You should also mention the need to carry a small amount of salt. Most people are so focused on drinking water they forget to consider if there is no salt in your system, your body will not be able to utilize the water you ingest. Its happened to me more then once southern California desert area. Especially if there's very little food intake.I could drink all day and I would still feel like I wasn't getting any water and I would urinate every 10 min.
Actually, some people found a tribe that had no idea what the heck salt was, and they were living off perfectly fine. Also, salt makes you thirstier...
Joey Cha Different ethnicities adapt to their environment differently. Hence why northern Europeans are rarely lactose intolerant, and many Africans have sickle cell (helps to not get malaria). It might be in their genome, this doesn't help others though.
When you put the chlorine in the water, that is the time to disinfect the threads. You can then rinse the threads before drinking. Cloth over the mouth of the canteen when filling keeps out the debris and sediment. And if your going to carry the tube, carry a small filter. Excellent videos!
Another reason not to camp in a body of water is because in some areas, where wild life is bigger, it’s possible for predators to wander into your camp. Either way great vid 👍
Hello Jeff, great video. Kudos! Making these is not easy. I wanted to point out that at 10:10,when you found a trickle, using your knife sheath was interesting, but you might get tanning chemicals in the water. Maybe not important in survival. I was surprised that you didn't say to dig a hole in the sands at that point, possibly line with trash can liner and collect that puddle that was forming at the base of Rock and sand on the video. In my estimate, you were saved at that instant. That puddle looks to be a liter or more per hour. Keep up the "inclusive" videos!!! Great asides on culture!
Put the wet bandanna around your neck. It will help keep you cool while it dries off. I typically wet a bandanna when I get a chance in the desert, then put it around my neck.
Because our society is only concerned about skills geared towards jobs which it relies on. So today you have a lot of STEM classes and lessons. Institutional education is really a joke that is less about the individual and more about the needs of the job market.
Demonstrating digging down to cooler earth for your lean-to, would be good, you can do that in another. Anyway, as always, keep up the good work my kid is learning a bunch.
If bees are attracted to your desert bag (flax bag) forget about trying to find more water on the surface. This means that even their water supply is gone. This is not a good sign.
There might have been a little sediment in that stream but you could have drunk it without suffering any harmful effects. I guess there were no towns, cities or farms upstream. No beavers, No huge herds of bison. And the UV would have taken care of most of anything else. You soon get used to the taste. Depending on the minerals in the water it may cause diarrhoea in folk used to town supplies. But you won't die.
Man i live in las vegas and our Mojave desert is nothing like your videos. I see lots of green. Veggition. Tons of green. I live in sloan canyon not far from spring mountains only natural trees miles
Chemically, I like to carry Lugol's solution - 5% version - Iodine/ potassium Iodide- for chemical purification. One can argue which chemical is best to use, and for me, a much better taste than Chlorine. Boiling is best, as I understand, but chemical with a survival straw (lower the micron the better) will take care of a lot.
I agree with lugols solution. Good for water purification and disinfecting wounds. Its also not a pure poison like bleach and chlorine, iodine is actually used by your thyroid.
I have used iodine in some BAD places..... Guyana and Panama......they are saying now that iodine is not effective on cryptosporidia.....but I have had no bad effects.....maybe I have been lucky.....they are saying now that chlorine dioxide is better and kills more pathogens.....the drops work faster than the tabs.......
Wouldn't a person want to be about 50-100 yards away from the stream, so it would be easier to get water and maybe catch minnows and crawfish to eat? Would that stream have small minnows and crawfish in it?
why did you have canteen mouth facing upstream instead downstream? you my looked like a fool with that long straw until i thought about how you can hold it below the surface but not touching bottom of that hole, and it be daft to cut it, what about high water short distance things li9ke bees and ants for water location. nice vid
@@SonoranAstro Ah interesting, i have seen a few other people using a filter element in buckets. but out in the middle of nowhere you might not find a bucket. Making sand filters is an interesting idea too. my concern is making sure i'm not ingesting bacteria and virus..getting sick in a survival situation could mean life and death.
Just an FYI - bleach degrades over time. If you have it stashed in your survival bag be sure to write a date on it and change it out for fresh bleach occasionally. Also, bleach degrades faster when diluted, so keep that in mind. Here's a link that tells more about bleach degrading. www.scripps.edu/newsandviews/e_20060213/bleach.html
In my humble opinion, It would not be beneficial to cut the tube because that full length may be needed in another situation. Keep it long as is. However, it would be easier to suck through the tube at full length if he had kept it at ground level. Just merely lay down on the rock and prevent having to fight gravity by standing up.
Rain runoff can still have mouse turds washed into it, it's not guaranteed to be clean at all, your risking ALOT this way, unless your within 48 hrs of rescue. If you would have put a bandana over your bottle before you filled it, no sediment
THIS SHOULD SAY “in the Sonoran desert,” because here in New Mexico there isn’t SHLT! No mountains, hills, cliffs, trees, NOTHING. Flat scrub is all we have around Albuquerque New Mexico. No water. Even the river Puerco just due west of ABQ, NM, is bone dry
+Primitive Lifeways I'm from way outside of Lancaster, DelSur (in the 60s) and beyond,, and well, itz been a whiles, but We in the desert got a lot of survival tricks in Grade school that really bailed a lot of us outta trouble!! Great Stuff!
Glad you mentioned that! I have two more videos being released in the upcoming two weeks and that is one of them! Right now it is so dry we are under fire restrictions.
Are you aware chlorine displaces iodine in the system, if continued for long enough you run the risk of heart problems. A lot of young (20 year old plus or minus) men returned from Vietnam and had heart attacks and the authorities determined chlorine to be the reason. It was covered up.
much imp info bless u well done..well done thank u thank u imp info Ggod bless all u do..i expect rappppture sep 2019 on new moon..ask boss for a ticket so not get left behind in histories wost 7 yrs caos.. 60% die..take care be safe thank u for sharing..

