I used to have an 80's ford with a stock tape deck and Celtic Frost tape sounded fucking amazing and gritty as hell. I almost kept that shit car just for that reason. It's almost ruined the album for me now because I can't recreate it on any other deck I've tried....lol yes I still have my morbid tales tape after all these years.

FearNoGrave yeah but I don't know if it was entirely jealousy... Varg did something else with his music and later went to dark ambient. Mayhem went all out, burzum is more laid back.

Aske is Burzum's best metal release in my opinion. It's 20 minutes of perfection, not a single mediocre moment.

First time hearing this one, improves upon a lot of what I liked about his first release. His musicianship got a lot better, every song has good riffs and the drumming is heaps better. Going to order a cassette of this EP right now

I remember this time when it was released I was 14years old metal kid. I went to small metal music store and they had zines with Mayhem, Burzum and other underground bands, wasn't easy to get this zines, you have to ask first about them and they were hide under the shelf. I get the first one and this really scared me, all this fucking sick pictures black and white with knifes, swords, black magic, occultysm.. with blood and burned churches it was very brutal and extreme, very underground in this time, scary. Also metal gigs was more dangerous in 90s, now I live in Sweden and on metal gigs people are very friendly haha, mostly with new clean trendy shirts, patches and theres no more spirit from this times ( no dangerous and mystery) dunno if it's better or not. But I still prefer the old good times.
when I was 16-17 I bought Filosofem tape in our fav. local small store in Bratislava..I thought the tape is damaged or something. After Cradlle`s Dusk (which I still have to nowadays with its superb booklet) it was like wtf should be this? I`m sad that Filosofem gone somewhere :/

This is so beautiful!
It was interesting to me to learn more info on the recording process in the Helvete documentary. We know he liked to use headphones as a mic etc, and i kinda though they were bedroom 4 track albums when i was younger. But this and many other early BM records were recorded in a philharmonic concert hall by a great sound guy 'Pytten' that also recorded Mayhems classic album and others. So i think they all captured the sound and space of that giant hall so well and it added to the ambiance quality of the early BM music. I think it was very cleverly recorded to sound 'kind of shit' but also 'kind of amazingly clear' at the same time. Pytten had a big role in shaping that sound of Norwegian Black Metal, I'm glad i found out about him and what a legend he is.
I think there's a difference between Grieghallen and Grieghallen studios. If I'm not mistaken, Mayhem's Dom Mysteriis... album was the only one that was actually recorded in the concert hall.
burial created some ground breaking music that sounded of a higher fidelity using similar equipment just a few years later... idk, i guess i'm trying to say stuff tracked analog in a studio went through analog fx so it's not like if you went with a tascam and recorded digitally with a natural reverb of the environment which would've been cool af... so in short it's still varg in a studio laying down tracks

"Stemmen fra tårnet" has got to be one of the catchiest black metal tunes ever. I wish that at least some of new black metal bands could reach this level of musicmanship.

Early Burzum stuff is cornerstone black metal - some of the best examples of the genre ever recorded. I don't agree with the man or his politics but that doesn't affect the quality of the music. It's mind boggling how well Varg plays all of these instruments, and his voice is just insane. So harsh and raw.
