Since i have this story i will share it i have met brian hyland 2 different occasions very friendly and has time for his fans he was close with del and i asked him about him and he said man no one was like del. Great compliment for a great performer
This was the era (50s & 60s) of "Good Music", in my opinion. Good looking guys & girls, no crotch grabbing, no vulgar lyrics - I miss this music so much. Del was a musical genius.
Deborah!!! Serdecznie pozdrawiam z Polski!!!❤❤❤
After the British invasion Del Shannon, like many American artists seemed to have been forgotten. He had a number of top quality hits and was heard regularly on Top 40 radio for most of the 60s
And his album the further adventures of charles westover is an over looked masterpiece of 60s psych pop rock that needs to be featured and championed today. That whole album is lovely and brilliant.
No one ever seems to comment on this, but in addition to being a legendary musician and gifted songwriter, he was a very handsome guy, I think even moreso in later years.
Mar Thivierge - I agree 1000%, better looking as he got older, but damn, too young to die at 55!! And I loved his voice too, full of charisma & so damn sexy - RIP my love ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes he was a good looking guy. One of his greatest hits LP that came out in 1987, entitled Runaway Hits. He's pictured sitting with his guitar and there's pretty girls sitting around him. His managers at Big Top Records told him to lie about his age. So he be in line with the Teen Idols like Fabian, Frankie Avalon, and Ricky Nelson. Del Shannon was older than these guys because Del was in his late 20's. His managers told him to knock off 5 years. It didn't matter Del Shannon was a top star and like Buddy Holly he was also ahead of his time in his music.
3 or 4 years ago I was hitchhiking up the west coast. It was my first day hitchhiking, I had just camped by a beach in the Malibu area. I was walking up highway 1, it was the summer in the peak of the California drought, but somehow it was raining that morning. No cars were picking me up and I was quickly realizing what a stupid idea it was to try and hitchhike my way around California. For some reason the song "Runaway" popped into my head and I sang it to myself repeatedly as I walked along the highway. I didn't remember who the song was by, and I couldn't believe I knew all the words. It had lodged itself in my subconscious at some point. Eventually I got one ride and then another. Anyway, the song helped me get through a weird day lol.
They arrested the neighbor and not the one playing the music. Apparently the cops or one of them knew who was singing. They knew who was singing because they appreciated Del Shannon's music. Perhaps the neighbor became loud and argumentative with the officers. Sometimes things will go the other way.
Dels music will always live on as well as one of the greatest singing voices of all time. His the man that electrified pop music. Falsetto vocals were his trademark.
That raw, roaring full throated voice of his that suddenly shifts into that heavenly falsetto is also a large part of his fantastic trademark vocal dynamic. So wish things had gone differently and that he'd made more fantastic music. "The further adventures of Charles Westover" is one of my favorite albums currently. It is brilliant 1960s psych pop rock at its finest. It deserved to be championed and promoted by his record company at the time but it wasn't and that's the only reason I can see why the album wasn't a hit. it is an incredible piece of work from start to finish
Del Shannon was huge in the 60s. It's notable that Del also did FROM ME TO YOU, which was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon before most people in the USA had ever heard of them. There's also RUclips videos of Del doing his songs during the 60s too. He brought something unique and really interesting that wasn't there before he was. You brought us good times and something new. God bless and RIP, Del Shannon.
Del Shannon I love you. When I make it to heaven you will be the first,VERY first person I will come to. I know you are there and I can't wait to see you and talk to you. You are so beautiful.
Now this what singing is. Great talent and musician that has vocial talent. These kids need to listen to this rather than hip hop crap. This man didn't need voice over and vibrations to have talent it is in his soal.
@@carlbaxley7362 ~ Thanks for the "insight" Sparky, but it's gonna be from 1989 until you can refute it with more provenance than, "i don't know where it's from". Check around YT and find clips some same concert attributed to 1989. Fact.
One of the greats who never got the respect he deserved. His suicide still seems fishy to me. He was a firearms enthusiast (or gun nut if you prefer) yet he used a .22 commit suicide. If I ever choose to light my own cigar I am taking the biggest gun out of the cabinet and going with it. Sure the .22 has killed a lot of guys. It has also turned a lot in to vegetables and just left others with nasty facial injuries. I just don't see how a guy who know as much as he did chose the smallest gun in his collection for the time where you absolutely only get one shot. Whatever happened, wherever you are Del, I hope you are resting in peace.

