This is Alternate Skyrim, a game-changing mod released earlier this year that wipes out Skyrim's NPC's to make Skyrim a post-apocalyptic scavenging game. With its optional World-Eater add-on, this mod also adds a Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom-style open mission to defeat Alduin, with the potential for taking back each ruined city from his Dragon followers and their swarms of Draugr minions first. This mod is compatible with both Skyrim Special Edition and the Anniversary Edition update.
Alternate Skyrim is one of the mods like Legacy of the Dragonborn that just makes you want to start a new playthrough specifically designed around the mod. There's so much potential here for new modlists structured designed around Alternate Skyrim to further enhance the survival and scavenging aspects of this alternate world.

For anyone planning to try out the mod, I suggest using any mods that remove the draugr's ability to shout as it can get pretty ridiculous during end game. Also, beware of deathlord city.
Where's deathlord city, sir?
@@freeedom22 At the city cloaked by storm.
@@han16al46 I appreciate the way you phrased that
The idea is interesting, but as a someone who likes dragons and undead, the premise of the mod is sorta my end goal, as such I won't be able to try it out sadly.
i've heard that a ward spell does wonders
I imagine this would be entertaining to play after a playthrough using the 'End Times' mod in which you fail to prevent Alduin's victory before the timer runs out.
its probably not gonna be playable in anything above expert
Thank you for introducing this mod. I spent many hours playing Fallout: Dust and I always wished there was a mod like that for Skyrim. I hope there’s DLC related updates in the future. Imagine Volkihar vampires attacking in daylight thanks to blood-cursed Auriel’s Bow, or Alduin’s followers and Miraak’s brainwashed thralls warring over dominance. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Looking forward to play this mod!
The idea of playing Skyrim in the Darkest Timeline is actually really cool.
I don’t know if there’s any consideration for this, but the way you made this video flow and your commentary, I would absolutely watch a series of you playing this. Maybe even with a few more mods in the mix?
Thanks! That's definitely something I'd like to do in the future, just have some other videos closer to release that I'm working on next. Also I'd like to see if the Alternate Skyrim author releases more add-ons.
I agree, I was sad when it cut at embershard mine so suddenly lol. Wonder how this would work with Skyrim Together...
This should be a series. I like watching survival mod gameplay like Dust for Fallout..
This reminds me of fallout new vegas DUST mod, where your just some random survivor dealing with the most worst case outcome of worse case outcomes for the Mojave wasteland and trying to escape it
I enjoyed this and would love it if you did a whole playthrough in this style or “I spent x amount of days in post apocalyptic skyrim” style
great idea! I do hope to play more Alternate Skyrim in the future, but my immediate plate is already full with other videos in the works!
@@FormerlyBlue ah ok, fair enough :)
@@automaticninjaassaultcat3703 Yeah I think a more full playthrough of this concept is my next project.
This mod looks fun as hell. I wish there was more talk about it.
The author is still working on add-ons for it I believe, so there will likely be more talk in the future as the project continues to grow!
@@FormerlyBlue it will be amazing if finished
If you really want to make this a hardcore modpack, add Skyrim Souls to unpause the menu's, Draugr Cavalry, Immersive creatures, beasts of Tamriel, and other animals mods for more non-human enemies, RAID for more realistic stealth, and Wildcat for combat injuries, making even fighting someone below your level a challenge. You could also add mods like Sands of Time to make enemies ambush you while sleeping if you sleep somewhere where they logically would. Hunterborn would be good too, since you have to hunt your own food anyway, and Hunterborn allows you to get a lot more from large animals.
conjuration and alteration magic seem to be really valuable with these mods...alteration to increase armor rating and an easy light source, and conjuration for weapons and allies
Oh my Akatosh 😯 Can you imagine if they did it like the Thalmor War mod?
Because this is basically dragon cult and dragon war all over again. And so many possibilities, with Dragon Priests and Nordic ruins, or maybe a Neo-Dragon Cult.
- Join the Cult
- Destroy the Cult
Great idea! Maybe we'll get more add-ons like this in the future of Alternate Skyrim takes off!
A cool idea is “What if we failed against Miraak?”
Or Harkon?
@@mikeboydus You know you’re in a screwed up situation when your only hope to defeat the one who’s meant to end the kalpa, is a bunch blood thirsty fiends that are the product of the most vile god there is.
There is one available now. Where the quest goes on after Harkons death. It gets quite dark in the mod. Think the mod was called blood pack or blood something, I can't seem to recall.
