The Future Of Urban Delivery Is Electric Cargo Bikes

- DHL Express, the world's leading international express services provider, is piloting a new City Hub concept that will enable increased use of cargo bicycles for inner-city deliveries. The City Hub is a customized trailer which can carry up to four containers for the DHL Cubicycle, a customized cargo bicycle which can carry a container with a load of up to 125 kg (one cubic meter in volume). A DHL van delivers the trailer into the city center, where the containers can be quickly loaded on to two Cubicyles for last-mile inner-city delivery. It can then be reloaded for outbound shipments. The solution significantly reduces emissions by minimizing the mileage and time spent on the road by standard delivery vehicles. Each City Hub can replace up to two standard delivery vehicles, with an equivalent CO2saving of over sixteen tons per year and a significant reduction in other emissions
And in the UK the Post Office ditched its bikes in favour of small diesel vans for last mile type delivery - amazing foresight there. The bikes haven't gone to waste though - being re-fitted as the latest in practical cycling
Hell yea that sounds like a chill job. Easy to stay in shape!
Exactly. I'd ditch my well-paid office IT job at any time for this. When I think about it, maybe I should create a company that does this. Package delivery has always been a pain whenever I'm waiting for something or sending something.
Phoenix wow you must be a full blown idiot
@@anthonyi220 go watch some documentary about delivery guy of DHL. It's definitely slave job in modern times
@@tictactoe101 slaves never got paid and can never just quit a job if they did not like it. The only people equating this to slave labor are lazy and dumb fucks.
Wow, I'm a truck driver. If I could work for a company that had these. I would quit my job in a heart beat and go work for the company that had these cargo bikes.
You must work for the department of redundancy department...
Be interested to see how it'd handle a 40 footer.......
As soon as these are open for public purchase, best expect a flood of RUclips videos on your feed with the title “My life living in an Electric Cargo Bike”. Not gonna lie... I’d watch them all.
for short run like pizza delivery within 5 miles... yep, those and similar size/power vehicles will be great.
I'd look into putting a weather protection shell on them so your delivery people don't get sick from riding the things in the rain.
F Huber a fairing would also make it more aerodynamic. 😀
They use this here in Frankfurt. Love it! Combined with the new dhl e cars.
Outstanding! I can't wait to see this in my town.
These are common in Beijing. Have been since I first went there in 2010.
Yes, these are common in all China, I cant understand why they talk about future. thats a lie!
@Love All Why are you insulting ?
Might be a while before that concept is acceptable in the U.S. I think its a great idea. Before retirement in early 1990 my department had police officers on bicycles patrolling. Great for stealth and tactical advantage, keeps officers in shape, less money spent on transportation and utilized in other budgetary areas.

Bike cops are nowhere to be seen today.
All cops drive SUV, even on a bike trail today.
I believe that city cars should be just as light and safe for others. 200-400 kg of weight with a battery for 4 passengers, length 2-2.5 m, speed controlled by a lever - 20, 30, 40 km / h, possibly similar to a golf car. Current cars weighing 1.5-2 tons, 4-5 meters long and with a speedometer of 250 km / h are not at all suitable for safe driving around the city.
OTOH, vehicles such as seen in this video, as well as the Dutch bakfiets, are useless when deliveries must be made to customers a hundred km away ... or in very hilly country ... or in sleet and ice. Those are the conditions which prevail in most all of Canada, and where some half the US population lives.
This is a life saver when you need one the most!
Many bicycle courier companies in the states folded when companies like Amazon cut pay for deliveries and companies like eat 24 offered to take over logistics and declared bankruptcy dragging the companies they contracted with down with them.

