    I thought I knew a lot about WWII, but this series proved me wrong. It’s fascinating. An American, I’ve never heard Pearl Harbor referred to as “Pearl”, though; a little irritating, but that’s all the fault I find with this amazing series.

      I have heard 'Pearl' all my life. Including from people who have been there. Not surprising cause it sounds cool

      It was referred to that way in one of my favorite movies: "The Hunt for Red October".

    @2:42 Note the sailors wielding fire axes and the lumber lying there waiting to be used. Much has been said about the vulnerability of the US wooden flight decks but one thing people don't seem to realize is that they were much easier and faster to fix because of it.

    • @doncornell6793
      @doncornell6793 9 месяцев назад

      It is a trade off as there are pros cons with wooden decks. The pros are that they reduce the weight on top which makes for better ship handling and the teak wood doesn’t splinter like a steel deck reducing shrapnel when bombed. They also had an armored hanger deck that protected the vitals below decks. They also allowed them more hanger space and more airplanes than the British carriers that had armored decks. I do think that if they could have foreseen the use of Kamikaze attacks they would have armored the decks as the British carriers pretty much shrugged off kamikaze attacks.

    At 1:11:15 you see a group of Marines scrambling up a sandy hill, which is actually a buried massive concrete Japanese bunker system (Betio Island, Tarawa), at the very top of the crest, just above them, is what looks like a clump of weeds & to the left of the tree is in fact 2 Japanese Machine Gunners, you see the startled response from the flame thrower which cooked that one alive and also you don't see it cooking the one by the tree This was In-Your-Face Hard Warfare at the most Guttural Level possible

    Several times the visuals depicted events much later in the war than implied by the audio commentary. Clearly the person choosing the visuals did not check for correspondence!

      Well close enough footage is probably the best one can do seeing how the amount of footage is limited to a certain extent

      Just about all these historical documentaries do the same, there is not an overabundance of WWII era video from every theatre or engagement & the majority will never know. Where no original footage exists, they have to show something.

    Error notice... the island where Pearl Harbor is located (Oahu) is not the largest island. That is the island of Hawaii

    🙊🙉🙈 The only "complaint" I have is the British accents that prevails a lot of these very informative historical movies. 👍😎

    Yes...Hawaii (The big island) is larger than Oahu
    Yes...every documentary on WWII uses 'stock' footage. You (the educated viewer) will know when the commentator says something about the battle for the Philippines but shows footage from Tarawa you will know the difference. They are just trying to give the viewer (you & I) a pleasurable viewing experience. There's only so much WWII era video available, not like there's some warehouse somewhere stuffed floor to ceiling with motion pictures of every damn event that occurred from 39-45.

    They don’t tell you here happened and why the share market crashed in the 1920s in America. That American dream got over heated and every Tom Dick and Harry was buying shares at highly over inflated rates when in fact those shares were worth nothing and then it all came tumbling down. It is a bit like that trashed 5$ million dollar house you bought and can’t live in or rent. It only has a high value as long as the market stays buoyant but then it crashes and you have nothing but a valueless bit dirt you bought except now you don’t have the capital to rebuild on it or take out loans using the value of your property as capital. A bit like that. Shares are even worse because all you have is a promise of returns on a piece of paper.

      Someone paid attention in geography class but not so much in spelling. Thes (these) five letter words can be tuff.
      In all seriousness, you are absolutely correct, its frustrating to hear incorrect info when watching these supposed historical documentaries. Lol, I remember one Pearl Harbor doc where the Japanese attacked on 12.17.41.
