I can summarize all that I've read is that officially fnd (between Dr's) is classed as Psychiatric (DMS5 manual) also known as conversion disorder/ hysteria. That is the hard bit. However, in practice, depending on what's led to the the point of getting that diagnosis, which is the relevant part, it's often completely physical causes, note two of these 'testimonal' cases mentioned lyme's disease, other's had appalling vaccine reactions (this is not a comment about vaccines) just one young lady ended up without being able to move barely a muscle and then stuck in wheel chair and bed and they called it FND. It's basically a medical catch-all for when they don't get it, or conventional testing does not show up anything, they consider relevant. Functional MRI shows up that the person with Functional Neurological Disorder is activating different brain parts for movements as oppose to healthy individual or person who is pretending not to be able to move. Stress/trauma may or may not precede the illness. However, the roll out of treatment is so varied world-wide ranging from Physio to Neuropsychiatric Counselling, to other things I don't know. It's rare to find treatment providers who make treatment fun, tailored to the individual, accepting the physical side (without judgement), and kind of encourage the person to overcome whatever it is (physical issue) by employing their own motivational beliefs etc. Maybe someone will do a patient based study on this one day, and be honest with the patients at ground level they are basically seen as pysch. patients who don't accept their condition.. It's totally wrong, in my opinion, when the physical components are so obviously real and all the more painful when not treated holisitically. I hope things go well for all of you struggling with this. The best thing usually is a neuro-physio who can deal with your case in person and should you need to take supportive counselling, the same as anyone, do not see that as the big driver behind your illness. Help yourself physically in a gentle manner and take appropriate steps with other areas of your life, when possible.
