  • In the last several years, digital cameras have gotten to a level that is perfectly adequate for most uses. A camera that is a few years old, and that you can get for about $200 to $400, is a “sweet spot” camera.

    My sweet spot are the NEX-6 and NEX-5n (with external evf), with Sony's stabilized lenses 50 mm and 35mm f1.8, kit zoom 18-55, and even the 55-210.

    Totally agree....a time will come when people start searching something older and unique. The majority of the new cameras all appear to be about the same. I've never had a DSLR since I've jumped in at mirrorless age. Currently shooting Panasonic g9. However I just purchased the Pentax k70. Looking for something unique I can connect with that has good egrononics. I many shoot street / city scapes / architecture.

    In 2022 doesn’t really matter because today we’re uploading to social media apps which compressed your files. I make small videos of my trips on 4K dji pocket and Instagram compresses it to 720p 🤣

    My beloved camera is the Pentax K5 iis. Sharp, easy to use, very pleasant.
    And your video about the Pentax MX-1 makes me hope i will find a good one soon as it is a desirable vintage capable piece of gear.

      I got my K5 when it was just released. Otherwise, a K5ii/s, the one without the low pass filter, would have been my ideal DSLR at the time.

    still shooting and loving my pentax k-5. only thing i miss is focus peaking and maybe a bit more megapixels. but just feels so good, full of features and the raws from the sensor are wonderful!

    If only stills were required, I'd still be enjoying my trust old set of 1D/1DsII bodies. But video is a reality. The 5DIV was the first Canon body that got there for me. Things like autofocus and 1080/60 were always features I was willing to wait for. (It also doesn't hurt that the 5DIV is more capable than any 1D model prior to the 1DXII.) If I'm only shooting stills, I love the combination of the 5DIV and the 7DII; the latter is simply an APS-C version of the former. But if it's a video job, the older 7DII goes away and is replaced with the 90D, a curiously capable body that gives you both mirrored and mirrorless capability. All three represent the best -- and last -- of their kind. I believe that they will see a resurgence in interest at a later time, when mirrorless shooters discover optical viewfinders and want the most capable versions of them.

    Camera for a serious photographer is nothing but a tool, and not an item of luxury or something to pose with. What tool a photographer needs depends on what he or she wants to achieve and the type of photography they do. A Leica M10 Monochrome is of absolutely no use to someone who shoots fast action wildlife or sports, but put that Leica in the hands of a landscape or cityscape photographer and see the results for yourself. Not everyone needs -5EV autofocus sensitivity coupled to 250 active phase detect and 12 FPS shooting mode. It is not the Megapixel count that makes a photograph, but the aesthetics of the subject and the skill of the photographer. I think it was Ansel Adams who once said ' there is nothing worse than a sharp photo of a fuzzy concept ', and he said that in the film era. I believe that statement still holds very much true today.

    I agree would go back in time to 2008/10 and look at things like the Canon 5d Classic or Nikon D700, both still amazing cameras

      A few weeks ago I missed on a deal on a 5D classic for $129 at my local camera shop. That would have been a nice toy to play with. As it is I have too many cameras so I won't pay too much more than that for one of those, but they are totally worth it!

    I never spend over $400 on a camera. For video I’m using a lumix g85 and for photo I use the fuji x-t1. I’ve been eyeing the xe3 but gonna wait until the price drops a bit more. Great video.

    Juan, excellent point about sweet spot ~$400 for a digital 📷. Most digital 📷 are very good & with some differences in IQ…ultimately, for most of us, is negligible-since we’re casual 📸. I have over 40 📷(both 35mm film & digital) & I enjoyed using them( mostly digital nowadays) all. I would shoot with my Olympus EP2 ( has a warm organic image rendering ) one day, then a Leica Typ 262( the Leica hype is real) the next, or, my current fave, Fuji GFX 50R with a Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 lens( has a expressionistic foreground & a impressionistic background rendering). I ❤️ 📷, the 📸 experience & the end result I get from each 📷. No, I’m not 💰, I owned too many 📷 with little 💵 & very little common sense. I purchased most used with low shutter count when possible. It’s a fun addictive hobby that’ll keep me going well after I retired from working( 5 more years 😑) Great b&w photos, Juan. Scribed. ✌🏼& 📸

      Thanks for the compliment and the comment. A Super Tak on the GFX sounds really interesting!
      I totally agree with you about buying used. I refuse to buy cameras OR cars new. Let someone else pay for the depreciation.
      Also yes, the Leica hype is real. Give me 5' to get acquainted again and my hands can focus a Summicron 35 by the time the camera makes it to my eye. I've had really bad luck with digital Leicas though--three M8s and one M9 died on me. I might go back to a Leica M some time, but right now I'm into Fujis. Still have the M6, which sees a roll every year or two :)

    I have a K-3 and it's definitely my sweet spot. I had a Fuji X-E3 before that and although it was a fine camera I just couldn't get it to feel comfortable in my hand. For me comfort was a much bigger deal than I realised and although my K-3 is 8 years old, I plan on using it until it dies because it feels that good to use

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 года назад

      The K-3 is fantastic. I used mine for less than two years but that wasn't its fault--I just moved to mirrorless around that time, and had a nephew who needed a DSLR so I gave it to him. I still miss it some times!

  • @scrptwic
    @scrptwic 2 года назад +1

    I have the K3-11 I always find I shoot more pictures than i realize the camera just seems to want to take pictures and feels good in my hands as i shoot mostly hand held. When I edit the pictures it's mostly cropping as the pictures look fine out of the camera. I thought about getting the K3-3 but until Pentax gets a 600 mm zoom I see no reason. I still use my 6 megapixel Pentax cameras and get acceptable daylight pictures with old screwdrive zoom lenses as I leave them in my car and photograph anything of interest as I drive around as the cameras have little value

      The K3 is my favorite of the Pentax DSLRs I've used, so I can see that!

  • @MichaelRusso
    @MichaelRusso 2 года назад

    Love my Pentax K5IIs and my KP. KP is a bit fiddly though and one needs to put time into learning it which seems a bit much as cameras should be simple, like the Fujifilm X-T2, with a simple ISO dial and a Shutter dial. Still the KP makes good images and works well with my older FA lenses.

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 года назад +1

      Totally agree, the KP is a fantastic camera. I just didn't give it a chance, a few years earlier and it would have been my favorite camera ever. But I got it when I was already into mirrorless, and being older also means my eyes find it easier to focus on an EVF :/

    How do you know if a sensors raw data is without artifacts?

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 года назад

      I don't. For all I know the RAW files could be compressed. But they don't look like it. and even if they were, compressing the raw sensor data is very different than demosaicing to RGB and then compressing that with a jpeg algorithm. My whole point about this is that a jpeg file is compressing the noise, and that is really bad in a small sensor.
