Fun facts about this video!
1. Every moon or sun seen in the video was actually added in post
2. Nightmare Moon's mane was added entirely through post and took several hours to make for each shot.
3. I had the idea for this video since 2013, and in one form or another was scrapped 4 different times.

I find this song very creepy, because of the real world implications. How many of us can really change the world? Yet we want to.. and we usually throw our support behind people who we think can... And it often goes about as well as asking a demon for help.

That is truth others are nether good nor bad but the only thing you can truly control is yourself. I have a goal for 2024, to run 3 miles 2 or 3 days a week starting in November and see if my time of 34:24 has gotten better or worse.

What I love most about this, is the idea that Luna came to Celestia for help originally, but not receiving it, she took matters into her own hands out of desperation.
In all seriousness, Celestia seems like Luna's mother instead of sister when their 'younger' Like does anyone else get that vibe? :P

+Daringashia KS i make them blink by selecting the model then you should see lots of bars next to the screen drag the L and R eye close thing to max after that drag the smooth bar to the end then it should blink smoothly dont forget to press shift and scroll to desired length to make it go back to normal. I cant watch this without crying. The subtle animation and haunting vocals create the perfect atmosphere for this heart breaking drama. And i adore the opening with tiny Luna confiding in her Mother, Lady Faust, even knowing (in my own mind at least) that it was the loss of the royal Mother that sent Luna down her dark path and into the lair of a fallen Star Dragon. And the pain and anguish in Celestia's eyes and body language, as she takes up the chorus, alone, broken, her Mother and Sister gone. ...

The way the shadow falls on the master of the sun is heart shattering, I feel like it symbolizes her hesitation to shine her light knowing it would decimate the darkness.

This song... goes perfectly with this backstory behind Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, This brought tears to my eyes, I applaud you Herostrain
What I like about this video, is it doesn't play Celestia off as 'at fault' but the one Luna had relayed on to do the right thing when she was not able to. For her older sister to change the world when the youngest don't know what to do, as it allow for a stronger bond to be formed between the sisters... especially when at the end it is Celestia saying she doesn't know what to do.
Dude, just checked back on this video because my brain randomly thought of it today. I watched this when I was seven when this came out. Mind blowing.

Absolutely love this video, and now that I'm watching it again I think I've found an interesting way to interpret it. It seems like this is a much sadder version of the conflict between Luna and Celestia. Luna is shown as kind of sad throughout the video, and Nightmare Moon doesn't even put up a fight at the end. With the final lyrics showing the moon and Celestia alone, I feel almost like the message is Luna saying, "You obviously don't care about me or need me here, so I'll leave this all up to you." Really love this animation lol
I love how it shows how Luna is afraid of responsibility and just is passive to all that happens instead of taking life in her hands.
It shows how important is courage or else someone else will do what you don;t want to happen
Looking back on this now-- I think the most amazing aspect of this video is the cinematography.
Herostrain has a knack for storytelling through camera movement, as much or more so than the characters. The "hand-held" camera at 0:41 is so well done it looks real, and speaks to Luna's inner conflict and unstable emotions. The transition at 1:00 also expertly shows this, and leads into one of the most bad-ass shots in the film, stylistically speaking, possibly only rivaled by the super-wide shot at 1:23. This shot perfectly sets up the power and gravity of the situation Luna is getting herself into: that what she seeks is so much bigger than herself.
In addition to the cinematography, the post-production effects on Nightmare Moon's mane, and the moon at the beginning show a real innovative spirit in the production of this piece, and blend expertly into the SFM production material.
Really, the only thing lacking in this is some animation finesse. The animation is very good, don't get me wrong, but there's some little tweaks that could be done to the characters, specifically hair and mane movement, that would contribute further to the reality.
Overall, this is a fantastic piece, with quite possibly the best cinematography I've ever seen in a pony production-- and I very highly look forward to more content from Herostrain! ^.^

Honestly, this is one of my favorite sfm things. The animation is really great quality, and I love that it tells a story. One thing I found really impressive is how u did nightmare moon's hair, which a lot of sfm animators have yet to get right.

It was all done through After Effects. Lots of shape layers, tracking, green screens, and wave warps.

This is a beyond beautiful video. Its well paced, wonderfully animated, and has dark undertone that the original song has as well. Amazing work.
It kinda feels like the lyrics and the imagery are suggesting that Luna became Nightmare Moon on purpose to _force_ Celestia to change the world.

+omnimon2230 i think it was just Nightmares in genera. Luna didnt know where to go or "what to do" so she looked for the answer, unfortunately, in the wrong place. The Nightmare took control of Luna and used Luna to try and destroy Celestia... and obviously that didnt work out

This is incredible. Probably the best SFM pony video I've seen. The images matched the powerful music really well. And it's always a joy to see Luna/Nightmare Moon being badass.

I still love this, lord knows how many times I'll say that. Though I'll likely always end up hoping this gets remade with updated models at some point too, better mane physics etc. It's a passion project that will always be remembered by so many of us.
I love how they showed that Celestia has little to no remorse in banishing luna, because we are in Lunas point of view. And I guess that is what Luna thought at firsr when Celestia banished her. Maybe thats why she was singing instead of blocking Celestia's magic, because she never expected Celestia to banish her.
I LOVE this video. I keep coming back to it, and I think I'll keep coming back for a while more. You've managed to piece together a story that I find so simple, so moving, and so obvious right. Every time, my brain the lights up when I see Nightmare Moon continuing the song and Celestia finishing it.
Why did Luna turn to the Nightmare? Because she felt powerless.
Why did she feel powerless? Because that was always her position as the younger sister, being dependent on Celestia to move the world for her.
Why didn't Celestia see what was going on with Luna? Because she was never in Luna's position. She was always able to change the world, so why should Luna be any different?
In depending on Celestia for so long, Luna never learned to move the world by herself. When she wanted something Celestia would not give, she turned to the Nightmare because she had to turn to something other than herself. The Nightmare gave Luna what she asked for at the cost of everything else. In putting her sister down, Celestia felt the powerlessness that Luna always had, and in that powerlessness she finally realized her mistake.
It's all in this tiny animation. It's so perfect, and it's so beautiful. Thank you for making this.

I think the hardest and most interesting part of any episode would be for Twilight to do something similar to what Celeste had to do Luna, which would be to banish one of her dearest friends or family member. The part where Celestia cries at the end with a single tear was very moving. It expresses how difficult the decision was that she had the make and in the end she didn't like kill her sister she just banisher

Granted ,i realize that this is probably someones head-cannon about how things really went down between Celestia and Luna, and as such, I can learn to appreciate it for what it is.
I especially liked the interesting explanation of Luna's "jealousy" originally stemming from some demon, and not of her own accord.

Luna as a young filly really wanted to make the world a better place and tried to tell her sister to do it for her but she refused because she wanted LUNA to do it. So, when Luna was older she heard of a spirit that will give her great power that will make her be able to change the world,she went for it. When she got there the demon destroyed her and took over. At the end she just is freaking singing but that because the demon does not know Luna's world that well and has no idea what the elements of harmony were so the demon was sent away now knowing that next time she joins the world she will watch out for that which explains the mlp series because Nightmare moon seems to know what to do with the elements. This is my opinion so pls respect it.
