I agree. Eye contact is very important. I love it when I look at a guitarist or a keyboard player or especially a bass player and I get a nod of acknowledgment. No they haven’t forgotten about me and they do appreciate what I’m doing👍🏻😂
I always said after most every gig I ever played: “I hope y'all also enjoyed the show... but the best seat in the house is up here on stage” Watching my bandmates making beautiful noise... and digging on the crowd grooving to our spontaneous syncopated tapestry of sound - that was always my greatest joy...
Are you saying you don’t know what to play so you look at others to magically know what to play? If you’ve been practicing, and playing to a metronome live, why do you need eye contact? The song goes how the song goes. Practice it….
Very important. Playing in a band is a very involved and emotional ride , you can't be off in space, disassociating. Playing together paying attention is key.
It’s usually the singer or the lead guitarist who’s leading the signals for each song and progression through each concert. There was only one time when I’ve known a bass player that lead the band around
They don't look at each other because they have been raised with their faces in screens : computers, smart phones , and video games. Technology is creating generations of people who can't interact face to face.a
It's even more obvious when say a guitarist has to accompany a singer. They HAVE to look at eachother..make a "circle" and be aware of the musical timing, frases and all litle nuances in following eachother. That shows a visual and sound musical unity while performing!
You need to see BAND-MAID perform. Look for the live videos of HATE!, DONT’T YOU TELL ME, DOMINATION, or FREEDOM to see their great chemistry and lively interaction.
This is what people don’t understand and I deal with these kinds of people a lot it’s not always about you nobody cares about you they care about the music and how it’s gonna serve their ears
Rock has moved across the Pacific. Japan currently has the best rock and metal musicians. If you don’t believe me here are bands to check out: Lovebites-speed metal BAND-MAID- rock Nemophila-rock, metal Each is all female with musicianship that buries any western band.
The number of band members that want to strangle each other is amazing. The idea that there is this affection is nonsense. When groups split-up , it's usually to avoid a homicide.
💯💯💯💯 I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO SEE my "band" Simon Phillips is ONE OF THE BEST EVER. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIS WORK with DEREK SHERRINIAN & I'll tell you EXACTLY why..... HE PLAYS FOR THE SONG. i kno he has INCREDIBLE CHOPS, but being a GOOD DRUMMER doesnt mean playing EVERYTHING YOU KNO IN EVERY SONG. A TRU professional Simon IS one of the VERY BEST
The fretboard is not going to move, now, do you know your fretboard and trust your hearing enough to actually enjoy the performance? Playing a wrong note is nothing against playing without involving the rest of the band oe the public.
Why on earth would I need eye contact when there’s a metronome and a preplanned song where we’ve practice every note? Like what am I looking at you for?… there’s no special solo, nothing that isn’t recorded already on the track.
I don't need to see them, I need to hear them. I'm the one odd drummer on the entire planet who values monitoring over eye contact. I only need eye contact to make sure somebody isn't distracted or preoccupied when it's my job to count in the next song. Of course Simon Phillips can take proper monitoring for granted, the same way he takes a keyboardist like Chick Corea for granted.
@@gmc1966 It's the reason why I quit playing out 10 years ago. If I'm going to be sitting inside my drum kit unable to hear anything but my drums, I can stay home and do that. So I woodshed at home every day now. If I ever decide I want a band I can get play-along tracks and mix them in-ear to my satisfaction without having to argue with a whole crew of angry people over it.
@onemoremisfit I played a show last weekend and the monitoring was horrible. It was a shitshow, couldn't hear anything but guitar .couldn't hear myself or any vocals etc. I begged the SE to fix it but it never happened. It's understandable how frustrated u were I'm in the same boat.
And never put your hand over your eyes, because all your audience communication gestures goes out the window once you communicate you can’t really see them.?????
Some one has an interest in the Templars & L. da Vinci, Masonry & ancient mystery schools perhaps...or maybe just likes wearing cool tee-shirts, possibly?..I'll probably spark-off lots of vitriol with those comments...Not saying that he's not a great percussionist though.
Simon's _write_ Conducting and certainly being conducted can lead us to something special. The band members' individual [emotional] well-being 🫣🙏📸🔬 may need statistical analysis and secure station-nooks ...for artists', friends, and people around the world. Virtuous cat bird seat observing for potential and creativity improv and potential theatrics? I dunno.
I’ve seen so many bangs that are locked in and not looking at each other once and improvising. It’s about sound and “listening” to the other musicians not looking at them. I don’t who he is or what he’s done; he’s just really interested in what he has to say. Flap flap flap opinion opinion opinion.
Band interaction is so important not only to the band but to the show.
I agree. Eye contact is very important. I love it when I look at a guitarist or a keyboard player or especially a bass player and I get a nod of acknowledgment. No they haven’t forgotten about me and they do appreciate what I’m doing👍🏻😂
Yeah,
Lol,u don't even jam smh

