I've had this lens for years, first on my A7 and now on the A7RIII. It is fantastic. In fact, I have bought other lenses since, but most of the time I am just better off bringing with me this lens alone. Having an interchangeable lens camera system pushes me to buy lenses that "may" be useful but I could very well do without. That said, I suggest trying to shoot this baby between f4 and f11 more often. I think that this focal length really shines with more depth of field. For example, David Alan Harvey said that he is thrilled by the possibility of shooting at high ISO on modern digital cameras not because of night shooting, but because it allows him to stop down the lens and get more of the scene in focus. This goes against all the crap that one reads online about the "importance" of bokeh and it is SO liberating. Most of the great street/reportage pictures in the history of photography have a fairly large depth of field, which allows for a more complex and multilayered composition. The downside is that one has to think a little harder about framing the picture. Oh well. Bottom line, this little lens can deliver big time, and I believe that most people who don't like the "look" of the pictures produced with it are bokeh addicts. Add a manual aperture ring on the lens, and this would be even closer to perfection.
I used to have this lens, but sold it. However, last year I got a mint condition A5100 and two days ago I got an as new 35mm f2.8 at less than half the price. This must be the most compact 24MP camera lens combination one can get. It delivers excellent image quality and the 52,5mm focal length is ideal for me.
Mounted on a Sony a7c, it's almost the same size as a Leica M9. The lens hood is worth getting, because with the hood, you won't need a protective uv filter.

I am still using the same lenses I've owned since the 70's. My lazy way of handling vignetting back then was to take my shots with a slight zoom in mind for later in the dark room, taking out the corners in the final print. My lazy way now is to digitally zoom about 10% or so, depending on the conditions, until the vignetting is not a problem. Absolutely no vignetting when I begin the edit. This practice works great for this lens with no loss in quality at such a minor zoom.
I own this len, 35MM 2.8 ZA ZEISS, a light len, and good quality photo got, I become a happy camera man. very very portable but keep the Zeiss brand quality, very confident to take a good photo
Welcome all those that found this review while looking for the new 35mm F1.8! I haven't had chance to try the new one yet but i'll try get a copy. My initial opinion; if you can find one of the Zeiss lenses at a good used price, you don't need the 1.8 aperture and want a small, sharp & very well made lens then go for it. However, on paper the new Sony 35mm F1.8 makes so much more sense. Custom button, AF/MF switch, much faster aperture and cheaper, plus from i've seen online so far, optically it's fantastic too. It's a no-brainer really.
This video helped me a lot, thanks! I recently purchased a used Sony A7II and was looking for a first lens. I wanted something small but of high quality, easy for run and gun stuff and street photography. For those looking to buy this lens, I'd really recommend keeping your eyes open for a used one. I got mine today for 350£ (4500SEK), although I live in Sweden so the pricing might differ from the UK. Cheers!
@@MrAlexTech I actually haven't tried it out, I just ordered the lens today but it hasn't arrived yet! Will probably be here mid week. My father gave me his old Canon 350D a while back and I've enjoyed that a lot. But that camera is from 2005 so I assume it's going to be a lot different shooting with the A7II :P
Excellent review. I have this little treasure and I shall not be swapping it for any rival. Incidentally, the price of this lens in the UK at January 3, 2019 is £569 (with cashback). I also own the Samyang 24/2.8 lens - I like it but if the Samyang 35/2.8 is built like the 24, I would recommend the Sony Zeiss 35/2.8 any day.
Yeah totally agree. The little Samyangs are a nice budget option but, there's a night and day difference in build quality from the Sony. I actually got my hands on the Samyang 35mm the other day (not for me unfortunately, it was a gift). It's build basically identically to the 24mm I.e plastic fantastic but very light indeed.
