Well, to put it in perspective if you do ed2 runs, which is pretty easy and old content, you can make like 70 mil an hour. So, 20 hours of bossing and you'll have 1.4bil that would be enough for you to have near max mage sans FSOA or max melee. You just don't need every ability, item, or prayer buff. Max out a single style and if you ever accomplish that then max out a secondary

Interesting how things have changed over the years. I remember when the game came out, for the longest time melee was king, then around ascension crossbows is when range was ridiculously OP all of a sudden which lasted until I stopped playing about a year after araxi released. Interesting to hear mage is getting time to shine now.
It came full circle. Back in RuneScape classic, magic was the strongest because you could wear full rune armor and it wouldn’t negatively affect your ability to hit with it

Well, looks like you may love the Vestments of Havoc, they're Melee META for EVERY single boss where K.O. Potential is Low. When you feel like you're about to take lots of damage, like High Enrage Telos or HM Kerapac, or even High Enrage Zamorak, use TMW Armour, outside of those cases there's very little reason not to use VoH, also you could make some Biting Gizmo like [Biting 4 + Genocidal] and see the damage ramp up dramatically at some bosses. Also Solo Solak is a Big Big Bonus because Grim Pages are about to drop now, so if you can add a Grim to your Melee Setup, you'll be having the time of your life.
just got back into the game. im lvl 10 arc and dont have animate dead yet. should i upgrade to the wyvern or wand first. it will prob take me weeks to get the 80 arc required.
I'd say the best style is the one you're more familiar with, but given recent additions and weapons. I'd go with magic. I even dubbed it the "Helmet Style" because it's so safe to use, you won't be able to hurt yourself using it, no skill needed either, just pop up Animate Dead, wear your Cryptbloom, setup your Crit Stick and let the game play itself while you think about other things... Yeah, that's why Magic is a Helmet Style.
Nice video pro-tocks, Ranged is always my favourite, i do like using mage for its new tank meta at certain places like Zuk, Kera and Telos. Melee is dead to me. Its too intense to use.

GREAT video! sums up the combat triangle with up to date thoughts and reviews of the 3 styles! here is my thoughts on the combat triangle (if anyone cares to read :D) : unless you dont mind switching weapons about 15 times ea minute, magic is not an option for you, there is a trick called 4TAA that if you wanna deal good magic damage, you need to use it, otherwise you might as well have full revolution with ranged or melee without any weapon switches and you will be dealing more dmg, with no intensity at all, personally after a lot of years playing this game i stopped enjoying magic lately, i played with the best in slot gear for a while and it was very satisfactory, dealing the most damage while being the team tank, i dont know how new players will find this concept appealing, i sincerely hope this changes, one style dominates all aspects of combat, otherwise you need to put more effort into mastering a different style than you would in magic, and if you like to be tank there is no other options for you, its magic style only for tanks, even the 1 billion gp melee tank armour can be surpassed by a super cheap t75 magic armour and a few runes to cast a spell, personally if this game was a new game am looking into and happened to watch this video by protoxx i would never think of joining the game, protoxx spoke the truth about runescape combat, and its up to us to decide what combat style to use. my thought on other styles - melee - is kinda "less" switches per minute, but your switching a lot of weapons in order to deal high damage, IMO its simply not fun at all, most of the bosses have mechanics where you need to move, making melee already lose on damage output if taking time into consideration (dps/dpm...), too many weapons to juggle, one incorrect switch will really affect your damage rotation, and most players will not be the supreme masters of switchscape so most of us will end up misclicking once in a while, beside you would expect melee given its weakness of no damage output while moving to dodge a boss mechanic, to be tanky... it is so not... for some reason magic can be twice as tanky as the best melee armour and setup. the vamp scrimshaw of healing mentioned in the video is a bad choice if you are bossing, it sacrifices a lot of damage by using it instead of any book that can deal damage, it is used for survivability but if that is a problem to you might as well then use the tank style (magic), so to sum melee up at most bosses (not all as said in the video) it will be overall lower damage, require more switches and more weapons, more intense kind of play, require more healing because of the fact that its not tanky enough, and my personal opinion - not fun. ranged - this was the meta for a long time (before magic got some updates), but not anymore, i think ranged is the best style to use if your a casual player and 100% the style to use if your a new player, do note that magic players with the same gear tier will probably deal more damage, and in the same time be more tanky than you are, i do believe that with the correct gear and a skilled player ranged damage will match that of magic, very much thanks to the new ranged weaponry introduced lately into the game, but most players will simply not reach this point, a point where this style also becomes very intense (more intense than magic IMO that most players who are willing to give this dedication to get better at the game might as well chose to do it with magic since its easier to reach such a point of skill),for the casual player ranged still provides good enough damage to be able to solo, or to join an elite team for group bossing, the "elitest" of teams will probably require you to have magic style not ranged tho. i personally think that if you want to enjoy the game for the long time, do not look into becoming the player with the highest damage output or the tankiest player, just be a casual player, find the style that fits you, and i am sure that you will still be able to solo bosses, join big teams for high PVM bosses, and also enjoy the other aspects of the game (slayer, skilling and reaching 99s and 120s, questing...)
This was a great video man! I am definitely a magic main even before all this GW3 stuff. I was just starting to learn how to use it and it was the worst combat style at the time. Once they gave magic all the buffs I was able to get my hands on a lot of upgrades after goin broken. Full Cryptbloom, Wand of the Praesul, Imp Core, all the abilities except Magma Temp…. Made me love Magic even more. However, melee is my 2nd favorite even though it is harder to use and they have recently tried balancing melee out to be really good but that didnt work. I was still getting all my upgrades for it. I need the whip and the Zuk sword and the new armor besides that I got just about everything for it.
Derr derrr yeah I'm also an insecure 30 year old who plays runescape and I'm not smart enough to figure out how i should be playing either... aw man. Thank God we have protoxx here to tell us that everything is alright and we should use whatever style we want. Oh joy! Now I feel less insecure. I’ve always been a hybrid but my goto favourite is definitely ranged this was due to it being my first 99 when I was like 12 when eoc dropped I still kept using ranged for pking with mage/melee as hybrid

