Love this so much! When I was about 36 and my kids were close to grown I wanted to go back to college, but was so scared. And I felt awkward knowing that most of the other students were about my kids ages! I used every excuse to keep from potentially failing. One day I told my husband that it would take me 10 years to complete my BA and my MA, and finish my internship hours for licensing, which would make me 46, so what was the point? My husband said, "and how old are you going to be in 10 years if you DON'T peruse the dream?". That hit me so hard, so I enrolled and got to work. Today, I am a licensed therapist specializing in trauma and manage a clinical staff for an agency I love, with a small private practice on the side. I think how much I would have missed if I had let that fear hold me back. It is always worth stepping out of our comfort zone to pursue what we love.

Lady, that was the most inspiring thing I've heard recently and I'm proud of you. Coincidentally, I'm doing something semi-brave tomorrow...I'm beginning the loooong journey of getting my smile back. I used to LOVE singing & doing makeup, but I lost myself for over a decade when I started drinking & doing drugs. Praise God, I got clean 5 yrs ago, but I'd already done so much damage that my teeth were really suffering. I've been fearful of having this procedure done and I didn't have the money, anyhow, so I put it off. I've covered & manipulated my smile for years now, but I finally decided it's time to face the fear and do something good for myself. So, here goes! Geronimo, I guess! any prayers are greatly appreciated as I transition into a new me! Thank you for being such a light, Jess! May God bless your new adventure! ❤

I don't currently feel the need to do anything that scares me but I'm also just wrapping up a big thing that scared me! I'm 48 now. I didn't learn how to drive till I was 34. I have an anxiety disorder, and I had severe anxiety regarding driving in particular. But one day, I got it in my head that I was going to go back to college after having dropped out at 18, and I couldn't do that without a driver's license. So I did the dang thing! I got my learner's permit, and 11 days later, I was a licensed driver! Then I enrolled in community college, and faced every math fear that I ever had. I had to start over with pre-algebra and work my way up to college algebra. After several years of part-time community college, I graduated with three degrees and transferred to a four-year university. Last December, I got my bachelor's in history, summa cum laude! I walk in two days! It was terrifying, but I did it, and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself!

Jessica. I took a 10 year break from leading worship, singing at every funeral and wedding. My niece asked me to sing for her wedding and I originally said no because not sure if I could sing as well as before. She begged. I did and my son who was running sound said he’d forgotten moms voice and loved it and my dad cried and told me it’s a son to hide the talent. So I’m slowly but surely getting back into it. You can do it …..I almost pooped pants night before wedding but it actually gave other people joy ❤

Oh Jessie!! YAYYY!!! I am SOOOO excited for you!! I am a 63 year old woman, mother of 9-7 sons, 2 daughters-and grandmother to 7 grandchildren.
As much as I love being a wife, mother and grandmother, but, like you, there’s some things that I want to do for me.
Last December of 2022, I had spinal fusion surgery. Because of my autoimmune issues, my healing has been super slow but I’m determined to start becoming more active to regain my endurance and stamina and I must lose at least 45 pounds.
Because of my back issues before my surgery, it’s been awhile since I’ve been smaller.
Well…I am making my first differences in what I eat and portion sizes of what I eat.
I don’t usually eat a lot of fried foods or junk so I know that has been a good thing.
I just want so much to reclaim me.
I’m getting myself out of the house and walking more.
Please say a prayer for me that I might be successful as I move forward to achieve this goal.
I feel very anxious but also excited to try to see how much I can do to help myself.
Having lupus, fibromyalgia, IBS, non working thyroid and asthma a lot works against me, but I’m willing to give it my all to be healthier me.
Thank you in advance for the support!! 😉👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉💪💪💪💪👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏🙏

Coincidentally, I went down a rabbit hole of Tyler's vlogs this weekend and heard you sing for the first time in your proposal video. Your voice was, and I'm sure still is, absolutely beautiful. A Disney princess come to life in every way. I'm so excited that you've found a renewed joy in/love for/comfort with your gift, modified as it may be, and I wish you the absolute best on this journey. Your voice is, at the end of the day, for you. It's a privilege to be able to share in hearing it, but it is for your and your family's joy and they will find joy in it no matter what, because it's you. My mom is not a good singer by any stretch, but I loved hearing her sing as a kid because it was her. I can only imagine if she had the voice you do! Reconciling a change is never easy, but singing is ultimately an expression of joy and I hope you can recapture that full joy once again through these lessons or by any other means. 💗