I'm about to place an order for an A7III and I'm considering this for my first lens. I sold my a6500 along with my 35mm 1.8 and, quite sadly, my Sigma 16mm 1.4. I was actually gutted over selling those lenses, particularly the Sigma but I wasn't really sure if running the A7III in crop mode was something I wanted to do and I wanted to free up some money for the new camera body and one or two FE lenses. Unfortunately, the Sony full frame lens selection appears to mostly fall within a fairly high price point compared to the APS-C selection so now I'm somewhat considering re-purchasing that 16mm and possibly even the 35mm and just running in crop mode until I can either afford to buy one of the existing fast FE lenses or until Sony/Sigma release some newer, slightly less expensive models. I'm thinking that I'd much rather run a very fast lens in crop mode rather than buy something like a full frame f4 or f3.5-5.6 zoom lens. I know the FE zooms are a bit more practical but I think I'd rather take the hit on resolution and still have the option to use a nice wide aperture.
Hiya Kyle, thank you for stopping by and leaving the comment :) Yeah generally a lot of the FE lenses are on the pricier side of things especially compared to the Canon/Nikon equivalents. It's slowly getting better with the third party manufacturers starting to catch up and offering cheaper alternatives. Have you had a look at the FE 50mm F1.8, Tamron 28-70mm F2.8 or Samyang/Rokinon 35mm and 24mm F2.8 lenses? They're all pretty well reviewed, FE mounted lenses that are actually quite reasonably priced. I've actually just picked up the Samyang 35mm F1.4 (not cheap at £500 but cheaper than the Sony 35mm F1.4 at £1200) and the Samyang 24mm F2.8 (bargain at £250). I've not had them long but so far i'm quite impressed. The 24mm does feel a little cheap and plastic but the image quality is good and it actually focuses really well etc. I'll be making a video on them both once I've had more time to play with them. The 24mm will also be identical in terms of FOV to that of the 16mm in crop mode but obviously using all the megapixels and the amount of bokeh will be quite closer too (full frame vs APSC etc) so might be worth a look. While you could use the APSC lenses without any issues, you'd probably get annoyed after a while and get the itch to upgrade to FE in the future. If I were you personally, i'd probably look at grabbing the Samyang 24mm f2.8 and Sony 50mm F1.8. Both are quite well priced and will give you basically the same field of view as you had with your old camera. Obviously the wider lens wouldn't be quite as fast but it should be enough to get you going.
Thanks man, I really appreciate the recommendations. I do agree that only buying FE lenses is the right choice here since I've sold my only APS-C camera and have invested quite a lot of money into the A7III (just ordered today!) so it seems to me that my main decision to make is whether to pick up 2 or 3 budget lenses or empty my current budget on one higher quality lens. I'm very seriously considering the Batis 25mm f2. That lens will basically have the same FOV as my beloved Sigma 16mm and while f2 isn't quite as fast as the Sigma, it should be fast enough for just about anything I need it to do, at least until I can pick up some more glass. Also, if I can find a good deal on a used Batis 25mm, I may be able to stretch just enough to also pick up the Sony 85mm 1.8 which I have wanted for a while. I think it's a cool lens because of it's size and weight, but the price makes it not a cool lens. I own the Sigma 35 Art that I now adapt with the mcllwhen I really want the image quality without caring about weight.. and when I want something light I put on the 28 f2. which is allot less money and it's f2 not f2.8, and it's small and light and plenty good enough for most situations that I use it for. I really think though that Sony needs to put out a 35 f1.8 that is equal in quality and value to their 55 f1.8 and 85 f1.8. the 85 is less than $600 dollars and it's an amazingly good lens. if Sony could put out a 35 f1.8 for a similar price but also with great image quality, that would be a lens that allot of people would want.