"Rheyo RS" made a video about them, I've been using mine for a while now and i think they are Great, however if you want a TL;DR and my takeaway about VoH: - Vestments of Havoc are META at bosses with low "Personal" K.O. Potential. If you're taking too much damage at a particular boss; and it depends on your own skill too! Use Trimmed Masterwork Armour, some cases include: High Enrage Telos, Solo Solak, High Enrage Zamorak Solo, HM Kerapac Solo, High Enrage Arch Glacor. HM Zuk. For everything Else, VoH is BIS and you should use them. Yes even the remaining Slayer Tasks that are best done with Melee. Slap [Biting 4 + Genocidal] on them and see your damage ramp up.

I hope you were joking about the melee survivability. Zerk absolutely tanks your health especially in thr havoc set, while a style like magic even in elite tect, just stays at full hp from an fsoa spec with blood barrage.

honestly, for me it depends what i am doing at the time in question. like if i am going for one of the gwd1 boss logs (not kree) i pick melee on my taskman account and just afk it, if slayer it depends on what monster i am killing, i dont have the best gear yet or perks (ironman account and a taskman account) if learning a new boss i usualy pick magic with it beeing my strongest dps style atm unless something like nex

Now that my Strength and Attack skills are both at 106, I can start working up Magic and Ranged at 105 each (even though combat skills don't do anything after Lv99). And given how long it took me to go from 105 to 106, I think I'll have plenty of time.
I cannot decide between the Inquisitor's staff or the staff of Sliske because the staff of Sliske is technically 80m cheaper, since you need to buy the enhancement of afflicition for 150m to fully enable the powers of the Inq staff. But lets be honest at this price point - 80m more or less doesn't really matter. Then the staff of Sliske is tier 92 just how it is while the Inq staff has a tier 97 damage with the appropriate gear, boosts, passive effect (Dark wither) and the enhancement of afflicition according to the wiki. And the Inq staff is only useful at bosses and slayer creatures where its susceptible, I know this covers alot of relevents bosses and creatures, but it ain't every boss or creature, where the staff of Sliske will give the same output at every boss and slayer creature. Furthermore the Inq staf's spell damage only scales up to lvl 80 spells. So the staff of Sliske's spell damage is higher for sure. Then the staff of Sliske has a special attack. I don't know whether it's any good but it has one while the Inq staff only has it's passives to compensate for that. So my question is which staff should i get? Taking into account that this will be the main staff for a long time, that I will use for all my pvming. At least where magic is a viable option. Thanks in advance!
Not squishy but Fluid. You need to manage your adrenaline efficiently to get your money's worth using Ranged. If you need more adren, use the Inspiration Aura. No need to use Grico Hydrix Bolts unless you're absolutely desperate about Adrenaline.
@@Kranon that’s definitely an advantage ranged has. But comparing survivability across the 3 styles, ranged comes in last place. I guess the one argument you could make is, since you’re able to amass adrenaline easily for ranged you could exhaust more of it into defensive thresholds. But regardless of that , there is no unique damage mitigation for ranged players unlike the other 2 styles.
Melee has so many switches that you'll get carpal tunnel faster than you get 120 all combatant stats, but it _is_ far cheaper than both Magic and Ranged due to non-existent ammo upkeep, on top of gear and abilities being somewhat reasonable to buy... if Jagex could be bothered to give a way to massively increase the hitcap outside crits for melee. Also EZK EoF is an abomination.
I sold all melee I could and was missing just EZK to have it all. Too much tryharding for very little rewards and almost no fun factor. Both ranged and magic are more fun to play. Cryptbloom (or Sup Seasinger) +T88 +GCONC are enough to enjoy it.
