The Karakoram Highway stretches from the ancient Silk Road oasis of Kashgar in China's Xinjiang region all the way to Abbottabad in Pakistan. The entire road is about 1300 kilometers and passes by some of the most beautiful scenery that this planet has to offer.
On the Chinese side of the Karakoram Highway, there are a number of great sights to see.
A couple hours outside of Kashgar, the first stop you'll run into is the White Sands Lake (白沙湖), an amazing contrast of what looks like desert meeting a gorgeous lake.
Further south, the amazing Karakul Lake (卡拉库里湖) sits at the base of the Muztaghata mountain, part of the Pamir mountain range. It was here that we stayed in a Kyrgyz yurt along the shore.
Rising in elevation, we cross the Subash pass (苏巴什) and ride through the Taheman Grasslands (塔合曼) before finally arriving at Tashkorgan (塔什库尔干). It's a journey that used to take 10-12 hours by bus but now takes only 5-6 hours thanks to new and improved highways.
If you're considering traveling along the Karakoram Highway, I hope that this video will push you to giving it a try. You won't regret it!
I've been to China border, when I went for a Pakistan national tour lol.
It was hard to breath at that high altitude but loved the highway!
That high altitude is difficult. I agree!
This is a place I've never heard of before but you're right when you say the scenery is so beautiful. Almost surreal, at times, and it wasn't crowded, which is a huge bonus!
Exactly. I think that's a huge benefit to traveling to this part of China...you avoid the crowds that make this country such a difficult place to enjoy :)
This is incredible. You need more subs
Thank you, Collin. Been watching some of your stuff as well now that I've seen you in the WeChat groups. Definitely stay in touch and let me know if you're ever in the Xinjiang region.

Thank you for the high video quality. Central asia has long been one of the least explored places by conventional tourists. Expecting more from you.
This is one place in the world where I won't be allowed to travel mainly because I am an Indian. So this indeed was one of the best travel experiences I've seen through a video! Beautiful drone shots.
Hope all countries gel along so that travellers like us can visit all corners of the world without worrying! :)
Wow...I didn't know that. So even thought we're not technically in the Kashmir disputed area, an Indian person wouldn't be able to travel around Xinjiang?
Either way, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the comment.
It'll be very difficult for Indians to get Pakistani visa to visit border areas. Chinese visas might not be a problem, still some restrictions are expected! :)
Parichay Mehta let me know if you figure out a way :)

Josh, this video gave me goosebumps! I have bought your Kashgar travel guide last week and thinking of traveling to Karakoram Highway specifically since I am very much into road trip. However, I couldn't find any specific section on that in your e-book. Nonetheless, thanks so much for this video. I live in Yinchuan, although still in the northwest of China, it's still far from Kashgar but I am sure I will make it soon as it seems to be a trip of a lifetime!
Awesome! So glad to hear that you'll be heading out that way soon. I think you'll really enjoy the Karakoram Highway - it's unbelievable.
Hey Syifa is here too... Seems like I encounter you everywhere I go on social media... Would love to see your travel videos about this area too.
Stay Blessed.
plz can u see karakoram highway from pakistan
You look stunning without the head scarf. Beautiful brownish hair. Best of luck in your future endeavor.
Karakoram highway is mostly in Pakistan
Hi Josh, you made a wonderful video, which I really enjoyed. I have been to the Khunjrab top (Border between Pakistan and China) from Pakistani side . The road is newly built and paved one, which is extremely fit for cycle riding. I suggest that you also enjoy the views of this part of the border, which I hope you will really enjoy. Great work keep posting such beautiful travel videos.
+Hussain Ahmad I really hope to make that trip someday. I've heard the Pakistani side is breathtaking.

Hey guys, thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed this recent journey along the Karakoram Highway - such a beautiful corner of the world. I'd love to get your feedback: *What is your best memory from the Karakoram Highway?*

wow, Josh, that is an amazing scenery and the life time ride of bike on Karakoram highway road. Some video scenery you took using drone? very professionally done on the aerial video shots.
Thank you, Lawrence! Yes, I was gifted a drone and I've been training myself to use it as best I can. I think it really adds a lot to the overall quality of the videos.
thanks for visiting gilgit baltistan . please visit skardu also !
beautiful Pakistan
can we take our own car from Pakistan to china
Great example of how neighbours can get together to benefit both sides and promote peace!
This vlog brought back so many memories. I was in Kashigar back in ‘98. We were planning to do the kaokaram hwy on a passenger bus (all they had back then) but a mud slide prevented us from going.
Welcome back again. It is now more beautiful.