GREAT premise for a mod.. I could envision something more "dark" where a lot of trees have been burned, maybe the sky tends to be more endarkned by smokes on a regular basis etc. More roofs destroyed on houses (compared to what I saw here) ...mmh. Maybe some factions have become more desperate and deviant now that the world is more bleak...
This is actually pretty good! Years ago I've had an idea of removing all signs of civilization from Skyrim and making all npcs into tribals (hostile and non-hostile), with you having to go around the land, gathering resources, fighting animals and monsters, and simply surviving. I never got to it, and I don't think I'd actually be able to pull if off, but what you've shown off looks like a good alternative.
incorporating the lore of the foresworn as the primary faction could be interesting with that. TES has an insane amount of lore to draw from
So in essence, this was if the Thalmor are stupid enough to kill the Dragonborn and allow Alduin an Oblivion Crisis that would otherwise succeed.
The thalmor are plain stupid
See, this mod taps into the biggest plot hole in Skyrim's writing: Alduin's end game.
The story says Alduin is going to eat the world, while the characters -- including Alduin himself -- say he's just here to restore Dragon rulership to Skyrim.
So which is it? Rule the world or eat it? Can't have both, and the game never really clears it up.
And that's why Dawnguard is the best story the game has to offer.
this reminds me of that one Minecraft Meme where the Player says they'll be back and it cuts to 11 years later where the Player's House lies in a dormant ruin with their pets loyally stay to this day.
That was a gut punch
Alternately, you can refuse the first ever dragon quest by physically dropping the first claw and never play with dragons. What? Dragons you say? I haven't seen any 🤫🤫
This mods reminds me of Fallout New Vegas DUST Survival Simulator where the Mojave has fallen into anarchy 20 years after the Courier (Us), and our objective in DUST is to escape the Mojave while avoiding every dangers that's literally everywhere. Meanwhile in this mod we have to defeat Alduin while avoiding Dragons and Draugrs
The production value of this is great. You are very skilled, I have no idea what your other content is but I'm subbing for sure.
Thank you! I feel like I still have a LOT of room for improvement when it comes to production quality, but glad you liked the video and welcome to the channel!
This is the mod i´ve been waiting for! I would add Hunterborn to the mix. Also there are some mods that add hiddeouts all over Skyrim, wich might be handy.
Lastly, i might add Skyrim underground. It would give you an alternative to travel on the deadly surface, however, the underground could prove as deadly as the outside world.
Also there´s a mod that let´s you build anything, i think it was called The Wood Cutter, wich might add base building.
Finally, playing with friends with the multiplayer mod could be fun. Sadly, i have no more friends who keep playing this game so i would have to go solo.
Ooh great ideas! Ideally I'd love to see a wabbajack modlist built around Alt Skyrim eventually. There's really so much you can do with this.
Survival carry weight makes so much sense. You really should only carry a few weapons. A general adventurer should have a knife, a bow, and a sword. Also one or two types of clothing ensembles and one suit of armor.
Yeah I really like the carry weight reduction in survival mode! Makes you think more about what you actually need and decide what's not useful enough to keep hauling it around. It does make playing a heavy armor build difficult though.
@FormerlyBlue a fashionisto build, though...(no armor and a large collection of enchanted clothes for every situation) is still rather effective.
I love this mod! LE had "Alone - An Empty Skyrim" which was similar in some ways, but Alternate Skyrim seems more fleshed out. I'm so happy that a post-apocalyptic playthrough is finally feasible
We will watch your career with great interest
Thanks for watching! Hope to see you in future comments sections!
Great video! I'd love to see more gameplay with this
If Riverwood/Whiterun was in ruins then fire should be a thing around.
Fair point!
well fire goes out eventually...
great commentary and editing, I would really like to watch you do a full playthrough of the game!
Thanks for the support! Definitely a future project.
this concept could be fleshed out with a small nord resistance based out of caves and some non-essential companions, the re-playability would be insane.
I'm hoping to see a concept like that as an add-on in the future!
Something this mod setup desperately needs (no clue if it's already included): a special Draugr Deathlord with a unique shout, "CLOUD DIS-TRICT!" which launches anyone hit skyward. Bonus points if defeating him somehow teaches you the shout, but I'd settle for just having to dodge it knowing that if I'm hit I need to either pop something that lets me survive a massive fall or I'm about to die to fall damage.
"skyrim in a world like botw" is something i never knew i wanted to experience so badly. this is so cool
Here we have our guest star Alduin joining us for a chat on what could have been.
So Alduin, what would have happened if the dragonborn failed?