This is incredible. I remember hearing your voice in a clip before and being blown away! This message is weirdly accurate for my current dilemma and I started tearing up with you! 😅 I’ve been an LPN (licensed practical nurse) for 17 years. Lately I’ve felt such a pull to go back to school for my RN (and possibly beyond) It’s truly not about the money or I’d have gone back ages ago. My driving force is working under people I just don’t agree with-or I know I’m more capable than, but because I don’t have a higher degree, I succumb to their “rule.” I’m just so sick of being an employee to supervisors who don’t care and I know I can make a difference. My lack of education is the only thing holding me back. At work people come to me like I am in charge because they know they can depend on me. Idk. This sounds like I’m bragging but I swear I’m not. Here’s to hoping I make the leap! Sending my love! You’ll do amazing and I hope you’ll share your beautiful voice with us more in the future. 💕

When you are a creative person, having a creative outlet is so important to maintaining your sense of self. I was always in choir, show choir, dance, etc. as a young person. Thought I wanted to be a dancer, but didn't pursue that. Never did theatre. Then came marriage and kids and homeschooling and there was just no time. But the small town we moved to in 2004 had a community theatre and my kids wanted to get involved. We started doing shows together and it has been the biggest blessing. We spent a lot of time together and had so much fun. I was terrified to sing by myself so was content with chorus roles, until one show when I REALLY wanted one of the leads. I was 50 and worked up the nerve to audition a solo. I was TERRIFIED. I didn't get that part, but the next show, I got a supporting lead. And each time I had to sing by myself, it got easier. I'm 58 now, and opening night of The Women was last night. I'm playing Countess De Lage. Oh and I am now the Executive Director for that theatre as well. A job I freakin' love and NEVER would have expected to have. All this to say, YES. Do something that terrifies you. Find something you love and figure out a way to make it work for your life.

When you were talking about your voice lessons and doing things we’re afraid of it was so inspiring to me. I have ridiculous (social) anxiety and it sucks! I’m so tired of it controlling me and making miss out on things. I randomly started having panic attacks when I drive (esp on the highway) and so I stopped. And it’s severely limited what I’m able to go and do and I even missed a concert that I was so excited for and I was so disappointed in myself. It feels so silly to talk about- being scared to drive on the highway but I feel like I just got so used to not driving a ton during COVID and I’m not used to it anymore. Anyway, I want to start getting comfortable driving again!!! I was thinking about it and idk you just inspired me a little more so thank you Jess 💕

I went back to classes ~6-7 years ago and have been slowly getting better over time, persevering through injuries, and am finally at the point where I'm feeling ready to pursue auditioning for a performing company (not expecting to make it, but it's still the process of pursuing my hobby and passion). It’s been 9 months of lessons and it’s crazy how much I’ve missed it, as horses and band were what I lived for in high school, and I’d stayed in touch with my horsey side post-university. I love reading and promoting the love of reading. I will still get to teach too but no more grading essays! If you are unhappy with your life, it isn’t too late to make a change.

The timing of this video is spot on for me. I’ve always wanted a tattoo, specifically this adorable little bird that represents many special things in my life. But never got it because I hate needles, and also was afraid of judgement. Growing up in a small town in the south, tattoos were not acceptable. Soooo… guess who is scheduled to get a tattoo tomorrow? This girl! I’m going to try not to cry the whole way through it just because it represents a kind of freedom for me.

I relate to what you’re saying about singing lessons. I grew up dancing, my undergrad degree is in Dance Ed, I spent years teaching dance. I eventually decided to try pole dancing in 2019. It’s so crazy how different it is, and how I now think about movement, muscle groups, and overall kinesiology different since poling! I hope your singing journey is refreshing and affirming!

Jessica, My Storyworth question this week was "What Would You Tell Your 20 Year Old Self?" First of all that was 53 years ago so I've lived enough life to write my 20 year old self a book! 😉 One of the things I wrote was "Dare to think Big! Lack of confidence coupled with fear brings out that inner voice saying, "That's crazy. You might fail!" That makes us think small of ourselves so we sabotage our potential.Trust yourself. Keep evolving." I think your courage and desire for change is so awesome! 👏🏻

Hey Jess. I've been a long time subscriber, like since 2013 when you were still filming in your room at your parent's place but I've been a silent subscriber who never really comments but watches every video. I always look forward to your videos and you have been my favorite youtuber for a long time. You're very real and relatable and I feel like we'd be good friends irl lol. Anyway, I love this trying new things streak you have going as that is something I struggle with a lot as well being a shy, quiet person. I'm an RN working in a hospital but I've definitely been slowly losing my passion for it. Nursing has become horrible and stressful ever since covid and just keeps getting worse to the point I don't enjoy going to work anymore. I have a big interest in true crime and would love to go back to school to get certified in forensic nursing and get out of the hospital setting, but I've been nervous because there's not a huge job market for that but you've been inspiring me to just go for it anyway, so thank you for that 😊 I hope you have a great weekend!

