, and they were sort of pushed out in front of a huge UK metal festival crowd at the last minute. They were warned that it might not go well, and to watch out for bottles thrown by the audience. Got to figure that as 14 and 16 year old girls is a foreign country, singing in a foreign language, it must have been pretty terrifying. Seeing the audience turn around for them was a huge boost for their confidence.