My traveling companion for the day was a professional guide for expeditions on the fantastic Mustagata mountain and made my day unforgettable with miriad stories! Keep posting these beautiful videos, Josh!
I really love this video! It's amazing that you're riding all that way while putting in a great deal of effort to make a high quality video. Great footage to go with the story. Well done 👍

I don’t know about the busiest, but it sure is pretty!
Wow, you are genuinely enjoying your ride, Josh! Your happiness really shows on your face. Keep riding!!!
Thanks! It is definitely a very fun ride ;)
The scenery is just stunning. I would love to stay in one of those yurts.
Definitely! Staying in the yurt is a cultural experience that deserves it's own video, really. Crazy fun.
Yes I would love to see a video of that.
Amazing stuff... good cinematography too...
+Tabesh Khan Thank you, Tabesh! Glad it was entertaining for you. 😄

HOW FREAKING COOL!!! We love to cycle and never thought to do it around the world, that sounds amazing. And Karakul Lake is incredible. AND finally- a yurt! Ok living the dream man.
Ha! Thanks - it was quite an adventure. I probably should have done multiple videos for this one trip but that's just a lot of work :)
I think some Chinese might have idea's to create a railroad express a la Swiss Glacier Express. Sceneries can be truly amazing!
First visit to the channel, you've got a new sub..! Absolutely gorgeous images mate. What stabiliser do you use?
Awesome...thanks! I use a DJI Osmo for many of my stabilized shots. Excellent camera.
Amazing video
Thanks
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Oh my god the view is spectacular! I wish I can go there too >_
You should come out here! It truly is spectacular.
One of my dreams is to drive to Xinjiang with my family. But the whole province is so big that the journey might take quite a long time.
Wow.. Spectacular.

Going there this summer was like a dream came true although we only made it to Kara Kule lake. Hope next time I get to see the other half of the Karakoram highway. Great video!
Thanks! You should definitely make your way all the way to Tashkorgan next time. It's not that much further and it's an amazing place to visit.
Nice video…salam from indonesia…
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
While watching this incredible documentary about Karakuram Highway, I am missing my hometown, Hunza, even more. The serenity, calmness and natural beauty of this region is full of life.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful scenery. The dune covered hills next to the lake look like they are computer generated, incredible!
Ha! I never thought of it that way. It definitely doesn't look "right" to have dunes next to a lake, though :)
this is amazing man
I love to see your old videos of Tashkurgan in 90s
Was there last year and your video brought back all the beautiful memories. It was worth the trip even though we have to bear with the "natural" toilet facilities. My best memory was wild camels and horses crossing the highway 😍
So true! I completely forgot to highlight that *wonderful* part of traveling in a very remote area...those toilets are AWEFUL :-)
i probably need your stabilizer! love how you move and the videos are still amazing!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it. I use a DJI Osmo for most of my on-the-ground stabilization. That thing is amazing.
Your videos make me miss a lot my hometown. I hope you have a nice experience there!
Thanks so much!
Amazing 👍
I am imagining a beautiful ride with my beautiful Royal Enfield in this beautiful highway ..insalallah it will become true one day for sure ❤️
Awesome!

Thanks, Jon! Maybe someday... 😂

The landscape is surreal

Thank you. Is the highway still being constructed or improved for higher speeds?
one of my dream journey...karakoram. went to lhasa-xigatse-everest base camp before, and i think everything is similar. from the view, the people, especially those rocks selling business
Absolutely beautifully filmed, I couldn't stop watching! What a way to learn about a place I never knew of.
Is it alright with you if I use this in a blog post I'm writing? I'd credit and link to this video of course!
Not a problem at all, Gabby! As long as its for your personal PacksLight website and not a corporate blog, I'd love for you to make use of it :) Are you making your way out to western China anytime soon?
Yep it'll be my personal blog! And I don't have plans to, but including this video I've been seeing more and more of China and Pakistan coming up on my feed lately, and I think it's a sign to start planning!
beautiful
Thanks so much!
Super
Highway very beautifull
*Breathtaking views*
I agree!
this road is so calm and chill? or this was film im particular situation of emptyness?
Fantastic travels, Josh. Who would you suggest to contact for bike rental and to stay in a Yurk?
Nice and clean
Amazing background
Thanks, Zaheer!
Well made spectacular documentary. Wish you had also given the name of the magnificent peaks that you passed. Nevertheless it was jaw dropping most of the way.
Great job 👍
Hi Josh, So much to show in such a short video. So much natural beauty undisturbed by development and lots of people. Thank you for sharing. How many days did the trip take? Other than the one video I think you could do one for each day of the trip. Where did you stay in addition to the yurts. It looked like it was quite safe because not many vehicles were seen n the video.
Thank you for the comment! The trip was 8 days and we stayed in hotels in Kashgar & Tashkorgan. Overall, it was quite a safe journey :)
Love this video! Such an amazing view on the road and amazing experience. How long was the cycling trip from Kashgar to the border? Do you think this can be done by beginners? Like those who aren't really cyclist?
The entire trip was 8 days but it could theoretically be done in 3. If you're going downhill, it could easily be done by a beginner ;)
Wow
Its amazing
I agree. Thanks for the comment!
thanks for this video... I admired the footage taken by drone-cam. You can make much better thousands of videos about central and south Asia, all "stan" countries, since it's marvels are endless.
Excellent video
Love from Pakistan

I love the rainbow and the views of Muztagh Ata. I was supposed to visit Xinjiang in September for a trek to K2 but was forced to cancel because of work commitments. After viewing this video, I'm sure I should have just quit my job and gone ;).
Ha! I'm glad you still have your job, but I hope you're able to come out here soon.
