@@AfrikanHairGod Haha not the gorilla glue slick back! 👀🤣 It is slicked back like no other huh 🤔 😆 It would have been cool to shave it but I got a lumpy egg 🥚🤣. It ain’t cute shaped like Rosie’s and Majestic’s. 💖😆
I’ve been wearing my hair straight for the first time in my 5 years natural. Not gonna lie you are right about stretched styles and single strand knot prevention. My stylist saw so many split ends - it was a hot mess - curly cuts don’t catch anything. She trimmed me even - and now I’m maintaining the blow dry till smooth and light flat iron ( one pass and ceramic iron only). 410 or less - I’m going to start trying to decrease the temp. I’ll go back curly for summer - and hopefully my ends will be spotless then. My curls return - when wet - and I continue to keep an eye on it hydration deep condition and all - no issues with my highly dense, course and medium width strands. It also finally feels good to see the length I’ve achieved (mid back ). Would have been longer if not for the no oil & butter issue! 😢
It sounds like you’re on the right track Sis! 🥰🙌🏽 If I may give a suggestion: When you’re using heat make sure you’re using a good heat protectant which I’m sure you are. Also, do a protein treatment and use a bond builder before and after. It’ll help keep your curls intact and protect your beautiful strands. This way you can enjoy bouncing back and forth with a little more peace of mind. 💖 Lastly, I’m glad your hair is thriving and you’re enjoying great length retention! What a beautiful blessing! 🙌🏽
Great tips !!! I’ve been a subscriber for you for a while! Your mane is looking fabulous! Thank you for all your inspiration and humor! Girl - we need to laugh at ourselves through the MANE Journey! Blessings always !
Hey Girl, TFS...I went back to what worked for me years ago (Loreal shampoo & conditioner), no more under the dryer deep conditioners. My hair just doesn't need it. My hair is flourishing. I'm so glad to know that I contributed to making the Black Women Owned Hair Care Businesses rich. 💜No shade at all.
Haha I was one of the biggest contributors too! 🫣🤭 I love L’Oréal. I use to use the sulfate free one when I use to get Brazilian Blow Outs. My hair loved it! I also, have always loved Pantene but this Dove line I’m using has me in a chokehold! 🤣 It leaves my hair so freaking soft and silky feeling. I’m not trying to encourage you to use it but if you ever do please come back and tell me what you think. I’d be super curious to know your thoughts on it. 💖
Thanks for the update, Shelly! Wooo it's been a journey, right?! Lessons learned and shared; can't appreciate you enough for sharing it all with us because chile, you saved so many from the angst, grief, and just confusion and proved that simple is best, ain't nothing wrong with oils + butters, and doing too much is really doing too much. Thank you. Your hair is looking fab and I hear you on the ease of stretched hair. I still rock it curly during summer months (I'm on east coast) but for this winter, I'm going to wear twists/twist-outs, braids/ braid-outs, slick-back buns, etc because I found that I just have less splits and it's overall easier and quicker to manage than a daily washngo. I was using olaplex for bond building generally but just got a trial size/sample size of K18 to try. I've been eyeing that Pattern protein treatment mask so may try that soon as well.
@@hopew6979 Yes Sis it’s been quite a journey for sure! You’re so welcome Luv! Yeah going back to a very simplified routine and using the very products we were told we shouldn’t have my hair thriving again! I honestly wish you could see and touch it versus how it was before because there’s no comparison. Also, Afrikan Hair God (Narada) did a reaction video to 2 CIK/BGC stylist the other day. Watching and listening to them handle one of the stylist hair was mind blowing 🤯 I can’t believe I ever followed any of that mess! 🤦🏽♀️🤣
Yasss…Shelly I am loving the Dove bond shampoo and conditioner as well. It feels so good on my hair! Glad to see you are enjoying it too. Thank you for continuing to share your tips and tricks💕. By the way your humor is everything. I love it😅😊.
Hey Shelley your hair is so gorgeous and healthy and thanks for the tips simple styles and routines are the best wishing the best with your hair journey enjoyed the video 😻
Hey Shelly, I love to see your hair thriving and growing! Congratulations on having come so far! I too love myself a quick, easy, slick back bun/ponytail. I've been using the Shea Moisture bond building line and it has been a game changer for me.
