Hi Garden Friends, The gorgeous fall weather has me re-energized and ready to dig into more fall planting! This week, I added some special new plants to my garden, including two beautiful conifers, a long-awaited Witch Hazel ‘Diane,’ and a Penstemon I’ve been eyeing for a couple of seasons. Plus, I planted bulbs at my parents’ garden, setting up for a stunning spring display. Join me as I make the most of these cooler temps, refresh the garden, and enjoy this beautiful time of year outdoors! You really give out lots of useful information. Thanks for all the tips you share. Your yard and gardens are just beautiful!!! You and George have really made it into such a breathtaking piece of land! I love all the trees, especially the evergreens! We have a hard time growing spruces here in Georgia so I am super jealous!!! ❤❤❤
Steph this was a great video, a little of this and that. Thank you for always giving us great information about the sales and what to plant with stuff to make it pop. I love you channel and your voice, you have a wonderful teacher voice❤
We love our witch hazels. The trick is to find one with blooms that are a good size, ideally scented, but with little to zero leaf retention so the blooms are visible without any work. We chose Aurora for flower size for visibility but there are others that are more fragrant
I love your videos so much. They are so homey and welcoming. ❤ Wishing you a beautiful holiday season and can’t wait to see how everything looks next year!
Your garden looks beautiful in Autumn! Love all the wonderful colors. I learn something new all the time. Why didn't I think of just cutting the annuals instead of ripping them out. Ugh! Thank you Steph!!!
Hey Steph, if you like witch hazel, you should check out our native shrub - Fothergilla Gardenii. Very similar leaf structure & growth habit. Although they only grow 5x5’. So great for foundation planting; I actually have mine in a large container. Fragrant bottlebrush blooms in April and BEAUTIFUL fall color. It’s my favorite shrub at the moment. And under appreciated!
Hi Steph🌺 . Your parents garden looks so pretty and I can't wait to see spring flowers in it . The witch hazel and the penstemon are going to be amazing in your garden . Have a wonderful day .🌺🌻🌺
Hi Steph, some great choices of fall shrubs. The goldilocks pine can be made into lollipop like ends of the branches, if you like shaping trees. It makes them look like something out of Alice in wonderland. Ive seen a garden where the owner has chaped many of his conifers into artistic shapes and it really is a show. Witchhazel shrubs are just so beautiful in the winter. The blooms and leaves are just so stunning. They are slow growers but once established, can really take off.....(3rd year). The leaves have burgundy, orange and lime colours and the flowers yellow fluffy sepals with burgundy centres. Jo😊
thanks for sharing. love your gardens so much!!! be careful with your back i have hurt mine a couple of times moving things around in the garden. it's not fun. i am going to home depot to see what they have on sale. and i love the witch hazel it's beautiful. hope you have a great weekend!!!
Wow, this is the first time I have seen someone’s garden that is like ours with roots in every hole we dig! Sometimes it so bad we have to cut out really large roots and I worry about the trees. I am in zone 9b so there are plants we can grow and can’t grow that you are using but I am constantly inspired. Thank you 😊 !
Your Purple Penstemon will look lovely beside the hydrangea with the blue lavender in front. I noticed that you don't seem to have any Yews. I have two upright Hicks Yews, one spreading and one pyramidal. The pyramidal Yew is my favourite, doesn't get too big and gives you a Christmas-tree look. Yews are a lovely dark green, unlike most evergreens, can be pruned to shape, and tolerate shade. Very worth considering. Thanks for the great info.
I only do winter milk, jug, sowing, will you be doing a video this year again on what you’re going to grow from seed in spring? I have to buy my seeds now and starting in January.
My mom got me into your channel, and I am so glad she did! I'm a lifelong CT resident and so thankful to have an easy coast channel with similar conditions 😅 Tolland is pronounced like 'doll', not like 'Tollhouse'. Gotta love the English language 😜
Such a fun video. Your garden beds are coming along beautifully. The colors and textures so inspiring. You have a great selection of plants! You are dressed in fall colors too 😊. I think the sedum is going to do fine indoors. I did the same with pepper plants.
Is that an oriental spruce? I'm looking for a Firefly Oriental Spruce but haven't found it yet. I haven't made it to Tolland Gardens yet - that will have to be next spring/summer.
Did you consider for a pop of blue - fothergilla x blue shadow? So jealous - Colorado blue spruces not an option here in our patch of New England.. needle diseases.. etc .. the humidity, the rain
just a note, my wife grew up in CT, and the town and garden center, which I've been to and love that guy, is pronounced "Talland:. That guy is awesome!! and love you show too!!
I love the color of your Witch Hazel. We planted a yellow Witch Hazel for the winter blooms as we have Anna's hummingbirds that stay with us all year long here in the PNW. I keep feeders out all year but like to have plants for the hummers to feed on.
You're soooo lucky your seeing some sunshine! It's been foggy all week and today super cloudy and cold air! I've been busy bringing plants into our guest apartment for winter living.. Wishing I could work outside in the sun! Thanks for your video.. Always fun to watch your channel.. Leesa in France
I’m so envious, I love all your beautiful Japanese maples. I live in Central Texas so my ability to utilize them is very limited, but I’m trying to push the envelope down here! Great design.
Now I want a witch hazel. B/c of you I had to teach my self the 5 year plan. I have close to an acre and been adding garden beds every year. I have bought over 1K plants in my 4 years of living in East coast. The growing season is so short compared to Cali. That the 3 month break I had in Cali I had to time to grow my garden and not feel rushed. Here it so short I want to get it done now. But by having that 5 year plan doesnt make it so rushed and that its ok its not finished.
Love your videos. Yes I too, buy plants and move them around several times before planting. Sometimes I move them after a season because I didn't like how it worked or played with the others in that area and found a better place.
Thank you Steph! Please could you let me know how to spell the name of that sedum (Mizu / Mazoo?) I can’t seem to find it online and I’ve been looking for it for a while.
Hi Steph, I have a question concerning the daf bulbs, did you chill them before planting? I recently bought some tulip bulbs from lowes and I was wondering if they should be chilled first. Thanks. Your garden looks so pretty with the new evergreens.
Hi Terrine! Here is the video where I made that recipe. We love it, its on our regular dinner rotation. I just made it last week! Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/PqpgzHjlPrs/видео.html
Hi there, no, not in this area. It might get residual spray from the lawn irrigation. But we are just hand watering the newly planted things in this area until they are established, and then relying on rain. We do hand water if it's been dry for a while.
Hi Linda! Sedum type plants root easily. Simply pushing the stem into soil, and keeping it occasionally watered should do it! You will start to feel some resistance while pulling up the stem cuttings once the roots begin to form. Hope this helps 🌱
Hi Susan, I gave some to my sister in law, and offered the rest to my garden club members. I mentioned this in that video: ruclips.net/video/tOIe9xM5yaE/видео.htmlsi=KlP5QRE2PJ5PoZd2 Thank you!