I like melee the most, because I enjoy the complexity of it But I don't like the idea of having to sacrifice pocket slot effect for survivability, so I end up switching between a book and a vamp scrim which is just more switches into melee. Now as a "melee only" ironman, it's not my place to complain about problems with melee. The one single advantage that melee has over range/mage is the upkeep of ammo but at least they are somewhat sustainable, vamp scrims aren't, unless you have maxed ports and farm them daily. I don't like dailies and I don't have the time to runecraft runes. As an ironman, melee is the hardest/longest style to unlock to become useful for PVM (disregarding slayer). And it's quite difficult to upgrade melee gear while using melee: nex is a pain to melee, telos is awful with drygores, zuk is a pain and a half to melee in normal mode, let alone HM. Glacor is frustrating with every style, but a lot slower with melee. ed2 bosses are fine, the dungeon is a pain to melee due to random black dragons requiring stupid accuracy. Zamorak is actually a lot of fun to melee, but it requires vamp scrims or a team to carry you. And in a team scenario you kind of get screwed over for using the melee bleeds, that jagex keeps pushing on us. tl;dr. magic is definitely the best and also the easiest style to use when comparing the amount of input needed.
magic is best to start with too because most creatures are just weak to magic and the accuracy is like rare candy at early levels, you just dont have it. but this goes out the window immediately if you have someone boost your levels at ED trash runs
never recommend people camp ruby baks.... ur making people fall for that noob-trap even more. ruby baks can actually lower ur hits to. if the target is below a certain max hp or their hp left is below a certain %. making the player do more damage with basic no effect bolts than they would have with rubys
Well, after gaining 405m+ magic xp on a single account, I think you can tell which style works best for me XD animate dead really sold it for me as I can now afk abyssal lords and make the best afk money in the game for 15-60 minutes every day (depending on task luck)!
@@skillfulactor09 Yes! I have many ways of making GP, but if I had to only rely on abby lords for whatever reason, I would still be in the clear (and then some)! Each scourge is 200m+ so even if it takes you 5 weeks to get one, you're still breaking even (it's a 1/2l drop rate when on task) :D
Issue with these type of videos is that they keep going on about price. Ironmen don't have any prices. They have to unlock whatever it is themselves. I care much more about which style is easiest to get stong at the easiest. I have no idea if I can beat nex. Right now I'm doing archeology in the hopes of getting the staff or spear.
Well which is best really depends on what your doing and how much you can spend. Only have 500k for a gear set? melee will be infinitly better then mage and range since you can get very fast tier 85ish gear super cheap. Where as if you have a couple hundred mill then perhaps a mage setup with animate dead will prove much better then both melee and range while range and magic get better and better as you get into the billions while melee starts falling behind
incorrect why magic is meta rn, it is not FSOA, it's cryptbloom. If cryptbloom was a hybrid armor, alot players willr emove magic to ranged. That's the problem. Not the dps, cause range wins in most scenario's from magic at the moment
You just need to work towards them one at a time, and expect it to take a while. Find low to mid level bosses that give decent money, or get the drops yourself, Ironman style.
@@BrutalAsKittens yes and no. Elder god arrows consumption is insane, also, Runes Consumption with the FSOA is also something to take into consideration. So Ryan isn't too far off. Ranged and Mage at the high end do consume plenty of resources.

You then go on to talk about a guthix staff spec, which has exactly the same affinity strength as quake, and costs 10 more adrenaline. You also say ranged can't do the same thing. As though black stone arrows don't exist and aren't the best version of these debuffs if the boss doesn't clear phases.
i was using fsoa with cryptbloom and gosh it was such a boring gameplay, i switch to range and made more dps and i enjoy it more, bought an sgb with sirenic and start smashing everything, love it more than magic!

Melee is Far from Lazy mind you. If you want Lazy, Strap your Safety Helmet on, then use Mage with Cryptbloom and Animate Dead. And I'm being serious, it is that easy and low effort.
Range is by far my favorite. 1st 99 and 200m and still ranging. However, Mage, in this current meta, is the "best" combat style, being that you can have the most dps whilst having the most damage reduction. For the aforementioned reason, I feel like Jagex definitely dropped the ball on the balancing idea.

