I put my foot down and no more games until I have made serious dents in my backlog. On Steam, no more Steam games until I have completed 100 games from my backlog and it's actually helped me enjoy the games I have purchased over the years.
You struck a chord with me, my guy. This new way of thinking is exactly what I have been needing in my life. I'm going to start my day one today!
The is the Day One Release we all needed I believe
I used the Steam deck to reset my backlog, there was a time in my early 20s when I had a running list of all the games that I needed to play, and as a result the games just became homework. I have a list of 3 games that I plan to work through over the next year (planning on playing through the Kingdom Heart series). I will pick up a few of my old favorites on Steam sales but I needed a big reset and not having access to a game pass and taking a LONG break from Bethesda RPGs, as really helped me enjoy my gaming more.
I think a lot of us needed to reset after these past few years of gaming
Your mistake was playing Bethesda's RPGs, Morrowind and Maaaaybe Oblivion and Fallout 3 were last good RPGs from Bethesda
Anyway jokes aside, hope you're doing well with your backlog
I just found your channel yesterday and I gotta say bro keep it up, your content is amazing and relatable, I pray God blesses you and your family.
My huge backlog stresses me out and makes it hard for me to pick up any game. i like to complete my games and so i get analysis paralysis
“Who gives a Master Splinter butt?” 😂😂😂 totally stealing that
hahaha
I share a very similar mindset towards the Switch and Nintendo in general. My Switch can go with me and play what’s on it no problem. No need to be online to verify ownership of the game. Great battery life where I can go without a charger. Like you mentioned the games are just fun to play. I always gravitate back to my Switch after a bit. I’m really looking forward to the next version of it.
Lol my backlog is huge but I don't see it as a problem I love it. I have a folder on my steam deck with about 250 games in it called "play next" and i just use a random number generator to pick one and then play it until I finish it or until I deem it not worth finishing.
I’m disciplined enough to buy a game thinking how cool it will be to play it, keep it wrapped and immediately started thinking on the next one 😅
I used to be all about tackling the backlog until I started getting burned out on the games I was playing. Now I just play until I feel I've gotten what I wanted out of it or have decided I'm into or not into it and then move on. I finish about 20% of the games I play these days. The ones I finish are the ones I actually live
I've done something similar.
I have become infatuated with Metroidvanias, so I'm just playing those kinds of games. As a result I'm getting better at those kinds of games and even finding that I'm good at the genre itself.
Interesting to listen to. The guilt isn't really the problem I have, (if I don't enjoy something I bought or received have no problem dropping it, for example). I do still have this desire to want to play so many games, because there are so many things I want to enjoy. I really like round-robin type approaches to sample and try out a lot of things. Like, rotating by system every day or something. Yet, when I reflect back on games I've enjoyed the most and formed the strongest memories of, it's usually ones that I played with focus (It was mainly all I was playing. I was always looking forward to free time to continue). However, I still find the idea of dedicating time slices to various things appealing. I like rhythm games, and that ones I enjoy are basically endless (which is great), so I find myself tempted to schedule in a day of the week for one. And then for the others, and then for some game I wanted to play again, and then for some long story focused thing I want to see through for the first time. There are no wrong choices, and yet, making a choice is so difficult somehow and I've oversubscribed my time.
In trying to design various 'systems' to make the choices a bit more automatic, I fall into spending too much time trying to prepare/nest/plan. I do similar things with physical organization of my environment. This is where some of the points in your video do become relevant. When you talk about not worrying about playing the 'best' version, and just playing. You have to be able to switch out of plan/prep mode and into relax/enjoy mode. Which is usually the problem. I don't have guilt for the things I bought but haven't played yet, I have guilt about allowing myself to relax/enjoy - because I feel like I should be 'doing' something. Even if that something is just trying to architect 'the perfect system for my free time'. Ways to combat the (very real) analysis paralysis are good and all (and sometimes fun to do themselves), but they're just distracting me from the actual fun I could be having most of the time. There's no reason to do that (at least not as much as I do). My environment doesn't have to be perfect first, nor does my decision about what to play. Just play.
I completely agree eliminating choice helps to keep us feeling fulfilled in our entertainment. We spend less time wondering if there’s something better to play and it allows us to focus on what we have.
I’ve sold my switch and series S. Now I’m down to just my PS5 and steamdeck. I’m considering selling my PS5 and going just full-on steamdeck.
While I can’t say I’m happy you’re going back to focusing on Nintendo, I still wish you the best, brother. Keep doing your thing.
