When i was a kid i was told that one of our cats had run away to London. I asked why (as kids do lol), and was told that he wanted to join the cast of Cats (the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical lmfao). I was young enough to believe it, was excited for the cat and so told all my friends at school. My parents have lots to answer for lmao

I adopted raccoons as my spirit animal years ago, and in the process of explaining this to my bf, he said the only type of raccoon i could be is a demented one lmao (he got a cushion chucked at him after that, just fyi lol). Death is natural, and dealing with the loss of a much loved pet as a child gives you the tools to deal with the losses everyone will experience as we get older.

We had a full-on pet cemetery at the bottom of our garden - Two dogs, three cats, a guinea pig, a rabbit and a couple of hamsters. They each had a little cross over their graves - until we moved, then we removed the crosses. The new owners must have been horrified if they had dug that earth and discovered all of the animal bones, plus their favourite toys.

I heartily commend you for telling your children the truth. It's really hurtful not to, about these things. The parents are supposed to be thr ones to trust, to guide them through life, snd lying doesn't do that. The attitude that it's "cute" to make children believe in Santa is horrible

I think the best way to save heart break for a loved pet dying would teach your kids about reincarnation so every time your pet dies you can replace it with anything and say your pet has reincarnated and is now starting its new life as a dog or a bunny or a fish would make it less painful

When I was a kid I was convinced that Santa had a wooden leg. Couldn't figure out why my older brothers kept laughing at me until I got a bit older and put 2 and 2 together and realied that it was my dad who had a prosthetic foot trying his best to sneak downstairs to put the presents under the tree. 😂
On the pet front. I had 2 cats and an incredibly intelligent but weird looking dog. If I walked to the local shops, about 1/4 mile away my dog and both cats would go with me. No leads, they just walked beside me. If another cat or dog came too close my dog would chase it away and then come straight back.
I would leave them outside the shop while I went in and they would be sitting there patiently waiting and walk back with me.
People started calling me the pied piper.
    ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Our first dog I found dead in the garden bed after coming back from a long day out, I was about 6-8 I think, so I found out pretty early what happens. I think it's important not to make up stories about life events, especially in today's world, kids have access to so much more information, I think it's better the parents tell the truth, otherwise they grow up with, IMO, not the best mindset regarding such things.

Nick the easiest way to say someone is taking the piss is just saying they are "having a laugh" or in Cockney Rhyming slang it would be "having a bubble", as
"laugh" rhymes with "bubble bath" but you never include the last word hence bubble. Cockney Rhyming is a bit of a mine field though and takes awhile to get your head round it.

Not so much of a lie about a death of a pet but more of a strange place to bury it. My dad dug a shallow grave of our grassed front yard for our first pet against the wall of the house, near a ventilation grate for the gas boiler. A few days later, horrid smell emits from the boiler in the kitchen (most gas boilers in Uk stored in the kitchen in the 80’s). Gas man comes and lights a match near the lit and still functioning gas light, he declared something smelt dead. We look out side and lo and behold, the carcass has risen. We promptly relocate the cat to the back yard, far away from the house

We believe in being honest in our family.
Last summer we had to say goodbye to the family dog. He'd been ill for a while and it got to the point where he was really suffering and his quality of life had deteriorated so much that it really wasn't fair to try to keep him here.
My great niece, who was 7, was told about this (she loved that pup and he loved her). Her parents were honest with her and explained it all. She wanted to be there to say goodbye with the rest of us.
The poor pup was already unconscious because of his illness so it was really just a matter of delivering the final sleep. We all had a good cry. Then we all went for a picnic where she used to love taking him for walks and talked about him for hours.
I might have stopped short at letting her be there, but it seems to have worked out okay. I think it's far more damaging to invent fantasies about these things. People are less prepared for grief the longer they are protected from it. Just my opinion of course.
