Mr Ebert is obviously ignorant of the first law of movieology: Any movie starring a young Elisabeth Shue in a pink sweater is, by definition, a GREAT MOVIE.
+reinplat I loved this movie, but I have to agree this didn't show the real Chicago. The Blues Brothers shows the real Chicago. Don't forget both these guys are from actually the City of Chicago.
One of my all time favorite movies that I still love even now as much as I did when I was a kid. You're off the mark here Ebert, this movie was and still is awesome.
This is a great film. A lot better than I thought it would be. An under rated classic. My favourite scene is Elizabeth Shue is dancing around the room.
Truly stunning how in-depth, serious and erudite an analysis they give to what is basically a teen fluff entertainment movie. This level of seriousness and commitment is what is missing from modern movie criticism. So many critics would laugh off the movie as a trifle and not give it a serious review. These guys take it as seriously and give it as focused and weighty an analysis as they would Lawrence of Arabia or Schindler's List.
I always enjoyed this show along with their reviews, even if they vigorously disagreed with each other. Often I would go to the video store to search out the very movies they'd praised &/or panned and thus discovered several hidden treasures I would otherwise never have bothered to watch.
I remember I loved it, it was a hit on VHS, indeed, you had no idea what they were going to run into next when their goal was simply to pick up her friend at the bus station.
Ahh Roger this was a great movie... "suspension of disbelief" the only Disney (touchstone) movie to utter the words "Don't FU#$ with the babysitter" it was the 80's folks... what a time for entertainment...
@@borednow5838 the whole Thor argument in the beginning is edited and the "don't fuck with the babysitter," which is the best line in the movie, is edited as well.
@@Abonanno24601 Absolutely unconscionable that a studio would edit a movie which they originally fought with the MPAA to leave intact and unedited with its PG-13 rating. Disney is a joke.
This is why I would never have Disney+. That’s like one of the best movie lines ever, and if it were a Superhero movie, they’d force swearing into them! Avatar, though not Disney, is an example of that.
Adventures in Babysitting turns 35! Glad I watched it a while ago even though it only made $29 million when it first opened It actually lead to Elizabeth Shue's Oscar nominated role in Leaving Las Vegas given it was ahead of the times being that there weren't many roles for women plus the underlying theme of superheroes specially Thor Totally forgot Vincent D' Nofrio was in this Director Chris Columbus has that fun child vibe he would carry over into Home Alone, Harry Potter 1 and 2, and bring back his shenanigans-in-one-night antics in I Love You, Beth Cooper Feels episodic, which maybe people are used to today in our culture Its innocence resonates today, possibly, just watching these young kids trying to navigate a really complicated world and how they learn and grow from there Their night out together, is a story that obviously is timeless But maybe in today’s world, its innocence kind of shines through It's the escapist fantasy of kids being out late when they should be home in bed Lots of themes of children getting the better of adults I'm very happy the remake didn't screw it up, mainly cause of the two leads Sofia Carson and Sabrina Carpenter
And one of the biggest things about Siskel, is that he didnt thumbs up a movie unless he likes ALL of it. Ebert could lead you to good stuff. But if Siskel liked it, 99% of the time you would too.
0:28 I've Seen Disney's Adventures In Babysitting The Movie On Disney Plus Channel And It Was Super Awesome Live Action Disney Movie Ever Made. Thanks Mate. X
Ebert was behind the times on some things and ahead on others. Here, he’s ahead because he’s already thinking about the racial dynamic and how it’s portrayed in a 1987 movie. I appreciate that. So often in movies even in the 90s you have semi realistic white characters interacting with racial caricatures and stereotypes. This certainly walks that line. But it does it in a way that it doesn’t quite reach the level of offensive, unlike a lot of 80s and 90s movies and movies before that.
When I watch these old reviews, it feels like they often forget who the audience of the film is. I see that a lot with horror films but I also see it here. This is a movie made for a relatively younger audience and should be addressed as such.