Range is my favorite and is lacking in terms of updates. Mage and meel have recieved all the new abilities, armour and weapons in the past year. Range needs t95 armour Codexs Cosmetics to catch up with the rest.

Melee gets really sweaty at the top end, so many switches! It feels rewarding when you do it right and don't die in your berserk.

I used to love melee before fsoa came out. Melee just have way too many switches for my taste. But I would like melee to be my go-to again one day.
I’ve always been a hybrid but my goto favourite is definitely ranged this was due to it being my first 99 when I was like 12 when eoc dropped I still kept using ranged for pking with mage/melee as hybrid
Melee has gotten a lot more fun with the Vestments of Havoc set. Idk if I missed you doing a video on it, but if you get a chance to do one I’d like to hear your thoughts on that

"Rheyo RS" made a video about them, I've been using mine for a while now and i think they are Great, however if you want a TL;DR and my takeaway about VoH:
- Vestments of Havoc are META at bosses with low "Personal" K.O. Potential.
If you're taking too much damage at a particular boss; and it depends on your own skill too! Use Trimmed Masterwork Armour, some cases include: High Enrage Telos, Solo Solak, High Enrage Zamorak Solo, HM Kerapac Solo, High Enrage Arch Glacor. HM Zuk.
For everything Else, VoH is BIS and you should use them. Yes even the remaining Slayer Tasks that are best done with Melee. Slap [Biting 4 + Genocidal] on them and see your damage ramp up.

I hope you were joking about the melee survivability. Zerk absolutely tanks your health especially in thr havoc set, while a style like magic even in elite tect, just stays at full hp from an fsoa spec with blood barrage.

honestly, for me it depends what i am doing at the time in question. like if i am going for one of the gwd1 boss logs (not kree) i pick melee on my taskman account and just afk it, if slayer it depends on what monster i am killing, i dont have the best gear yet or perks (ironman account and a taskman account) if learning a new boss i usualy pick magic with it beeing my strongest dps style atm unless something like nex

I too have fun playing with Mage on Autopilot while i strap a helmet on my head to avoid hurting myself.
I like melee because it's the only style that you can craft cheap T90 armor without RNG

Now that my Strength and Attack skills are both at 106, I can start working up Magic and Ranged at 105 each (even though combat skills don't do anything after Lv99). And given how long it took me to go from 105 to 106, I think I'll have plenty of time.
I cannot decide between the Inquisitor's staff or the staff of Sliske because the staff of Sliske is technically 80m cheaper, since you need to buy the enhancement of afflicition for 150m to fully enable the powers of the Inq staff. But lets be honest at this price point - 80m more or less doesn't really matter.
Then the staff of Sliske is tier 92 just how it is while the Inq staff has a tier 97 damage with the appropriate gear, boosts, passive effect (Dark wither) and the enhancement of afflicition according to the wiki. And the Inq staff is only useful at bosses and slayer creatures where its susceptible, I know this covers alot of relevents bosses and creatures, but it ain't every boss or creature, where the staff of Sliske will give the same output at every boss and slayer creature.
Furthermore the Inq staf's spell damage only scales up to lvl 80 spells.
So the staff of Sliske's spell damage is higher for sure. Then the staff of Sliske has a special attack. I don't know whether it's any good but it has one while the Inq staff only has it's passives to compensate for that.
So my question is which staff should i get? Taking into account that this will be the main staff for a long time, that I will use for all my pvming. At least where magic is a viable option.

Not squishy but Fluid. You need to manage your adrenaline efficiently to get your money's worth using Ranged.
If you need more adren, use the Inspiration Aura. No need to use Grico Hydrix Bolts unless you're absolutely desperate about Adrenaline.
@@Kranon that’s definitely an advantage ranged has. But comparing survivability across the 3 styles, ranged comes in last place. I guess the one argument you could make is, since you’re able to amass adrenaline easily for ranged you could exhaust more of it into defensive thresholds. But regardless of that , there is no unique damage mitigation for ranged players unlike the other 2 styles.