I've been watching for years, but your current content is *chef's kiss*!
You've had some chatty videos in the past few months that I have re-listened to just because I needed to rehear your message.
I'm so excited that you've decided to take vocal lessons!
My experience on this topic is also related to music. I was heavily into the music/theater community from childhood til my mid 20s. I did many things, but my #1 was playing the violin.
What happened in my mid 20s? I graduated from college and got a full time job. (I'm now 39) The biggest message I took from what you said was "I'm just doing this for myself". ❤️
I genuinely don't have time to join an orchestra or play pit for a musical but........ I could rent a violin and play just for me. Perhaps figure out adult lessons. And then if the time comes one day that I do have time to devote to performing, my confidence and skills will be ready for the challenge.

As someone who also did theatre and developed a fear in my adulthood, when you have those scared feelings just remember that for now you are doing lessons for you. If you're not ready to perform its okay because you are singing for you. Maybe one day you'll get back to performing but once you rediscover the love of the art itself it will give you such a healing feeling that you didn't realize that you needed. Also if you go to SK for a treat smoothie, banana boat tastes like banana bread liquid form. It's so good. I use to work there in high school and we would put extra ice in the blender when someone ordered it because we would have the excess lol.

We have jam sessions and karaoke nights at home all the time, and a few times a year the two of us play gigs as an acoustic duo. It is so fun and fulfilling to perform with him, and to revive my love for singing! Maybe there’s an opportunity in the future for Tyler to accompany you at an open mic or jazz club or something 😁🎶

I'm 48. I have been in the arts pretty much my entire life. Creative writing and singing were always my passions, my callings. I also dabbled in dance and acting, but those weren't really my art forms. My non-arts but related hobby has always been languages. On much of that, I am right where I need to be. I practice my creative writing for a living by using creative writing to teach basic writing skills to adults. I also have a freelance practice writing for and about other artists in my hometown. But singing has fallen by the wayside over the past few years, and I always seem to be running out of steam before I can learn anything in languages. I miss those things, and really want to get them back. Your video is inspiring me to take action.

Since I was a young girl, I've always loved photography. I even minored in it in college. But because of imposter syndrome and just overall being terrified of failing, I never started my own photography business. Last year, I finally pulled the plug and jumped right in after 5 years away from it, and I couldn't be happier! I've got 3 weddings booked so far (I feel like that's a success, given I just started my business officially in October!) And my heart is just so overjoyed to serve these people by doing something I love. Ripping the bandaid off and just going for it is SO scary, but SO worth it. ❤

@Jessica Braun I absolutely feel this. I was also a voice major and met my husband while singing in a band that he joined. We had kids and while he’s now a professional musician, gone on tours all the time, I was starting to feel like I lost my creative outlet, “just a mom” type of life. During Covid, I started making leather and wood jewelry, just to have that creative outlet and to have something that was just mine again. I’ve been doing sporadic craft fairs and selling to friends, but have been SO nervous and hesitant to pull the plug on making a website and selling my earrings to a bigger audience. I’m terrible at spending time and money on myself, but this has made me feel like I need to just DO IT! Thanks for the motivation!

So glad your getting back to doing things that you love ❤ Through my childhood and adolescent years I loved being creative, drawing, painting, needlework and many other hobbies like that. Then I suddenly stopped doing any of my hobbies, didn’t have the time or energy for it. I was too scared to do creative things for years because I thought I would have lost all my skill in it and it wasn’t worth doing art when it wouldn’t be any good. So I didn’t do any hobbies or things for myself for over a decade, but last year I felt that something was missing and like I was kinda lost. So I slowly found back to my old hobbies again and even found some new creative hobbies. It was the best thing I’ve done for myself in years, I felt like myself again and so much happier. I didn’t realize how much those hobbies meant to me before I made time to do them again. I agree so much with what you said in the video, if you can make time to do something you used to love or find a new hobby, it’s so worth it. And it can really do more for you than you think!

Saute onion , peppers and tomato (or omit the peppers..but I ❤ love serrano) in a bit of oil. I cheered and played softball all of my childhood and felt not quite myself when I married and had kids. I tried a Zumba class and quickly got hooked. I took classes for a couple years and then went way outside my comfort zone and started teaching it myself. Fast forward 12 years and now have my group fitness certification and I teach 2-5 Zumba and Aqua Zumba classes per week in the evenings. It has been my free gym membership, my “fun job”, my free therapy, my way to give back to the community and I’ve made so many friends.
I also missed singing and joined a community choir with my kids when they were young. Now my kids are both very musical. A few weeks ago at our concert my daughter 17 and I sang together and my son 14 played guitar. That moment we shared on stage together was so special. What a joy to share what I love with my kids!
My life is fuller because of these experiences, so please follow your heart and go enjoy what you love. You will be setting a great example for your children and be happier for doing it. God bless.
