  • This episode starts in Killala in the sunshine! A rare occurrence on the trip so far - but will it last? We are heading for Donegal via the lovely harbour at Inishcrone and then the 800 year old Abbey in Sligo. We dodge a huge storm at a coffee stop outside Sligo and then attempt to reach Donegal in the dry - sadly, didn't make it before the rain returned - well it was the wettest July in history! Had a great night out in Donegal with some live music and good food. Stay tuned for episode 4 when we see the sun again and ride the amazing Gap of Mamore!

    Hi - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I was reared in Sligo town and 55 years ago I was a teenage tourist guide during the summer months, conducting twice daily tours around the town. I had keys for the Abbey and the museum, which housed a large collection of Jack Yeats' paintings. Its sounds incredible now since a 14 year old wouldn't be allowed such unsupervised activity with modern Health & Safety legislation even forgetting the priceless paintings I had access to. You stopped a mile too short outside Sligo for coffee. If you had gone that bit further you could have had your break at Drumcliffe Church where William B Yeats is buried. My parents were laid to rest beside him!

      Wow Rodney, what a story! Wish we’d have known about Drumcliffe Church - so much to learn and so little time - we’ll have to come back sometime. Thanks for sharing your story - fascinating! 😀👍

    Sorry you didn't get all the way out at Downpatrick Head, but with the weather the way it was I couldn't blame you. A couple of tips. If you have lunch at the Causeway Hotel you get into the Giant's Causeway for free. (Tell the person at the front entrance your going to the hotel for lunch, they'll have you park right in front of the hotel.) If you stay on the Causeway Coast Road all the way around (a beautiful ride!) you can stop at the Ballygalley Castle in Ballygalley (not to be confused with Ballycastle, which you'll pass through earlier) and take the free self-guided quick tour of the haunted tower room with its very sad story. On a clear day you'll also be able to see Scotland along this stretch. Thanks again for the videos, we're reliving our July trip!

      It certainly was Trevor ☔️! We don’t usually count the miles especially on country roads in Ireland - we usually plan how many hours a day we want to ride. Typically, we set off after breakfast and aim to get to our destination by 3.00 ish to have plenty of time to have a look around before beer O’Clock! 😀👍🍺

    Just got to ask as I'm in the planning stages of a group ride south to north on the waw. What was the maximum distance you covered in a day and your normal cruising speed on Irish roads? Loving the series and your idea of packing stuff in tesco freezer bags saved me a fortune last year 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @midlifemotorcyclediaries
      @midlifemotorcyclediaries  Год назад +3

      Thanks very much 🙏 glad you’re enjoying our WAW adventures! As you’ve probably gathered we don’t do big mileage days! The way we plan it is for comfort first - we tend to plan in terms of hours riding rather than miles because just like the NC500, parts of the WAW are on single track roads that take much longer than main roads. The ideal day for us is to set off between 9.00/10.00 and get to our destination by 3.00 ish so we have time to see the sights and download all the footage ( takes about an hour). So when I’m planning a route those are the factors I consider. We go much slower than most people 😂 - glad you used the Tesco bag idea - Sue’s brilliant at packing! Have a great trip! 😀👍

      We don't have fixed speed cameras, instead a company called "Go Safe" are contracted in to provide speed vans at "accident Black spots".
      Widely considered to be more about revenue collection, than road safety.....
