- “BlacKkKlansman” star Topher Grace sits down with TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie to discuss his controversial role in the Spike Lee film about an African-American detective who goes undercover to infiltrate the Klu Klux Klan. Grace plays David Duke, the Klan’s leader at the center of the investigation. “In this period of time in the 1970s, (Duke) put a new face on racism,” Grace says, adding research for his role was “the worst.”

Terry Shaw It was kinda like Leonardo DiCaprio in "Django Unchained". It's been said that he really struggled with playing the role of "Monsieur Candie".

It was a great movie. Typical Spike lee, flawless character work, flawless camera work, and the way spike managed to make 2 stories mirror each other was awesome

There's much more impact in telling this story from Spike Lee's POV and that of millions of African Americans in this country at the moment.

The black detective didn't go undercover he was simply the leader of the operation. It was Kylo Ren who did the undercover work.

I had to look him up. I was so relieved to see that who he really is, is a complete 180 from who he was playing in that movie. I never watched that 70s show so this was the first time I had seen him. Then I saw him recently on Black Mirror playing another completely different character. haha

This is frustrating to watch. I’ve seen several interviews with Topher Grace promoting this film, and he continues to indirectly apologize for playing the part of David Duke. Are we that naive? Grace doesn’t have to shove it down our throats that it was “depressing” to research Duke. I think it’s implied/understood if you’re portraying the leader of hate group that the research is going to be unnerving and depressing - instead it’s this constant, “oh please feel sorry for me and my family because I was so depressing.” Film is an art form. It’s art. We as the audience are fortunate enough to watch great films and filmmakers show us a powerful message on screen. “Being in his (Duke) head is not a place you wanna be.” Again, we get it. Quit trying to make us feel sorry for you. If anyone thinks portraying David Duke makes Grace a racist is a moron. Spike Lee told a great story and the film was awesome.
You know in Hollywood they like to type cast people. It would be crappy if the only roles he gets are racists people. Hopefully this isn't the case.

The Hashtager aren't we all racist a little bit, I mean Israel is paying refugees to go home so the Jewish nature of its state is not diluted. Duke basically says that hat general homogeneity is a preferred equilibrium just as Muslims worship at a mosque, Christians at a church etc.
I think the bit where he ran an organization that pushed political ideologies to suppress, intimidate, and limit black involvement with a gov't they didn't really have a choice not to be involved in, means he's worse.
Yeah, he prefers an equilibrium of sameness, but its not like we're built on a gov't that allows different classes and races to determine laws for themselves. What Duke is and has done was to attempt to completely eliminate the voices of POCs in the political process of this country.
