thanks so much for your reply - your terain/ area looks so suited for the Kolb and the music so compliments & suits the gentle flying. The chap who eventually adds his voice to - 'that was a really short landing' so makes me smile I wish we could see his face - he sounds such a sensible person. Mike in Exeter, UK
ha ha - now you tell me he's your dad his comment which was said in admiration is not surprising, he sounds like a great chap. I've always admired the Kolb but there are not many flying in the UK. What date was the flight? Mike in Exeter.
I have about 640 hours on the engine now and it's still running great. When I perform my annual inspection, the cylinder walls still have the nice looking crosshatch and no vertical striations. Also, I've never had to de-carbon. It's always within specs. The plugs will run over 100 hours and still look very clean and just the right color. Running the engine easy and using Pennzoil Air Cooled is the trick.
Thanks for the comments. I'm the pilot of most of the firestar videos (unless you see the older firestar 1 flying - that's my dad and he took most of the video) The airport is located near St. Louis MO. on the Illinois side of the river. Firestar 2 is from 2000 with a D/C 503. The older firestar in the video collage was built in 1989. cont......
I watch this video quite often when I'm feeling contemplative as the music is lovely and so complements to slow gentle flying - it's now April 2013 and I wonder if you're still flying around your patch? The whole production is as always nice to watch
I normally fly a few times a month during the winter but we haven't had any good days on the weekends. It's been too cold. I almost got in the air last Saturday but even though the temperatures were ok, the winds were gusting to 25. When it's windy enough for the plane to fly without me, it's to risky bring the airplane out of the hanger. As for the oil, I heard a few years ago that they were discontinuing the formula. I bought many cases so I have enough to last the life of my engine.
...I have put over 500 hours on my firestar all with the same engine. I run the engine very easy and normally fly around 4000 to 4500. I will climb at 4800 to 5000. I only go to 6800 for takeoff and that's only when I need lots of altitude due to terrain. Otherwise I'll takeoff at 6000 and throttle back to 5000 shortly after takeoff. The 503 will run a long time if treated well.
Probably 10 mph that day looking at the downwind legs. Can easily fly 20 crosswinds if needed. I had just added VG's and was flying the plane at the limit for slow flight for the video.
It's now August 2015 and a dull rainy day outside but great to watch this video again.....

That was my father in the other video saying the "short landing" comment. Sounds like he paid you to say he's "a sensible person". ;-)