Just think of how much cheaper the Velove Armadillo could be if it were manufactured here in America, or even Canada.
WTG DHL, maybe being such a big shipping company they can figure out how to sell more of these to the rest of us, larger production runs would lead to lower costs, for everyone.
This has some quite substantial cost savings from taxes, fuel, maintenance. In summer teens could ride those to make them more efficient due to weight reduction. In future, it could be possible to automate it without a rider - just a moving smart-shelf which can be open by phone using NFC.
Other delivery vehicle ideas - the Organic Transit solar/human powered ELF as shown in my avatar. This has been used for light deliveries with zero emissions. And the new Arcimoto high speed electric trike with 2 wheels in front has a cargo version going into production soon as well as a pickup bed version. I placed my deposit a year ago and expect delivery early 2021.
Hold up gents. We're going back to the early days of the automobile.
That's exactly what is going on!!! These are car's, not bicycles!! And therefore have licence plates!!!
I certainly hope so. That"Fossil Fuel" will not last forever. Plan now for the future or pay a price when it is to late and very options.
@@rockerpat1085 This is Europe, where I live anything with a wheelbase of 80cm or less isn't considered a car and is allowed on cycling paths.
well, a soft roof to have better protection against elements would be nice. Especially when riding in more horizontal position like in those bikes.
Deliver post by bicycles for the last kilometers has a long tradition in Germany.

The aluminium forward restraint doesn't look strong enough to prevent the load moving forward and striking the driver in the spine in the event of a head on collision with the rear of another vehicle.
Those are soo cool. I want one and turn it into a camper 👍
В дождь кайф на таком ездить, но наверное лучше, чем идти пешком
It's a very good concept, although I think the vehicles should also provide shelter to the cyclers against the elements, just like a regular van does. It can't be that hard to design a lightweight type of "cab" right? With or without doors. On hot days it could still always be removed.
There is a cap available just look up armadillo
In Boston, there was a story in the Globe about how a single UPS truck got over a thousand tickets in the space of a year.
I have a friend who does inner city catering using a seatpost mounted trailer.
I started my job in a company and I transport stuff from bakeries to hotel on e bike with a cabin behind. 25 km / h is the max speed
Reminds me of the Suburba-car, which blueprints for exist in a mid-60's issue of Popular Mechanics.
Love this concept of this bike.
But it needs a over head fold away rooftop to keep the biker out of the rain .
Rain is not that big of a hassle if you have the right equipment, you can go even with snow. It's actually nice sometimes because it keeps you from overheating
Pay more money to the couriers instead of CEOs. In my town they are under payed and consequently have low motivation.
But I love that everything is done to try and make the delivery better!
Dude, this has 20 years. You can see in big cities that all big companies deliver with electric mini trucks. I've seen that since 1995 in Santiago Chile and it has been since 2000 in Denmark with electric bikes
I need one bike like that !!

Yeah gonna love that job
Are they doing this anywhere in the USA yet?
The cargo box, and the weight, can be lowered at least 6 inches by lowering the rails the boxes sit on. I would not be happy if I had to ride one of these in the rain while being completely exposed. A windshield and roof at least would help a lot and not add more than 5 kilos. Other than those things, it looks great to me. I may buy one and make it into a camper.
I want one, the newest mini house
Yeah same
Exactly, that is the reason i been scanning the web looking for a company who builds 4 wheeled electric assist peddle trucks. And then i seen this but i don't know the company involved in building them yet. This could be easily converted into a electric assist peddle mini motorhome with solar panels, etc...
Just think of how many people wouldn't be homeless if we had these , no license needed, no insurance required, nothing. All those people who knows they will be losing their homes could just buy one for emergency.
I mainly want to do it to get the ideal out there. And to go camping with it. But it could save lives too. I could even use the truck as is for my business.
UPS is soon to start using this type of system on a test scale in Seattle and Portland, using the Truck Trike made by Stites Design in Portland.
Europe is already ready for this. In my country we still fling parcels inside trucks.
I really like this concept. Very flexible for congested areas. I hope they are taking in the fact of more stuff on the vehicle the slower the driver/ rider can move. That big cargo box looks way heavier than Needs to be. I agree with a comment of a cab of clear plastic for inclement weather but removable in better weather. Would be a challenge on windy days. But, a very good concept
i've worked for Deutsche Post for two years but only once drove an electric bike :/ unfortunatly last year the bicycle district even got removed.
Nice. How long are you going to hide that battery production pollutes more than the use of oil?

