this is a symptom of our modern culture and how it is failing to fulfil us and make us whole people. Yes it does matter how other people perceive and what they think about you, you should definitely not strive to have what matters to you be only what you think of yourself, that is solipsistic garbage, that way leads to a life devoid of compassion and bereft of healthy relationships. It absolutely matters what others think of you, treating others the way you would like to be treated means that you put others first and many if not most situations so that they may do the same. I am not saying do not care about yourself or find solace and strength in your personal composition and meditation yes you must do that but we also must live for each other. Discard the insensitive and hostile reactions and the adversity of fools but what you think of yourself must be composed in part by the way others think of you. If people think you are self-centered, conceited and aggressive than chances are you are self-centered, conceited and aggressive and you should absolutely listen and take stock of what others think of you so that you may change and have a more healthy and complete opinion of yourself.