Yep. I was always watching the other guys in the band and connecting with them and Vibing with them.
Bingo! Thank you. This is how I want it too. The right people are hard to find….
Are you saying you don’t know what to play so you look at others to magically know what to play? If you’ve been practicing, and playing to a metronome live, why do you need eye contact? The song goes how the song goes. Practice it….
Such a master
Not just one of the best drummer, musician, on of the best and sooo nice Man!😊😊😊
I saw you years ago at the NAMM Show in Chicago. I was a fan already since you had played on Judas Priest Lps. Glad to see you are still playing.
Oh yeah I did have a crush on you to!
Oh you are SOOOOOO right Simon 👏🏽👏🏽
I love Simon he’s just a master
One of Britain's Finest Drummers for decades!
Hes world class Fer sure
As a bass player, I used to play with my band and ALWAYS was watching to see what everyone was doing. I cant imagine NOT doing that on stage.
Very important. Playing in a band is a very involved and emotional ride , you can't be off in space, disassociating. Playing together paying attention is key.
Santana's band is the same way. They are so intuned with each other watching each other, their timing was amazing, I saw them 7 times in NY
We always watch other. Totally agree.
The 1st time I saw Simon Phillips play was in 1981. He was 19-years-old, playing with Jeff Beck on the "There And Back Tour." Whoa!
It’s usually the singer or the lead guitarist who’s leading the signals for each song and progression through each concert. There was only one time when I’ve known a bass player that lead the band around

His work with Townshed and the ARMS concert was great
According to Jimi Hendrix communication is the second most important thing to have as a musician.
Chick Corea looking at you LISTENING intently
It's even more obvious when say a guitarist has to accompany a singer. They HAVE to look at eachother..make a "circle" and be aware of the musical timing, frases and all litle nuances in following eachother. That shows a visual and sound musical unity while performing!
Nice,real guy.
Love Simon. What a phenomenal musician/engineer. Huge inspiration. If Ian Paice retires, Simon would be a great fit for Deep Purple
You need to see BAND-MAID perform. Look for the live videos of HATE!, DONT’T YOU TELL ME, DOMINATION, or FREEDOM to see their great chemistry and lively interaction.
Amazing playing on Jon Anderson's Animation album. 🎉
I've heard Simon Phillips on so much Pete Townsend but this is my first time seeing him.
We look at one another alot
visual connection 👍
Protocol 4 with Greg Howe was excellent.
Biggest problem in every band I was in.
i am a drummer and i admire Simon Phillips but i don´t imagine my favorite thrash metal bands looking at the audience without headbanging :D
I played drums in bands for years and was the same way!
Watch The Warning ⚡⚡⚡
Those three sisters are telepathic and always watching each other.
🤘😎👍
I got to see simon phillips on the who's first tour without keith moon and it was pretty damn awesome
Hell yeah!
he is right we not play with recorded backsound/playback, we play with our human friend we need to adjust our self with them and having fun
I often wonder what the guitarists think as I often stare at them and their fretboards 😅
Hero 🙌💪👍
Agree. Musicians must listen to and support, and make other player sound good.
Max Weinberg is a good example. He always follows Bruce, because he needs to anticipate on the next move of Bruce.
I love eye contact
Simon, why is visual contact so important if not such an integral part of the dynamics?
I agreebbut sometimes your just into it
This is what people don’t understand and I deal with these kinds of people a lot it’s not always about you nobody cares about you they care about the music and how it’s gonna serve their ears

Simon is a guy who I would like to take out for a drink to say thanks for the supreme music he has given up.
Simon Phillips drummed on the seldom mentioned Judas Priest album "Sin After Sin."
wait till you see Robert Fripp death stare
Yeah man... Return to Forever...
Real
I agree.
Simon can you see me?
Can you feel me near you??
Yes please!😅
The number of band members that want to strangle each other is amazing. The idea that there is this affection is nonsense. When groups split-up , it's usually to avoid a homicide.
Did you ever see James Burton look at the singer Bob ,Ricky,Elvis,Frank,John ect.he plays to them I guess that's why they like him.
with MSG....... really good !!!
Simon 🥁 was Great on the Song "Give Blood" It made him a ⭐ Touring with The Who 🇬🇧 & Pete Townsend also Helped!
Preach preach preach. It's absolutely infuriating. Just because I have a TalkBack doesn't mean I should need it.
Look at the rolling stones contact ❤
One reason for this behavior are in-ears, they turn some musicians into introverts.
That should be rule #1: You are not the Star (even if you are)! Be a team player!

Interactions dont require goofy eye contact
im a solo performer who uses a mirror when im.playing..😮
I think band uniforms are more important 😂
Yes, it also shows the Joyful Commitment 🎉.🎶🎵
We are separate who trying to become one entity, so this man is a national icon. Protect him at all costs
💯💯💯💯

Cell phones have caused a lot of non interaction with people

RIP CHICK.

Exactly Sensei Master 🙏🏻🥷

Proper monitoring is everything in live sound, its a disaster when it aint right

801 Live is a good Simon LP
❤❤❤❤❤

Drumming 101..
The difference between a pro musician and an amateur.
Never heard of him.

Never heard of this guy
100% agrew
They are not having fun together playing music.
Simon is lonely. Need a hug. Ha ha.
Dude
When u are playing bore ass music like yours there is time to see each other man but not when you are playing death core !
When it came to interacting bands gotta talk THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN
If you didn’t make eye contact with each other in my band we got rid of you. It’s crucial to keep eyes on each other when going in and out.