I don't think I'd be certain about that puddle in the top of that rock being completely clear of pathogens. That rock more than likely has some bacteria on it, some possibly harmful. I'm immunocompromised, and I wouldn't dare drink from that. You may get by with it if you have a healthy immune system, but I've pulled water samples out of places just like that and seen microbes and bacteria in it under a microscope. So, I would still treat it to be on the safe side. Many thanks.
Lol fastest way to find water is in the plants. Tie a plastic bag over the most green ppants you can and wait over night you will have a cup of water that is already clean to drink
I'm sure going to hike 1& 1/2 miles every time I need water, really a total of 3 miles- how insane is this guy he must be dehydrated cause his brain isn't workin so well. Move de camp closer to de source of water fool, and its most likely cooler and on and on..

I passed out in the grocery store. I felt like I had noodles for legs. The pharmacist poked some salt tabs in my mouth. I lived!
I carry electrolyte tabs such as nuun any time I am going to be in the outdoors and sweating......

cover the mouth of your canteen with several layers of folded bandana and face the mouth downstream to minimize sediment.
Beautiful. I share your fascination for ancient cultures

i think u saved my life for a future time....thx bud.
After watching many of these survival videos, I wonder why schools dont teach you basic survival skills.
They really should at least as an elective......
Because our society is only concerned about skills geared towards jobs which it relies on. So today you have a lot of STEM classes and lessons. Institutional education is really a joke that is less about the individual and more about the needs of the job market.
They want you dependent on their little safety bubble they built
Thanks for the video... nicely done.
The intro was dream theatre on the backs of angels ironically right after noticed his tattoo another metalhead survivalist 🤘
ALL THOSE FRESH CHEM TRAILS...YUMMY!

Diarrhea in the desert can kill you......you lose moisture very very fast ......
From a fellow Arizonan. I enjoy all of your videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks ONT
Excellent video and attention to details. A stream is such a lucky and unusual find in our area!
Well done Jeff ,always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing the Knowledge.
Excellent and very informative series, Jeff.
Thanks for your knowledge. All the best.

After adding bleach drops, I would shake the container to mix it into all parts of the container for the time it sits.
I would go camping with you any time.
Love your videos.... thanks
A scarf or bandana can be an overlooked part of your dress or kit in your travels or camping. It serves many functions.
Is that in desert hot springs

What do you think of life straw filters?
Chuck Itall i got one, i like it. Idk about a live situation in the desert though. It takes a lot of water to fill it and suckstart that thing

the thing is sir if I am lost in that desert I won't find any water you drank them all

you should do a review on the back pack u use
Hi Jeff,
I enjoy your videos. Where is the stream in this video?
Can you tap any trees for water? The same method used to gather maple syrup.
might carry or make a short straw instead of sucking through 4' of tube when water access is easy. Great tips!
Ya, that was an over kill, I seen his head start to cave in from suckin so hard.
In my humble opinion, It would not be beneficial to cut the tube because that full length may be needed in another situation. Keep it long as is. Could you tap the mesquite or cottonwood trees?

11:00 Are you pointing at the Mountains?
I live in the same area as you, well within a hundred mile radius atleast lol. I'm in the Antelope valley.
Are you near the Barstow or Victorville area?
I live in Victorville. I believe he is located around Yucca Valley.
coffee filter to get the mud out would help !
8:30 are you even still in a desert?
Yes, it is a part of the Mojave Desert
oh cool

@@PrimitiveLifeways where exactly?
So you minimize sediment and then add a toxic poison to the water. Taking the time to boil would be better wouldn’t it?
I thought survival in the desert would be hard but I bet even I could do that now
Now try and find some water out there in the dry season.
Glad you mentioned that! I have two more videos being released in the upcoming two weeks and that is one of them! Right now it is so dry we are under fire restrictions.
In your how to find water in the desert part 1 at minute 7:14 these rocks that you're squatted by or megaliths they were set by men...

I'd still attempt to boil any water found due to Giardia or other pathogens
don't Know Why But every now and then you remind me of Danny McBride
are you sure that's water? kind of looks like chocolate milk?
Coffee filters and a film canister filled with Tang or Koolade.
Do they still make film canisters?
Why don't you carry a PLB?
4:44 after the preaching

i would have put a cloth, filling it up, and you did not find water, it was a stream
part 1 you just talk but fail to find water from underground hahaha
if the advert is 5 hour energy I advise to watch the advert at start
can't you just stick your aquarium tube, and syphon the water into your canteen?
These long commercials suck!
Theres water to your left the tree your sitting next to
Did you just tell us it's Ok to drink straight from a mud hole with a piece of tubing??
MOEMUGGY yes he did...not me!!
Tip:A dirty water can save ur life too
It can also kill it
You drink from the spicket do ya

I was thinking similarly. Could you not chuck in a water purification tablet, give it some time to work then come back and drink it?
This is nonsense he found no water