Three words, om nom nom
things that need to exist: a small brotherhood of steel chapter versus this
I do really really like this concept, but almost right away I formed the scenario that the game could start off in this mod's fashioned state of the world, amongst other survivors besides yourself, that would form together, basically just having found a tome that spoke of an Elder Scroll that could transport them back to some point in time (not fully described or specified, or even your transported age for that matter). The location of this Elder Scroll you, and the others, are seeking would be randomized for in-game purposes, but the tome, in hand, would state this less bluntly and more mysteriously. Each would decide it best to split up and search for more of these Elder Scroll clues concerning it's origin and possible history of previous locations, where other clues might also reside). Once embarked, you do find some cryptic clues to the location of this Elder Scroll, but they are not enough. Eventually, you are forced to try and locate survivors of the original team and other survivors you might have possibly ran across along the way. Some of these, while having perished in their pursuits, would have wrote the clues they found in their journal, sometimes hidden near by. Clues of finding these team members would have come into play also. At some point you and other survived-of-the-survivors find enough clues to locate this very well hidden and extremely arduous Elder Scroll's location, full of such hardships that most of your remaining team members would fall (maybe all, maybe not all, but you might be the only one who can use this Elder Scroll in the end). Once used, you start the game-proper in the wagon going to Helgen or maybe just a bit before.
I like to imagine that this is the last living person after my OC noped out on Dragonborn responsibility for 20 years and then got buried alive
To be fair i use the creators Club campfire thing instead of the mod but both are good
Very nice video! Like someone else in the comments said, I look forward to seeing the growth of this channel! Good job!
Thanks, hope you enjoy future videos too!
My man, I just found your channel and am loving it. I appreciate your detailed analysis of what the mods do and why they're beneficial and your commentary is top notch. Thank you for taking the time to put this all together, I'm looking forward to more content!
To make this even more unforgiving, why not put a sort of 'doom clock' into it. Like a mod called "The End Times", if you fail to stop Alduin in time, he will fulfil his destiny to literally eat the world and end the kalpa.
Definitely a must try! Wish the mod author makes the colors more bleak like the one on Darkened mod.
I'm sure there's a bleak ENB you could pair it with, but personally I prefer a more colorful environment like Breath of the Wild with this mod. I'm more interested in the "abandoned but beautiful wilderness" aesthetic than the "super grim apocalypse" aesthetic.
There's an optional file that disables sunny weather.
Basically,Fallout NV Dust/Fallout 4 Frost but its Skyrim
Some additional mods that might improve your gameplay experience:
1. Hunterborn along with Scrimshaw addons for a more refined survival gameplay
2. SkyTEST for animal behaviour. You can for instance place a junk of meat on the ground and wait for predators to feed on it in order to hunt them down.
3. Tentapalooza for Campire for more camp building options
4. Scarcity for even less loot, so you need to craft more stuff yourself
5. Summermyst for a wider range of enchantments (with Scarcity enabled you will find so few enchantet items that it's a real achievement if you find something that actually fits your playstyle)
6. Bandolier Bags and Pouches for craftable gear that increases your carrying capacity
7. Sneak Tools SE for handy rope arrows you can use to climb steep cliffs alongside other useful stuff
8. Ars Metallica for allowing you to melt down gear you don't need anymore into materials
9. Ordinator for a way better skill tree (the sneak nerf will make it harder for you to stay undetected, which might increase difficulty by a little bit)
10. SunHelm for adjustable survival options like temperature, hunger and thirst
11. Draugr Don't Shout, since in some cities you simply get stunlocked and disarmed so much that you can't do anything anymore, which isn't exactly fun.
12. Wintersun - for when you have nobody to talk to, it's nice to have at least a god listening to your prayers
13. Immersive Armours for more gear options
15. Fish Anywhere With Water for more food gathering options
16. Simply Rest (or Sleep) Anywhere, so you can sleep on the floor for as long as you haven't crafted a bedroll or tent yet
14. (optional) Skytoxin so that getting hit by venomous creatures or traps is actually life-threatening. Note that this can get a bit out of hand when used alongside Ordinator, since it also affects your own potions and poisons and Ordinator comes with an alchemy perk that allows you to use your poisons up to 10 times after applying them to a weapon until the effect finally wears off.
And for atmosphere:
1. Obsidian Weathers with the darkest option
2. Morning Fogs SSE with the Thick Fog option enabled
3. Supreme and Volumetric Fog SE along with the Obsidian Weathers patch
4. Dark Forests of Skyrim (warning: there's a lot of floating trees especially arround Markath)
5. Northern Grass
6. Nyghtfall (just a music mod, but it adds rather gothic-themed calm and depressing music, so it fits the feeling of hopelessness)
7. (optinal) The Marshlands alongside Detailed Landscapes - Poison Blooms in Morthal & Bogmort, which combined with some of the mods above will make you hate Morthal more than Nazeem. Seriously, it's gonna be a deadly hellhole that doesn't allow you to blink even once, if you want to survive.