Still trying to use up the jar of big poppa I have, since I feel it makes my hair too crunchy, and the other day I randomly decided I needed to slick back my hair and I followed the method you used in your IG vid the other day, adding the gel first and then putting the ponytail holder on, which helped it to lay down neatly without it being tight, but I put grease on first and then the big poppa and it didn't dry as crunchy as normal. Next day it is feeling nice and soft. 😊 Love hearing about your new routine! Natural hair is definitely so much simpler than we sometimes make it😅. Keeping your hair stretched more the longer it gets is the truth! 💯 Your eyeliner looks very nice in this vid.❤
Hi Luv! Yes, I agree the Big Poppa can be sometimes be crunchy. 😅 I find adding a hair serum or light amount of oil prior to using it buffers that from happening. Even using a thicker leave-in or not fully rinsing out my conditioner has the same effect. There are so many ways to change up the level of hold it has. ☺️ Yes, wearing my hair stretched most of the time makes it way easier to manage my hair. I can literally wash it daily if I wanted because it stays super detangled and organized that way. 🎉 Aww thank you for the sweet compliment regarding my eyeliner. 🥰I’ve been working hard to protect a good wing! 😆
You are so welcome Sis! My youngest son has hair that could be considered 4C and his hair is almost to the middle of his back now when stretched. So all of our hair grows but the difference is, are we retaining the length that has grown. When the hair is properly taken care of you can retain the length you’ve grown. The way I do that for him is I wash his hair monthly really well. Then I use leave-in and hair grease and twist up his hair. If you want to see his hair it’s on my instagram page. I hope that’s helpful. 🥰
Thank you Shelly for sharing! Now, we know that that kind of damage can only be dealt with by cutting the hair. That alone is a wealth of information. I think simplicity is the best.
Great question! When I pull it back I towel dry it first with a microfiber towel. I make sure I get the center part really good with it. I do that so even though it’s bound with the hair tie it still is able to dry fast. I also do not add any hair get to the center of my hair because if I do, my hair will stay wet in that area forever! So I only put the gel in the perimeter of my hair and then on my puff. At night I will loosen up the hair tie significantly so my edges can get a break from the tension and my hair can finish drying if it hasn’t already. For the follow up days I just dampen the perimeter of my hair and add more gel and it’s done. Takes me max 5 minutes. Hope that all makes sense 😅
Exactly what I wanted to know too! In the summer I used a microfiber towel to absorb excess water from my hair before pulling it back into a slick back bun using UFD + Wetline and that was sufficient. Now that I am using a thick cream styler heavy in oils and butters with my gel for the colder mos, I will sit under the dryer for about 15 mins before pulling my hair back. Otherwise, it will never dry on the inside.
Hey Shelly, what do you think is the reason behind your hair being back to its natural rich black color? My hair went through the discoloration, but I got a big chop to get a fresh start. I don’t know for sure but I’m wondering if it was the access water & product in the hair being cooked under the dryer. Trying to make sure I don’t go down that road again.
Great question! I can only speculate but I think it’s a combination of what you said and using those recommended shampoos that were super harsh and stripping! Trust and believe I’m closely watching my hair for any signs of anything being off. ❤️🙏🏽
Ahhh, I totally forgot about the harsh shampooing cause I definitely was using balance every week for quite awhile before my big chop! Thanks for the reminder. Glad to see you flourishing💫
@@hafsahusseinali I clarify about once per month. Try that Adowoa Beauty because it doesn’t strip my hair at all. Another one that’s very similar in feel is The Doux’s Breakdown. It supposedly strips everything off the hair but your hair doesn’t feel completely stripped. 💖
Yes, I used K18 when it was damaged. It’s an amazing product but it can’t fix splits in the hair. Nothing can repair those. The only thing that addresses them is cutting them off. 😢
I, too, have gone back to what works for me. However, I cannot bring myself to go back to the non-Black corporations. Just me. One thing that I have been doing that holds moisture in my high porosity hair to a higher level is using UFD as a topper, instead of a base. I was shook when I tried it that way.
Aww yes, I can totally understand where you’re coming from on why you won’t use certain brands. I have nothing but respect for you on it. 🫶🏽 I had to stop using UFD because I’m allergic to some of the ingredients in it. Totally sucks because I use to love it.