They are all fantastic musicians but that guy playing the piano/organ is out of this world !!!
Do you know about how he came to have that sound of that organ ???.
Now painless Del
Nothing wrong with memories though great.
Pete Wingfield.

Now that the world is crazy. I just go to what I love. The music I loved as a child 💖 Del Shannon was one of my special crushes ❤

Not only could Del sing he had a great stage presence ❤️
One of the great acts that sounded better live than on there records, Del always hit the notes no problem.
Always smiling to the cameras. Seems that he was happiest performing. Still listen to his music, he wrote such wonderful songs. Miss him.
Love this guy he is the best linda❤
Del Shannon deserves more views then what he has .Great songs.

Agreed, so many legends through the 50’s and 70’s imo. Like Alice cooper, Tom petty, del Shannon, Elvis, Roy Orbison, etc etc..

@mitchmorris2849 Then you gotta watch "American Graffiti." It;'s about that time, that world.
Del Shannon descanse em paz brother cantor excepcional Saudades 😢
Never get old listening to his music-him and Roy Orbison!
If I could visit heaven for a day, I would visit Del Shannon and Buddy Holly. Could not get any better! Rest in Paradise Del and Buddy!
This song was beyond awesome and genius. Without question.
Miss your music and talent DEL- rest in peace!!

He could sing anything! Always gave a great performance! Hats off to DEL SHANNON! ❤️
It may only be #466 on Rolling Stone's list of all time great songs but it's definitely in my Top 10.
Such sadness, a haunting voice, all about loss, I will always remember these great songs!!! You are loved, Del - RIP
I agree 100%

I agree he is fabulous
Glad I have the opportunity to hear Del Shannon
I have many of his records. I was and still upset about his passing.what a great singer.
I've always been a fan. I still listen to his music. Still seems fresh and new. Del was a true talent.
My first concert! 12 years old, 1961, nobody wanted to go, so I went alone. The Gardens at the PNE, Vancouver.

It would have been epic if some random dude in a cowboy hat stopped to pick you up. And you couldn’t believe it.,,,,it turns out to be Del Shannon.
I once played Del Shannon so loud my neighbor called the cops.... they came and arrested him.

Runaway marcó todo una época con su estilo particular,
Pero Del era más que Runaway!!!

Classic songs.
Maybe not the voice of Elvis but this guy had it all.
Much much much better than Elvis any way you look at it!

Miss Runaway and you
This song was Dels and Dels alone.. others have slaughtered this song . Leave greatness alone I say. R.I.P DEL
True...even "The King" couldn't touch "Charles Westover"...on "Runaway".
Genius
I'm amazed that he can hold the falsetto and then immediately drop effectively to his chest voice.

He would record two little songs back in in America in 1963:
FROM ME TO YOU. UNDER MY THUMB.
What year is this show from? Judging by the equipment (Keyboards, mics, etc.) it was definitely after 1970. Great performance by Del as always.
After Roy passed away they were gonna get Del to replace him unfortunately he passed before this could happen he would have made a sweet Wilbury!
Believe this clip is from his 1989 Australian tour, not too long before Del's unfortunate passing.

The name of the 2nd song is "Keep Searchin'" not Follow the Sun. And this couldn't have been 1961 as Keep Searchin' came out in late 1964.
Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun)...more exactly...
Thanks for posting but this is not from 1961. More like the early 80's.
Does anybody know where this was recorded?
Also did this loop back or did he open and close with Runaway?
This version is just a smidge too upbeat for me. The tempo conflicts with the yearning of the lyrics. All the other elements are fantastic.
