If you're here for a refresher, you're golden If you want to learn the game from scratch, get outta here and click that 30 minute video you passed over on the way to this one. >:D
They speak the tru, tru. Also for returning players there are a few things this video gets wrong. For example, mechs can't trigger encounters. It says in the rulebook only your character can do that. This video is good for the general overview, but go to the long one if you didn't remember the fine details. Or honestly just read the rules, it'll probably take people less long than watching the video if they're not playing it for a group.
For how complex this game is, getting almost everything into an 8 min video is pretty impressive. Almost as impressive as the game itself... Can't wait to play this one.
Only characters can trigger encounters, you get to use one combat card per non-worker figure on a hex during combat, and you only receive your enlist bonus when you or an adjacent player activates the corresponding bottom-row action. Other than that, clear and concise rules explanation! Loved it!
I like the series but the music in this episode was too distracting. It needed to be lower or eliminated completely. I found myself unable to focus on Ivan for the music.
you made a few mistakes on this one Ivan. Only heroes can have encounters and you may only activate 2, 3 or 4 zones when you produce depending on how much you upgraded the action and/or if you built the windmill. The recruit upgrades only give you the bonus when you or your immediate left/right neighbors use the same action. You can use one combat card for each mech/hero you have in the combat. Also the loser of combat receives a combat card if they spent at least one power on their dial.
As for that last sentence, I believe you can spend 0 on the dial but use a card, and that will also make you eligible to receive a combat card if you lose. I don't remember exactly how the rules phrased it, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works because I remember specifically wondering if that was allowed, and looking it up to clarify.
lorddread7 thank you for the extra information! we'll see about making some changes to the video. We can't include all the details sadly, as I like to say at the top, this is a quick overview!
Both lorddread7 and Scott are correct. You can spend 0 power on combat. "You may do this even if you spend 0 power on you Power Dial." quoted from page 22. I was just about to point out these minor mistakes. There are obviously several more details about the game that are important for actually playing, and these videos are not meant to be replacements for instructions, but these aspects are mentioned in the videos so it's semi-important to get them correct. (though it wouldn't break the game if they weren't!). Page 31 (Highlighted Rules) has some of the aspects and important rules summed up. Specifically the ones I noticed were about characters only (not mechs) being able to claim encounters and the Enlist action bonus being only from the left and right players. Though if you only have 2 or 3 players, then you still get it "when anyone" uses that action. I love these videos too! keep them coming!
I've played this twice but forgot how to play it and this was the perfect refresher to get back into it! Can't wait to use my painted mini upgrades 😀. Thanks for the video James Spader.
It took me close to 3 hours to figure out this game and then I watched this. Should have watched first. Thank for the vid, cleared up a lot of stuff. The game really isn’t overly complicated but still intricate enough.
I'm so pleased to see this game receiving so much attention; it's a huge amount of fun, and really deserves to do well. I've played some of Stonemaier Games' previous products, but I really do think this is the best.
Thank you so much! I was watching other tutorials and doubting my ability to play tonight at my church's Strategy Board Game Night! Thanks to you, I've decided to give it a go!❤❤❤
Indeed, I was wondering how he'd fit it all in with just 8 minutes of video, but what's great about Scythe is that it really does become simple to understand after a couple of turns. It's intimidating, but it's not super complicated.
Nicely done. I do believe that the enlistment bonus only applies when you or a neighboring player performs the bottom row action, not when any player does.
Great overview which I've learnt at least one new thing from although I think you should've mentioned how the factory affects final score (because some players often forget).
Thank you Ivan for this quick explanation, there is GDC talk "How game boards matters" that shows a couple of board games that maybe you are familiar with. This one, Scythe, is the first time I heard of it and looks amazing. Do you have any video showing a real-time Scythe match? Thank you.
3:14 Wrong, you can only produce on two or three territories with upgrades. If you have workers on 5 tiles by default you can only produce from two of them. Not all of them.
Terrific video, Ivan! Impressive how you managed to sum Scythe up in such a short amount of time. Now if we could get Wil to play Scythe on Tabletop...
Wanna play it right now? Download TableTopia and you will be able to play for free! Join TableTopia's Discord to find players who are willing to join your game :)
Can you do Warhammer Quest - the card game. That one has the wors rulebook I have ever seen and Can not get over the base ideas. I was literally unable to play the first game as it trow one milion things at you from the start.
Succinct summary of a complex game. Game plays well because it’s designed so well and thematic. I’ve only played twice but am watching some videos to see how we may have played incorrectly😂.
one comment, When you are talking about objects like the players board. I would like to see a picture of that while you talking about it and maybe pointers at the parts you are describing, Great videos though. I love how short they are even though the game is complex.
It is 4 or 5 years after I bought the game and I have TAUGHT it many times. It's a favorite of mine. It is overwhelming when your first opening it up but it's so streamlined and intuitive that I kind of laugh at how confused I was at all the videos. The best way to learn is to just start playing!
Geek and Sundry decided to double dip off the success of Table Top.They put it up on a subscription video service. Don't go paying them for that. Just hold out until they release it on youtube.
I can't handle the music in the background, sorry. It was like a dentist drill going in my ear while trying to pay attention to something. Don't get me wrong, I love jazz. Just not when trying to listen to someone speak, that is one of the only times I dislike hearing it.
Please ignore the suggestions to turn the music down, or limit it to the intro only. Turn the music OFF. It is annoying. Any music would be distracting.
@@jkoclanis67 Thanks for checking that I understood that part of the rule. I did check it properly after seeing the video. I've only ever played Scythe as a two player game so the other players are always on my left (and right). :)
Pretty sure Rodney Smith of Watch It Played already did a how to play for Scythe. any chance of doing ones for games he hasn't done? There are quite a few games to choose from.
that ragtime background music is driving me insane - too noticeable and jarring. Keep it for your intro and then cut it out. Had to stop watching because of it.
Not sure why this video is still up. He made so many mistakes on the rules that this video will only mess you up. I recommend they take this down and you should go watch Rodney Smiths How It's Played to learn Scythe correctly.
Sorry. Didn't enjoy this one. I found I needed to watch other guides and read the rules to follow some of what was said so as a guide for a newbie it fell a little short for me. But you asked for feedback so...The player mats are pretty key and we get 'arty' angle shots where half the mat is out of focus, or overhead where they are tiny. Surely a close up to help explain exactly HOW the unlockable top action changes and HOW the bottom changes would have been useful. We could also see the 8 (4 x top/bottom) actions you are describing. The recruit bit was confusing as you should have had the recruit in place first and remove it to make the point. Moving it off the faction card onto the mat and then off again wasn't helpful. "One time benefit from moving them over" - to where? - the map? the faction card? To another slot somewhere? [I know the answer - Im saying its not clear to someone new] I'd have left that sentence after the word 'benefit'I also don't think you have four options during your turn - you have three unless its the first turn as you cant reselect an option from last round - your player piece indicates which this was.Getting Scythe into 7 1/2 mins was a big ask. Well done.
This series would be more successful if it was more colorful like TableTop. Making it look like a dull 80's/90's classroom film hosted by a homeless guy really kills the mood.
I couldn't watch this because the music is nearly the same level as the voice - makes it too hard to discern what you're saying. Turn down the music! In fact why spoil your video by having music at all, it's unnecessary!

