  • Freshman guard Rex Chapman hit 5 of 8 three-point goals on his way to his third 26-point performance of the season to lead the 18th-ranked Wildcats to an 85-51 rout over defending NCAA champion Louisville at Louisville.
"He's my son," Sutton said as he hugged Chapman during a postgame interview. "I've got three others, but I just adopted him. He was wonderful.
"God not only gave him great tools, but a great mind," Sutton said of the 19-year-old from Owensboro, Ky. "And he was blessed with having a coach as a father. I think he is the best freshman in the country."
It was the first time either team had won a regular-season game on their opponent's home court since the series resumed in 1983 after a 24-year layoff. Ed Davender scored 16 points, James Blackmon added 11 and Richard Madison grabbed 17 rebounds to help the Wildcats improve to 6-1.
Louisville (4-6) was led by Tony Kimbro and Felton Spencer, with 10 points each. Pervis Ellison, who had averaged 18.3 points per game, was held to 4 points. Ellison didn't have a point or rebound in the second half.
The Wildcats made 11 of 17 three-point attempts as they had four 5-0 spurts in the game. They led at halftime, 38-28.
Said Sutton: "We're not 34 points better than Louisville. It was just a game where everything fell into place."
Said Louisville Coach Denny Crum: "They did just about everything right. They beat us every way you can beat a team. Even when we did a good job--had a hand in somebody's face--they still made it.
"We're not going to go to sleep because we got beat. We're going to go out and try to get better. I don't know if we're getting better, but they're trying hard."
It was the biggest loss ever by a Louisville team in Freedom Hall and Crum's biggest setback in his 16 seasons with the Cardinals.
Virginia Tech beat Louisville, 81-61, Jan. 30, 1985 at Freedom Hall. Crum's worst loss was 86-64 to North Carolina Dec. 29, 1980 in the Winston Tire tournament in Los Angeles.
Late in the game, Louisville fans, disgusted with what they were witnessing, began cheering for the Wildcats.
Loyola (Chicago) 83, Illinois 82--Bernard Jackson scored 18 of his 31 points in the second half for the Ramblers (5-3), who stunned the ninth-ranked Illini (8-2) at Chicago.

Three pointer became a natinoal rule in the 1986-87 season. So if this game was played 12-27-86 the 3 ball was in effect

Do you think the UK/Louisville proximity rivalry is our version of the Duke/UNC thing

  • @brianarbenz7206
    @brianarbenz7206 4 года назад +1

Louisville fans and Denny Crum clamored for years for UK to play U of L, while Joe Hall and UK fans wished the issue would go away. Then Kentucky won 11 of the first 16 games in the series. What were they afraid of?

Man I remember this game. Rex Chapman was sensational. Louisville, coming off an NCAA title, was a pretty bad team in 1987. I think they barely made the NIT. Kentucky would go on and have an inconsistent season and lose to a Dennis Hopson led Ohio State in the NCAA first round

Louisville rejected an NIT bid that season. The Metro Conference didn't have a team in the NCAA Tournament that year as Memphis St. won the conference tournament but could not go to the NCAA tourney due to sanctions and no other Metro team got an at large berth

College basketball uses both years for rhe season. The 1987 tourney completed the 86-87 season. The NCAA Record Book considers the 3 pointer as instituted in 1986. Which is the 86-87 season.

UofL won in the beginning of the 1986 & closing of the 1985 season. When UofL played on 12-27-1986 the three point line was apart of the 1987 season & does not count as part of the Championship 1985-1986 Cardinal team. As this video even stated that This Cardinal team was the defending National Champions however UofL never won back to back Championships. This game was played the season after they won & not the Championship year.

True, they use both seasons, but when they raise any banner it is 1987 for the 1986-1987 season & so on. The season is split however no team has banners with split seasons. UofL won in 86, but they did play the next season of 86 with the 3 point line. UL never won a championship however after the 3 point line was set though. The 3 point was apart of the NBA way before college & the women's teams played with it the 2nd season in 1987-1988.

You are right that some teams had that line, but it wasn't a rule until the 1987 season. The 1986-1987 season is called the 1987 season however & not the 1986 season. The 1985-1986 season is the 1986 season.

The 1986-1987 season is the 1987 Championship season.

It did in the 1987 year, but not 1986. Most of the early 1980's was without the 3 point lines in College until 1987 so you are some what right. Louisville hasn't won a championship since the 3 point lines were regular on NCAA games though. lol

You are wrong. This year is considered the 1987 year & not the 1986 year. College Basketball is known by the year they played in March. For example if most of the 1902 season was played, but March Madness was in the 1903 season it would be the 1903 Championship Season & not 1902. Just because teams were playing in 1986 with the 3 point line doesn't mean it was the 1986 season. This video & season is counted as the 1987 season.
