As someone who's training to become a teacher for those ages the reason there is so many achievements is to encourage the kids! It helps young kids learn what they should be doing and helps engagement and morale of class. Young kids tend to do well with the small achievements!

Yep, they still force joined handwriting today. They don't do it in secondary school though, just in primary school. I remember going into secondary school and having joined up handwriting done in all my work then my teachers thought it looked so bad and told me to stop with it. I had generally forgotten how to write like that so I went home and did 5 minutes of learning on it :/
They always made us use joint/running writing in year 4 and said we need to practice because you will always use it in year 7, I am now in year 9 and I have never used running writing since year 4.