Yeaaah I totally agree. When I shot Canon I used the Tamron 35mm F1.8 and it was a brilliant size/weight etc. I'd love Sony to do the same, i'd certainly pick one up. I've not used the 28mm F2 but it's always interested me, especially with the ability to use those lens extensions. how do you find it? I have just grabbed a Samyang 24mm F2.8 though. It's even smaller than the Sony 35mm but it does feel really cheap and plasticy. Optically seems good but build quality is way off but I suppose this is reflected in the price. Thanks for watching and comment as well Jonathan, much appreciated :)

Hi, I have an a7ii (switching form an APS-C Pentax system with a 15-30 2.8 and a 21mm that someone have stoled me), and i need a portable (and not so heavy) lens for shooting in trekking e climbing session (not only landscape, also people), i would use it also for take reportage stills in a not light controlled location.. I'm undecided between two lenses: sony zeiss 35mm 2.8 (good review on the web, good construction, zeiss colour, ultra portable) and the sony 28mm 2 (28mm could be more comfortable focal, but cheaper construction, big distorsion, and less sharpen in the field)... I will probably buy a standard zoom in future (zeiss 24-70 f4, or tamron 28-70 2.8), but for now i need something light and very portable.. what do you suggest me? Thankyou in advange sorry for my bad english
The 28mm f2 is actually pretty sharp too, and a lot of photojournalists are using it in the field (tbh I saw it on Hannah Reyes Morales' IG story, I paused and saw that it was a 28mm). I cannot decide during that time if I should get the 35mm or the 28mm. I went to a store and played with both for about an hour and ended up with the 28mm instead even though it was a bit longer. Interesting because all the reviews are against the 28mm. Sometimes you just gotta try it for yourself.

i like this sony FE prime lens....but now i thing samyang 24/35 f2.8 is my first choice....becoz....more cheap more light more new and no more big difference.....haha.
Unfortunately I haven't got the 28mm to test. I'll see if I can get hold of some RAW files to test. I have also just picked up the Samyang 24mm AF so I'll be able to do a comparison with that 👍
Yeaa I agree. However, I think most would be happy to have a slightly bigger/heavier version if it were a little faster such as f2. I think a 35mm F2 at a similar size to the 35mm OSS F1.8 would be doable and it'd be a great addition to the lineup 🙂

Thankyou in advange
sorry for my bad english
The 28mm f2 is actually pretty sharp too, and a lot of photojournalists are using it in the field (tbh I saw it on Hannah Reyes Morales' IG story, I paused and saw that it was a 28mm). I cannot decide during that time if I should get the 35mm or the 28mm. I went to a store and played with both for about an hour and ended up with the 28mm instead even though it was a bit longer. Interesting because all the reviews are against the 28mm. Sometimes you just gotta try it for yourself.
What kinda photography would this be ideal for?
Weddings, street photography, on full frame camera, architecture too
Would a 37mm QuartzLine Filter fit on this?
Good review!
Great review. Thanks for the info! :)
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Sandi. And thank you for stopping by 😊😊
No problem. New subscriber here.
This or the loxia?
Im also contemplating this... Aperture is better on the loxia but it's double the price
Hey what tripod is it at 4’00? Thanks
Hello there 🙂 It's one of these:
Koolehaoda Three Feet Support Stand for 3/8 Monopod Compatibility Benro -Manfrotto-gitzo Monopods (A2-Tripod holder) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OOC3LK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_h46JBbYKKCDM5
They do a selection of really useful small desktop tripods 👍
Will this work on the a6400
Yes it will 🙂👍
i like this sony FE prime lens....but now i thing samyang 24/35 f2.8 is my first choice....becoz....more cheap more light more new and no more big difference.....haha.
Any thoughts on image quality vs the 28mm?
Unfortunately I haven't got the 28mm to test. I'll see if I can get hold of some RAW files to test.
I have also just picked up the Samyang 24mm AF so I'll be able to do a comparison with that 👍
I have both. 28mm is a bit sharper
If it was any faster, it wouldn't be that light/small.
Yeaa I agree. However, I think most would be happy to have a slightly bigger/heavier version if it were a little faster such as f2. I think a 35mm F2 at a similar size to the 35mm OSS F1.8 would be doable and it'd be a great addition to the lineup 🙂
Available at £605 now.
It's an even harder sell now in my opinion as you can get the Sony 35mm 1.8 for around £550.
@@MrAlexTech Yes but the 2.8 is half the size, half the weight and had the Zeiss colour. All this will sway it for me.
hahaha to be honest, I’m sold to that ‘long term review’ gimmick.
Are the Zeiss lens German or Chinese?
German design but made in Japan I believe 🙂👍
This lens is way overpriced for its quality. It should be no more than 400 dollars. It is ridiculous.