Note that the thick fog will drastically reduce your visual range whenever it's getting foggy, but it does not do the same to your enemies, which means that foggy weather will most likely force you into hiding for the time being. I advise you to NOT USE the experience mod from the video in this case, so you can use that time for crafting and improving your character that way instead of just sleeping the fog away like a boring old partypooper.
A version of this with a few surviving remnants of civilisation would be really cool
Skyrim post-apocolypse sounds nice ngl
Ah yes, our favorite mechanic, equipment durability!
Great vid. Surprised you're not more discovered! I predict a few thousand followers on your channel by the end of the year.
Glad you enjoyed! This is like my first real video so hopefully the discovery period is just beginning! New video out in about an hour btw.
You should do a series on this :)
A full permadeath playthrough video will be out this week!
@@FormerlyBlue 😀
As soon as you said equipment degredation, I was like, "nah".
It's certainly not for everyone!
Imagine seeing this with the multiplayer mod.
This kind of reminds me of DUST for Fallout New Vegas in a way that both are aftermath of a game, but in worst case scenario.
This seems less like "what if the Dragonborn failed" and more like "what if Skyrim was a Zombie/Survival game like Day Z".
Interesting concept...
why is it always the small youtubers with the best content?
Thanks :) I'll be making a follow-up video with a more full playthrough of this in the near future.
So, just for lore accuracy's sake, the dragons wouldn't actually turn everyone into Draugr. All they care about is ruling and domination. If you submit to their rule, they won't actually do much other than the occasional tormenting for their own entertainment.
I've only watched the first few seconds of the video so far so idk if that's acknowledged. If it is, then this comment was pointless.
The Dragons didn’t really know how to rule so they had the Dragon Priests rule for them. Now most of these Dragon Priests like Hevnoraak or Rahgot would rule as tyrants and commit horrendous atrocities against their people.
2:42 UFFF Getting killed in the butt...XD
LOVE this. Some mechanics are silly though lol imagine not being able to collect wood due to not having access to an axe. :)
Lovin' these videos!!
"A resource driven survival game like breath of the wild"
Other zombie mods always kinda rubbed me the wrong way due to not really feeling like it fit in Skyrim, but framing it as dragon victory with hordes of draugr roaming the land is genius, total game changer
It would be really cool if they added a kind of Dragon that conjure or reanimate the undead and these Draugrs in this mod
Great video! Will definitely try this! Just subbed
Welcome to the channel! :)
Now we need a mod of Skyrim after the Dragonborn defeated Alduin 😅
I always like the Necromancer build, so in Alternate Skyrim you could use mods to make undead stay unalive(HA!) for days, maybe have time to build a army. Obviously not in your playthrough, this is interesting though.
Finished Skyrim on Legendary and getting all but 2 skills to 100. Was going to try the Legacy of Dragonborn mod but instead I will try this now. Will give an update
Great video!
I personally hate survival mode. Especially the fact I use heavy armor and while I don't mind the hunger and warmth meters, but I do like the foraging theme and find it cool. I used the alternate Skyrim and it feels so empty and kinda creepy due to the empty world and you have no home either, but I add a treehouse over a waterfall mod and is like the only safe area.
dude this is so awesome
Glad you enjoyed!
very good channel
So far I am loving this playthrough. I am trying this out with some other mods. But it just hit me, the mod Skills of the Wild seems to fit perfectly with this type of playthrough. I am in the middle of installing this load order now. I bet this will be very interesting.
Yeah, Skills of the Wild sounds great! There are quite a few other mods that would fit well with Alternate Skyrim that I didn't cover in this video, the mod has such huge potential to transform Skyrim.
Hey man, what mods are you using for the health bars? Thos looks cool
That would be TrueHUD!
@@FormerlyBlue thanks man! This makes me want to install skyrim SE again
This looks pretty good for a survival play through
You can make an axe from tree branches using scrimshaw. This axe will only cut deadwood but it a better than anything
I absolutely HATE gear degradation systems. You never get to actually play the game because you're constantly focused on your equipment.
Ok, this looks really cool. I dont play anymore, but if I did this would be cool to try.
Very kewl! I'm just starting a new play through, but I want to try this.
Do a whole series
Superb narration!
Will you play this mod as a series?
Thanks, just dropped another vid with a permadeath playthrough of this concept!