George is wonderful and does all the hard work and you just plant the plants. Yeah George.
Love seeing a new video post show up in my notifications!

I grew a lot of penstemon by rooting cuttings. I just dipped them rooting hormone and planted them directly in the ground and they are gorgeous!
Thanks for the fall video! Your gardens are bursting with color, and the new additions will give great contrast, and year round interest.

Steph, the fall colors look gorgeous, and it’s fun seeing George’s cheery face with the broom. ❤😂❤
Loved all the new additions! Can’t wait to get my bulbs in! I’m a bit behind! Hopefully the weather will hold a bit longer. Thanks for sharing!

Great video! I was able to get a 3 gallon container of Hydrangea, Pufferfish for $7.50 - regular price was $30! Love these deep discounts!

Whooo love that lime green looking tree behind your new shrub you planted at about 1.35.
Can you tell me what it is please. Gorgeous 🎉

I’ve been so surprised how much I love my dark penstemon. I think it will look great there!
That’s a beautiful witch hazel variety. Loving all the trees. Great team work💚🌱

Hi Leesa! Thank you so much for watching from France! I hope you get some sunshine soon 💚
I do the "Plant Tango" all the time, it helps me to make good decisions in my garden and not have to move my babies!
Beautiful ❤
I love all of it Steph! I’m looking forward to what you two come up with next year.
Thanks for this video, Steph. Your witch hazel is going to be a lovely specimen accent. Especially when its big enough to trim into a vase shape💚
Thanks so much Jolie, I can't wait to see how it looks when it's larger! 🌱

Love everything you put in the ground and definitely need to invest in one of those back scratchers 😉
Thank you for taking us along, Steph! I think you have decided on the perfect spot for the boxwoods! 🍁 xo
Thank you so much for watching Christi! I think you are right - I'm very happy with their placement. 🌳
Thanks, Steph.
I certainly learn and enjoy watching your videos.
I am going to look for the Witchhazel Diane. Thank you
Love your videos. Yes I too, buy plants and move them around several times before planting. Sometimes I move them after a season because I didn't like how it worked or played with the others in that area and found a better place.
It's definitely a process of trial and error, I love moving things around! Thank you so much for watching Karen.
I got an auger for Christmas last year but my soil isn’t light and fluffy so it doesn’t work.
I wish you were here Raleigh NC has a 2 day sale on nothing but Japanese maple
How wonderful Barbara 🍁🍂
Great job!
Love the Onyx & Pearls. Beware, it does self seed & spread all over for me in zone 6.
Thank you so much for the heads up, I'll keep that in mind!
What a fun fall compilation video!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Wonderful video Steph 💞
Hi Jasmine, Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it 🥰🧡🍂

Thank you so much for watching! 🍂
Thank you Steph! Please could you let
me know how to spell the name of that sedum (Mizu / Mazoo?) I can’t seem to find it online and I’ve been looking for it for a while.

Hi Steph, I have a question concerning the daf bulbs, did you chill them before planting? I recently bought some tulip bulbs from lowes and I was wondering if they should be chilled first. Thanks. Your garden looks so pretty with the new evergreens.
Just thinking, Stef, you should share your garlic chicken recipe again. I need a refresher…
Hi Terrine! Here is the video where I made that recipe. We love it, its on our regular dinner rotation. I just made it last week! Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/PqpgzHjlPrs/видео.html
Do you have irrigation/drip lines in your beds (where you planted the Goldilocks)?
Hi there, no, not in this area. It might get residual spray from the lawn irrigation. But we are just hand watering the newly planted things in this area until they are established, and then relying on rain. We do hand water if it's been dry for a while.
Hi Steph! I enjoy your videos. I was under the impression that landscape fabric is not good. Do you have a different take on it?
Hi Reena! I explained my thoughts behind the landscape fabric here: ruclips.net/video/0It_QkepjcY/видео.html
Hey Steph, why do you use bone meal? Never used that one before. I use biotone for my bulbs. Just curious! Thanks! Andie
Hi Andie! Bone meal works similar to bulbtone. Its to help with root development 🌱
You don't have to put it in water to root it?
Hi Linda! Sedum type plants root easily. Simply pushing the stem into soil, and keeping it occasionally watered should do it! You will start to feel some resistance while pulling up the stem cuttings once the roots begin to form. Hope this helps 🌱
Did you transplant your lamb’s ear?