Melee has so many switches that you'll get carpal tunnel faster than you get 120 all combatant stats, but it _is_ far cheaper than both Magic and Ranged due to non-existent ammo upkeep, on top of gear and abilities being somewhat reasonable to buy... if Jagex could be bothered to give a way to massively increase the hitcap outside crits for melee.
Also EZK EoF is an abomination.
I sold all melee I could and was missing just EZK to have it all. Too much tryharding for very little rewards and almost no fun factor. Both ranged and magic are more fun to play. Cryptbloom (or Sup Seasinger) +T88 +GCONC are enough to enjoy it.
They should turn some of the melee stuff into passive unlocks

I like melee the most, because I enjoy the complexity of it But I don't like the idea of having to sacrifice pocket slot effect for survivability, so I end up switching between a book and a vamp scrim which is just more switches into melee.
Now as a "melee only" ironman, it's not my place to complain about problems with melee. The one single advantage that melee has over range/mage is the upkeep of ammo but at least they are somewhat sustainable, vamp scrims aren't, unless you have maxed ports and farm them daily. I don't like dailies and I don't have the time to runecraft runes.
As an ironman, melee is the hardest/longest style to unlock to become useful for PVM (disregarding slayer).
And it's quite difficult to upgrade melee gear while using melee: nex is a pain to melee, telos is awful with drygores, zuk is a pain and a half to melee in normal mode, let alone HM. Glacor is frustrating with every style, but a lot slower with melee. ed2 bosses are fine, the dungeon is a pain to melee due to random black dragons requiring stupid accuracy.
Zamorak is actually a lot of fun to melee, but it requires vamp scrims or a team to carry you. And in a team scenario you kind of get screwed over for using the melee bleeds, that jagex keeps pushing on us.
tl;dr. magic is definitely the best and also the easiest style to use when comparing the amount of input needed.
magic is best to start with too because most creatures are just weak to magic and the accuracy is like rare candy at early levels, you just dont have it.
but this goes out the window immediately if you have someone boost your levels at ED trash runs

Magic is easy scape. I personally use range because its most fun with ECB, SGS, the new arrows and last guardian bow.
Magic is a "Helmet" Style. Y'know, so easy and low skill, it stops players from hurting themselves while playing or thinking.

never recommend people camp ruby baks.... ur making people fall for that noob-trap even more. ruby baks can actually lower ur hits to. if the target is below a certain max hp or their hp left is below a certain %. making the player do more damage with basic no effect bolts than they would have with rubys
Well, after gaining 405m+ magic xp on a single account, I think you can tell which style works best for me XD animate dead really sold it for me as I can now afk abyssal lords and make the best afk money in the game for 15-60 minutes every day (depending on task luck)!

@@skillfulactor09 Yes! I have many ways of making GP, but if I had to only rely on abby lords for whatever reason, I would still be in the clear (and then some)! Each scourge is 200m+ so even if it takes you 5 weeks to get one, you're still breaking even (it's a 1/2l drop rate when on task) :D

They should all do the same damage on Pvm. All styles need an attack, def, and strength stat. Pvp should be different.

Issue with these type of videos is that they keep going on about price. Ironmen don't have any prices. They have to unlock whatever it is themselves. I care much more about which style is easiest to get stong at the easiest. I have no idea if I can beat nex. Right now I'm doing archeology in the hopes of getting the staff or spear.
Well which is best really depends on what your doing and how much you can spend. Only have 500k for a gear set? melee will be infinitly better then mage and range since you can get very fast tier 85ish gear super cheap. Where as if you have a couple hundred mill then perhaps a mage setup with animate dead will prove much better then both melee and range while range and magic get better and better as you get into the billions while melee starts falling behind

incorrect why magic is meta rn, it is not FSOA, it's cryptbloom. If cryptbloom was a hybrid armor, alot players willr emove magic to ranged. That's the problem. Not the dps, cause range wins in most scenario's from magic at the moment
Upgrades cost way too much for mid level players trying to break through into the upper echelons
You just need to work towards them one at a time, and expect it to take a while. Find low to mid level bosses that give decent money, or get the drops yourself, Ironman style.

Probably an old thought process, but I don’t want to pay for runes or arrows. That’s why I stick with Melee.
You rarely use up runes and ammo with abilities not to mention they are a lot cheaper then they were pre eoc

Elder god arrows consumption is insane, also, Runes Consumption with the FSOA is also something to take into consideration.

i was using fsoa with cryptbloom and gosh it was such a boring gameplay, i switch to range and made more dps and i enjoy it more, bought an sgb with sirenic and start smashing everything, love it more than magic!

Range is by far my favorite. 1st 99 and 200m and still ranging. However, Mage, in this current meta, is the "best" combat style, being that you can have the most dps whilst having the most damage reduction.
For the aforementioned reason, I feel like Jagex definitely dropped the ball on the balancing idea.
If you want to be absolutely sweaty af then melee. Mage is the easiest. And range, well idk what to tell you there gg.
