The first time I watch the excellent actress Marlene Dietrich was in the movie "Witness for the Prosecution" (Billy Wilder, 1957), which starred the great and unforgettable Tyrone Power with Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester! Brilliant movie! Thanks.

Marlene was better at being Marlene than at being the characters in her films. SHE is the main character.

These videos are very infomative and interesting. I find myself becoming extremely irritated by the narrator's blatant errors in the pronunciation of many words and especially, the names of most of the actors. It seems as if the script is not previewed by the narrator. I would highly recommend these video shorts if only the pronunciation was more practiced and indeed, accurate and correct.

Her daughter Maria Riva remembered that Ribbentrop came to her apartment in Paris in the 30s.
He wanted her to come to him and she declined and said she would see him on but only on a scheduled date and time.
I think she met him because others asked her to do it to find out what he wanted.
When he came she was not impressed and he tried flattery to which in general she was immune to but especially in his case.
She showed no sign of him making an impression on her and had an indifferent attitude towards him bordering on being cold.
She gave him quick and to the point answers to his questions. For instance he asked her why she didn't come to Germany and make films and she said she had no interest.
He asked why she made films for Jews and her reply was, "Why shouldn't I? Jews make good films." Eventually she brought the "visit" to an end.
She didn't think of him or him coming to see her, as one way or the other. But it got around in the US and her meeting with him became a cause celebre.
Of course being her, again, she did not care about it one way or the other and regarded her meeting Ribbentrop incident.
In the thirties she contributed money to help Jews and dissidents escape from Germany.
She donated her entire earnings from the film Knight Without Armor ($450,000) and in 1939 renounced her German citizenship and became an American at the outbreak of the war.
In general she did not go public but she made an exception during the war she to sell war bonds and sold more than any other star.
During the war she went to Europe and the Pacific to entertain allied Troops sometimes not too far from where combat was taking place
and was asked why she did that she said, "Out of decency."

Alot of people think Marlene Dietrich chose to live in Paris, but the truth is she was living in exile. She was yearning to go back to Germany, but she wasn't welcome there post war. She was almost a hated figure especially by the common people of her generation and not even those that "used to be" stern Nazis. I'm talking about the regular person that didn't have the luxury to leave Nazi-Germany for a career in the US. My grandmother who lived in Berlin her whole life told me that when Marlene came to Berlin there were hardly any people welcoming her, people that probably adored her before the war would downright ignore her and she told me about situations where the staff of restaurants or shops that she entered refused to serve her and Dietrich had to leave. Obviously the post-war West-Berlin press in particular wouldn't publish these stories but since my grandmother worked in the lobby of a big Hotel on the Tauentzienstraße she would hear and witness alot in those days. Face to face people would play nice, especially the media and the entertainment industry but behind closed doors, people were calling her a traitor and Uncle Sam's prostitute. She noticed that people were only acting nice because they had to and that must have had a very big impact on her. That her "Heimat" was no more she must have finally understood on her first stage performance back on West-german soil in 1960. The crowd wasn't cheering, they were booing her and calling her all the things that others only dared to say behind close doors.
In 1964 she released the song "Mutter hast du mir vergeben"(mother did you forgive)(ruclips.net/video/9vwGW-hRTHY/видео.html) which put her dire emotional situation on display for everyone who wanted to listen.
Imho she died a broken hearted woman, all her fame a burden.

It is so sad that humans are resentful of others who are fortunate not to suffer what some suffer. She got out like many many did. Sounds she tried to help in her way. All any if us can do. Get over it. She didnt denounce any germans. She stayed loyal. Y punish her when so many got out families split, etc.. dont condemn her. How petty.