That have to be for local areas and summer time

Good concept, but I guess they will start blocking cyclying lanes.
Kind of a weird legal position as well. I bet it only has pedals so it counts as a bicycle legally and can drive on its own just fine.
The cargo bikes come under the power cycle laws, here’s an excerpt.
Pedelecs (Pedal Electic Assisted Cycles) or EPACS (Electronic Power Assisted Cycles) are much like bicycles however when pedaling the rider gets progressive assistance from the electric drive system.
There are many different types of electric assisted bike, the most popular and highest selling pedelec is the sub 250 watt pedelec/ sub 25 kmh bike. This lower power vehicle does not have to be type approved like motorised vehicles and is regulated through CEN standards, (with work ongoing to make a global ISO standard), it is seen as essentially a bicycle by all public authorities. These bikes have an assisted motor of up to 250 watts and a speed of 25 kph before the motor cuts out
There are also higher powered pedelecs which are regulated within type approval, even though they are pedal assisted they are viewed as motorised vehicles by the EU authorities, here are the two relevant categories for these vehicles;
L1e-A “powered cycles” - of speeds up to 25 kph and power cut out at 1000 watts
L1e-B for “mopeds” - of speeds up to 45 kph and power up to 4000 watts
The Cargo bikes are generally in the L1e-A category.
I would like to have one of them!
DHL must focus first on its core job by not loosing parcels then market for improvements!
This should be on customer request via mobile app

The bicycle mini micro trucks are a really neat idea and would work good in a dense inner major city' New York 's Manhattan is a prime example residential ,food, retail stores, government business offices ,banking, manufacturing delivery's in heavy traffic, gridlock intersections, frozen zones Perfect! just forget all that pedaling 125 kg 275 .5 up hills lbs No!. However electric motor lithium iodine batteries lightweight gas engine those mini micro trucks and containers you can even use tandem trailers and containers in some areas are a great idea for congested cities all over the world.
how do you stop people from stelling it?
just a thought, isn't it illegal for cycle's to ride on the pavement ???
que padre eso solo ocurre en ciudades civilizadas que respetan al ciclista y al peatón, lamentable mente en mexico jamas pasara eso......
How much does a delivery bike cost? It's interessting for other buisnesses too
If its not mass produced they get really really really expensive. Looking at just the cost pulling carts are made in larger quantities and work with any bike. Even pulling it by hand could make sense in some locations.
Containers should probably be coated with solar panels, especially in more sunny regions.
How it backward mechanism ?
add front cover, they won't last long against rain and snow
Oi boa noite este tipo de carros vende e quando custa
they should have just left it all on the trailer towed by the van and had one person deliver all. this is insane.
How much cycle price
I could do my shopping in that.. and get slightly fitter while doing it.
What about bad weather, injuries, security, road conditions and what will breakdowns cost? Just convert or trade in for electric vehicles instead.
They already have all those liabilities as it is, this will lower them, especially on break downs, road conditions, injuries. Since they are not road trucks they have nothing to do with bad road conditions, they drive around them. Since they are not real trucks the service and maintenance on them is less and cheaper. And since they are not involved in high speeds, and not involved in driving on the highways, they will have less accidents and injuries.
Once everyone is using electric trikes and bikes in the city, there will be no cars running them over because everyone will be on a bike, trike, or quadricycle.
If you are driving a car or truck and you hit a person on a bike, trike, or quadricycle, then you will be charged as running over a pedestrian, and lose your drivers license, be fined around $15. 000, and face possible jail time. They tell you driving is a privilege and they will that that privilege if you drive around running over pedestrians.
Definitely needs a cab!
I’ll take two.
