He talks about picking up bit by bit, and I appreciate you see that's how to help him is bit by bit, patiently. People don't want to be living like this, it's definitely an illness. It's also like he's afraid to accept help and be close with anyone, maybe because he's experienced such loss.

i think, i know, that he was never "fine", but that he had a structure security, love, stability when his parents lived, losing his parents, especially his mom removed every and any semblance of such structure, he has nobody he can feel safe with, he fears driving people away so he stays away I dread this for myself, I dread what wil happen if I lose my structure

I have worked with students who were traumatized and the moments they shut down and did not talk were scary because you did not know if they would start to scream and hurt you or be calm and passive. Be careful..
He lost his loved ones and never recovered from the trauma and grief. Grief can do this to people, especially when its your parents that loved you and raised you. So many of these lost souls have lost their mothers and the love they had from them, they then are so alone and spiral downwards it breaks my heart.
