- As World Youth Day 2023 kicks off in full swing, more than 200,000 young people have arrived in Lisbon, Portugal. As they desire to draw closer to Jesus through prayer, catechesis, and cultural activities this week, they also anticipate Pope Francis’ arrival to the grand event. Reporting live on-site is EWTN Vatican Bureau Chief, Andreas Thonhauser, who gives us a glimpse into the final preparations that went into the World Youth Day opening. Given the first influx of pilgrims into Lisbon, Andreas shares his estimation of how many pilgrims are expected to be in attendance. Additionally, he describes the current mood in Lisbon and his personal encounters with pilgrims there. Following World Youth Day’s theme, “Mary arose and went with haste” (Lk 1:39), Andreas emphasizes the anticipation in the hearts of the pilgrims as they eagerly count down to the arrival of the Holy Father.
