    Thank you. I have a great foundation to work on with my little filly now. You have a great ability to explain and instruct....oh and he is so handsome, with the sweetest little face. You can see him thinking!

    Loved this video. Would be good to see you working with a horse that doesn't know the commands yet. x

      Glad you liked it! Thanks for the suggestion! I definitely want to get a video of it with a horse who doesn't know it. I'm hoping I can get one filmed in 2017.

    heey, I want to learn my horse that backing part, but I don't really get out of this vid how you learned him. can you maybe help me out and give me some more advice or did you just make those gestures and he backed up?
    thanku, Mika

      Hey Mika! That's great that you want to teach your horse how to back up. Since the horse I used in this video already knew how to back up, it was not the best example. So I'm glad you asked since it wasn't making sense to you.
      To teach your horse to back up, it's important to go through each of the 4 phases. Your horse will learn what happens before what happens happens and learn to respond to the lightest phase (wriggling your finger). So once I go through the phases and say my horse still isn't backing, I will continue to wiggle the rope until my horse backs. Then I will stop and give my horse a break because it's the release that teaches the horse what the right answer is. If my horse is really not wanting to back from wiggling, then I can also use my stick to either flick him or tap on his chest. If you are consistent with 4 phases and not stopping until your horse backs (1-3 steps), then your horse will be able to back up. Don't expect your horse to back from phase 1 when you first start this. Just like anything with horses, it takes time to develop. (It took Dandy, the horse in the video, a year and half to start back from phase 1 60% of the time.) Here are some other videos that also explain backing.
      This is another way to train your horse to back up that's easier: ruclips.net/video/z5nsLzPMxI0/видео.html
      Explanation of the 4 Phases: ruclips.net/video/4vrPZN0rPJ4/видео.html
      I'm hoping to make a better video on how to do these exercises with a horse that has never done them before. I think that would help you the most. So stay tuned! I will hopefully release that video next month. Thank you for your question!

    This would be more helpful if u could do it on a untrained horse

      Aleso... /// I agree with you. Although it's a good video it would be much better to teach with a horse that doesn't already know ANYTHING. Now that's a challenge.

    I tried backing mine up and the more I tried to more she laid back her ears and raised her head, whites of eyes showing. She was clearly getting bored and fed up. Any help please?

    What if the horse goes straight to the circle when u ask for a back up

    • @mateababcock8618
      @mateababcock8618  4 года назад +1

      Hi Zoe! Great question! If your horse does that, you need to be clear about what you want. Wiggle the rope more until he backs up. Or you can pull his head back straight, if you can catch it before he turns out. Remember you want 2 eyes on you for the back up. Your horse should be listening and tuned into you, not making assumptions. Hope this helps!

    You keep referring to it as a stick, what’s the official name for one?

    • @mateababcock8618
      @mateababcock8618  4 года назад

      It's just a natural horsemanship training stick. There's lots of trainer name brands or you can pick one up at your farm store. Here's a link to one: www.bigdweb.com/product/code/241780.do?gclid=Cj0KCQjwrIf3BRD1ARIsAMuugNu2V9HHSRCP3LAjktywQt-X25bRosNbywwUrrsfum7XncsGqtdVK3YaAlDtEALw_wcB
