The first group gets to be featured in the next single, then the next group in ranking Get to be in the b-song of the single, so on. It’s kind of like a popularity thank you to the popular girls. They also have a paper rock scissors tournament where the process of who gets to be in the next single is similar but instead of fan vote, it based off of luck because of paper rock scissors. The members usually dress up and it’s fun. It’s important too because let’s say if someone who ranked 97 in fan votes in the last single, won first place in paper rock scissors tourney, than it’s a huge game changer for their idol career
16 top populer member called senbatsu, they sing main song and do media (mv, tv, radio, mags) promotion, rank 17-32 sing couple song in the single and being backup member for senbatsu. Other lower rank member just perform in theater and concert, never participate for media promotion.

Other centers are through the year are chosen by managment and once by a rock paper scissors event, which gives a chance for more unknown members.

In the performance where the original center cannot perform, the management will choose other member to fill in that position. 2. There are many reasons, why the original center cannot perform. One of them is that the original center has already graduated from the group (left the group). For Heavy Rotation, the first song they performed at MAMA, the original center is Oshima Yuko. She graduated in 2014. Before she graduated, she chose Mukaichi Mion (the one who got 13th place this year) to be her successor as a center of this song during an event of the group, so Mion is considered chosen by the original center and often performed as a center of heavy rotation since then. 3. The election ranking only matters for the single after the election. For example, the recent election was for choosing the top 16 member for their 53th single of AKB48. So, Matsui Jurina, who ranked 1st, would be the official center for this single. If their are any media performances of the 53th single, which Matsui Jurina can perform, she will always be in a center position. But it doesn't mean that Jurina will also be a center for the performance of other songs.

1. Each song of AKB48 has its official/original center. In the performance where the original center cannot perform, the management will choose other member to fill in that position.
2. There are many reasons, why the original center cannot perform. One of them is that the original center has already graduated from the group (left the group). For Heavy Rotation, the first song they performed at MAMA, the original center is Oshima Yuko. She graduated in 2014. Before she graduated, she chose Mukaichi Mion (the one who got 13th place this year) to be her successor as a center of this song during an event of the group, so Mion is considered chosen by the original center and often performed as a center of heavy rotation since then.
3. The election ranking only matters for the single after the election. For example, the recent election was for choosing the top 16 member for their 53th single of AKB48. So, Matsui Jurina, who ranked 1st, would be the official center for this single. If their are any media performances of the 53th single, which Matsui Jurina can perform, she will always be in a center position. But it doesn't mean that Jurina will also be a center for the performance of other songs.

When a member graduate does mean that she left the group and if it's an important member for the group she will get a graduation concert ( a concert that the member will be the center of each song and it will be the last concert for this member )