Hey, you dont need the woodcutters axe to chop dead wood. Using the crafting lesser power from campfire, you can create an axe with some twigs
Oooh, that is useful to know! I'm planning to do a full playthrough of this soon, so that will come in handy!
I am a "follower guy" type of player. I might not be gonna last 1 hour in this playthrough. Dying of loneliness. But nice idea tho.

Welcome to the channel! It's definitely already "blown up" compared to my previous two videos!
Yes. Ill save dragons
I really like this but I feel the city’s would remain the same with damage here and there on buildings but balgruf is dead dragons reach obliterated overtaken by a dragon who enslaved whiterun hold, I say this because alduin was interested in enslaving man kind and building a dragon empire
I Love this! def gonna give it a try! Wish their was a mod that allowed you to have a handful of surviours and build a small settlement like fallout ish. I'd love that lol

Thanks! I was using Nordic UI and TrueHUD.
@@FormerlyBlue Thank you!!
Are you thinking about making a series out of this setup?
I definitely want to return to this, but the mod author for Alternate Skyrim is still working on add-ons I believe, so I'll likely wait until they've made more progress. I have so many other videos on my to-do list in the meantime!
Is this mod basically like dust from fallout NV?
I haven't played dust, but quite a few people have commented on how it's similar, so I would say they definitely have some overlapping ideas.
i wanna see a whole playthrough
I'll probably make it soon, people keep asking for it.
@@FormerlyBlue I'd wanna see how it works might even try it myself
are there any hidden safe settlements
When I watched this video you had "911" likes lol.
And nice mods you have might try to play skyrim with these too.
I’ve gotten almost everything here but the Experience mod. Anyone know where to find it? (Xbox)
Really interesting video idea are you going to do anymore of this mod? I had no clue the voice was ai until like 30 seconds before the end and then I saw another comment about. Its really crazy to see how far technology has come.
Yeah, I want to do a more full playthrough for sure!
God I missed apocalypse mods like those from Morrowind
The mod looks really cool, but it does seem like it forgets to take into account the other DLCs. Harkon successfully blocking the sun and Mirrak escaping Mora's realm don't seem to be touched on enough.
That's true, maybe the mod author will expand it to cover those aspects later.
@C00ki3Rim Oh interesting, I hadn't heard of that.
Very cool! 😊
How can I have this mod but with more survivors?
You could maybe use xEdit, or load mods that add NPC's after loading Shattered.
holy moly! this really intrigues me! so, can I use skyrim unbound with this? that avoids helgen start. I am already using skyrim unleveled instead of requiem (my usual choice). what about hunterborn for more meat, materials and alchemy?
Howdy! You don't need Unbound with this or any other Alt Start; Alternate Skyrim starts you off at the exit of the Helgen escape tunnel. Hunterborn should work well; it's somewhat too feature-intensive for my preference, but yeah you might like it!
@@FormerlyBlue thx! I'm trying to wrap my head around this, so I can plan my load order. I usually play the mages college, but that won't work with this mod, so will need spell tomes. don't usually bother with survival mode, but it would make sense here (despite hating the cold mechanism). So no DB and DG and hearthfires DLC? no followers? and none of the starting benefits of Unbound, so now I really need to pay attention to racial attributes. maybe drop aetherius and find a different racial mod.
@@marymuir8735 From what I've heard, Solstheim is actually left untouched, and the ferry guy is still alive at the Windhelm docks to take you there. But personally I'd pretend Solstheim doesn't exist and just focus on mainland Skyrim. So yeah, racial attributes would be important. I think you'd have a hard time finding upper-level spells, but the Alternate Skyrim author has made an optional add-on that apparently randomizes loot drops, so that might make spells more available.
@@FormerlyBlue oh, Solstheim is untouched, that's interesting. there's enough content there without the cultists that my mage could still buy spell tomes and get experience to level up. Did you try playing with just the base mod without the Alduin add on? One review I read made it sound boring without the Alduin add on, like just a survival game with no purpose or quests at all because of no npcs. So it sounds like the alduin add on is the best way to play this.
@@marymuir8735 Yeah this is with the Alduin add-on, it adds the draugr armies and dragons guarding cities. I definitely recommend it.
What HUD mod is that? I'm planning a playthrough of this and want that HUD.
TrueHUD!
@@FormerlyBlue Much obliged.
Not to diss your video but I just find it hilarious that original Skyrim (the land) was already so savage and poorly managed that with Alduin taking over barely anything changes. If I were to make an apocalyptic Skyrim mod, I'd let the Thalmor win because that would be more interesting.
Lol, fair point.
I didn't! As if I could fail! HAH! FUS.....