I had to stop watching after a few minutes unfortunately.
I just played this for the first time tonight. I got my butt royally kicked and loved every second of it.

Great tutorial! I've heard that digital version of Scythe is in production, which is awesome!
on the recruite, you only get that benefit from others who use it only if they're directly to the right or left of you. Not just anybody :)
Am I the only one who was completely fine with the music and didn't even notice it?
I've heard worse, but if it was a little quieter it would be nice
3:14 Wrong, you can only produce on two or three territories with upgrades. If you have workers on 5 tiles by default you can only produce from two of them. Not all of them.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this similar to Dune: Imperium but minus the deck building?

8 minutes! 22 minutes better than that other dude, well done 👍🏻
I wanna play this game so much. I have Euphoria, another game by Stonemeier Games, and I love it.
My friend describes Euphoria as getting stuff done while keeping everyone happy and stupid. :P
That is precisely the lore of the game and it is hilarious to think about.

You guys should get Ivan to make an ASMR video. It would be so good!
It sounds like the complexity of Agricola's resource management, but if you could pilot a mech over to destroy your neighbors crops or sheep.
that's a pretty great description tbh
Just played. Got 2nd place with Norse + Industrial, just 2 points below the winner. God damn!
Wow, I didn't understand that at all. LOL! I am totally screwed when it comes to learning this game, aren't I? :D I might need a tutor.

Watch a better video, this vid is more for if u played in the past but if u forgot the rules. Watch night around a tables video
It just made me crazy.....It's sooooooop bloody complex....I fell in love with monopoly after watching this🤣...
I didn't know James Spader played board games!
I ordered today yawning portal, scythe, gloomhaven and mage knight ult edition......ill be bussy😭
They need to play this on tabletop
Is he on the starship enterprise?
Looks a bit complex, but pretty cool.
allenr 316 it's quite light when you play. It just takes a couple of turns to figure out.
I think you said on here Mechs can get encounter tokens but that's not true. Only Character

Water, Comb
I think you got a few of the rules wrong (for instance, it's one combat card per combat unit)
Was anyone else expecting something involving the Grim Reaper when they saw the name "Scythe"?
Also, whoever gave the 'okay' for the artwork for the name of the game screwed up big time. That's a sickle, not a scythe...
It is a scythe. Only converted to a weapon, like on this drawing:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Kościuszko_Uprising_army_6.JPG
4:57 "...when you or another player". Wait! What? "Another player"? 😬 sounds like we've been playing it incorrectly.
It's only the players to your left and right (or yourself) when they use that action, not "any" other player.