Man. I haven't seen videos of these guys argue about movies and whatnot in quite some time. It's pretty entertaining. Also, Ferris Bueller is great and so is Adventures In Babysitting. Slight edge to Adventures In Babysitting.
This was as good as Ferris Bueller in my opinion. Bueller comes across as the boy genius as he deftly moves about his day with precision, eluding the principal in his quest to get him back in school with Bueller taking a tour of Chicago with a subplot involving Cameron and Mia Sara. Elisabeth Shue's night starts off innocently and then finishes off with run ins with robbers, and stumbling into a Black Blues concert which they pull off to perfection in order to stay a step ahead of the bad guys.
I like how these are the only two guys who don't love or even like Ferris Buller's Day Off. Good for them, that movie is way over rated. It's neat that Gene liked this movie. He's a tough nut to crack.
Grew up watching this. Kinda interesting to see the racism being addressed in the original review. It definitely has some problems when viewed today. Also, Kevin Spacey tried to diddle Daryl.
well, this goes to show critics don't really matter. One says he liked it. The other gave it thumbs down. Like all film goers. What makes them such experts? Have they ever made a film of their own? . I could go to the theater with my buddy and maybe I'll like the film and my friend would just be foaming at the mouth how much he hates this. whatever.
What makes them more knowledgeable is that they've seen more than you probably ever will, they went out of their way to know as much as possible, while you probably just stick to whatever trash gets dumped on tv. They didn't always get it right, but they still approached everything from a well-rounded perspective, probably far larger than your casual one. And Ebert did write a movie called 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls', which was panned, but now does have a cult following.
Big call from Siskel saying it was more entertaining than Ferris Brewler. I'm not a massive fan of that film, but need to re-watch this. I remember it being solid at least.
Am I the only person who thinks Ferris Bueller's Day Off is overrated? Not saying it's a bad flick. But I feel like it gets way to many accolades for being a pretty standard and at times pretty boring movie.
You know, sometimes I think these guys don't know good taste, they both booed Indepedence Day, all the original live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, Gene Siskel booed Outbreak, sometimes these guys just can't appreciate a good movie for what it is, just fun sometimes, don't over look into it, it's a kids film or a fun action movie, like it for what it is.
i really do dislike that crying friend. going downtown, even as a teenager, was not a scary thing. though i guess without her the movie wouldn't happen. i guess.
i like how this movie portrays our African-American friends as heroin addicts, car thieves, bluesmen, and angry bar patrons who it's strongly suggested fuck up a young woman and three children if they don't sing onstage. it's aged _spectacularly_ gracefully in these post-George Floyd / Black Lives Matter days, is what i'm saying.

You're reading the wrong critics. But thanks for playing, grandpa. "Well back in my day, movie critics were blah, blah, blah..."
Redlettermedia is a worthy successor to Siskel and Ebert. Mike, Jay, and Rich aren't "serious" critics but they know the craft of filmmaking.

Saw this at the movies with my Mom and Sister loved it
I'm surprised that Siskel gave this movie a thumbs up and that Ebert gave it a thumbs down.
Siskel was always the harder critic. Ebert was usually easier on movies. I am surprised here.
@@thethirdlife8695 Same here.
This was a fantastic movie and now it’s a cult classic.
I love it how they put clips from movies on Siskel and Ebert back in the 80's except just pictures.
Dude, that was Albert Collins..... He ranks up there with BB King, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker and Siskel & Ebert don't even know his name.

Totally forgot Vincent D' Nofrio was in this
Director Chris Columbus has that fun child vibe he would carry over into Home Alone, Harry Potter 1 and 2, and bring back his shenanigans-in-one-night antics in I Love You, Beth Cooper
Feels episodic, which maybe people are used to today in our culture
Its innocence resonates today, possibly, just watching these young kids trying to navigate a really complicated world and how they learn and grow from there
Their night out together, is a story that obviously is timeless