Thank you and I agree, my version of zero day is this. It is ok to play a game for at least two hours and say "This game is not for me." or "I like this game but it is not what I want now I will come back to it" and then keep doing that until I find something that I do find fun now
Im a nintendo and pc guy. I have spells where i want to get nintendo vibes and i have times i want ghost of tsushima and other more serious games. Theres many light hearted titles on pc as well. I love both scenes. No need to stop either one
I don’t know how it’s possible to sync so much without even being on same situation. I am back to switch like you, I played xenoblade chronicles I didn’t care about frame rate or resolution, I just enjoyed the game
next week hes gonna sell his switch and get a ps5... lol great vid dude
Hahah wouldn’t that be a thing
I’m not that worried about my backlog, and I have a backlog. If I were then I might think that I should be serving my games. If I buy a game and don’t play it for a long time, my son might play it or I have access to it when I want, no rush. Games should serve me, not the other way around.
I sold my switch a while back, but if the next one is backward compatable i will be picking it up with a plethora of previous games on it to play i hope. Great vid, love how your including us in your gaming journey. You chop and change but thats what we all do, grappling with the burden of almost infinite choices lol
Just want to thank you for your content Julian.. it’s strange how apart from being a father which I’m not, with gaming I’m going through this exact same phase at 32 with the recently purchased steam deck and every other console.. it’s like your guiding us through this change 😂 amazing channel. No one is doing what you’re doing keep it up 👌I also grew up on Nintendo, it’s maybe just time to accept who we are 😂.. kind of Eerie
Love your channel. Ran over and followed you on twitch. I’m 61 year old gamer. I’ve got several games going I’ve not finished. It bothers me because I’ve not finished them. But in saying that I play what I feel like playing. I’ve been going back and playing them. Working on finishing them. Most are close to being finished. Actually one I’m at the final boss. But at the end is to just have fun!
Im adding more games to backlog right now 😂 got my moms super nintendo working, it hasnt been used in about 20 years. Right now Im playing donkey kong country and buying link to the past for it.
I agree 100% with your opinions. Can't wait for the Nintendo Direct this month!! You gonna live stream it?
Next time in Julien’s world: I found love for gaming again in my backlog!! *comment left with love I’m here for it 😂
Damn what a fantastic video and topic. this was recommended to me by a friend and it was a great recommendation! I actually had my day one recently (though i never thought of it that way until this video). I'm currently buying a house and since, I have just been playing what makes me happy. Not beating anything at all... Just playing my favorites and slowly chipping away at a few others. currently playing Dragon Warrior IV, one of my favorite games of all time. I'll play more... and get through more. When i feel like it.
A lot of the “I gotta finish XYZ” mentality (for me) comes from wanting to experience what everyone else has deemed a “phenomenal” game/story.
I have my main franchises that I love that I’ll play no matter what, but when I’m in a dry spell, I tend to seek out what others have said is going to be worth my time- so to speak.
I’ve been let down by this approach quite a few times. Maybe something is overhyped, maybe I have high expectations going in…whatever the case.
For me at this point, it’s like a few major games release every year that I HAVE to play (Zelda, FF rebirth) but barring those, I tend to fill my time with older stuff that I enjoy.
Awesome video Julian loved it 🙌🏽
And just wanna add I’m putting my backlog games on easy to get though them faster 😆
I could NOT buy anything for at least 2 years! But… I too told myself that it okay to delete unfinished games and FORGET them. I took whichever fun and experience I wanted from them. I can move on.
I am also a dad with way much less time than before. I love being a dad and am fully invested in my son and family life.
Between modern ps5, switch, pc, emulation titles I think I could get through them in a few years if I did nothing else. But I don’t feel pressure to beat anything. I don’t have that kind of time, so I spend it with my favorites. Certain games I love can’t be necessarily be beaten but your skills can be honed further, for me that game is gran turismo 7. Still, I want to experience some new stuff and support the studios who make them so we can get more cool stuff.
Definitely have at least 4 years worth 😂. Thats if I played religiously too.
Man, I feel this hard but in the fliped way. Im enjoying the stem deck so much it made me realize its time to sell the nintendo,ps5 and go to the PC steam deck combo. Min max my enjoyment of gaming! Great video
September 2023 is the time I hit a big reset, when I sold my PS4 with all games, and got Series S instead. Starting fresh, with no games on this platform I got excited. I was playing some games from game pass and it was great. I also purchased dev mode to play PS2 games because of nostalgia, and Im glad to have this option. I love this console but... I already purchased 43 games so far and from these, I did not finish single one. But two of them were a big disappointment for me, so I created a group of dropped games and put them there.
But I did finish 3 games from game pass so far, so I guess its something.
I have been thinking about this topic alot, and I did create a lot of groups for my games. The big chunk of it is a month and year when I bought the game, so I can see how long its sitting there in my collection. And then I created 3 groups of games based on my priority. They are Top Priority Playlist, Secondary Playlist and Casual Playlist. I did put some actual games Im playing now into them and I do treat them as a queue of games. I do play only 2 first listed games in specific group, so thats 6 games total, and once I finish one, I will remove it and put it inside "Completed in this year" group. Then, next game takes its place. It kind of helps me and motivates me when I can see what games are coming up in the queue.
So far, it somehow works for me... But I will probably never get rid of that temptation of buying new games on sale. Maybe once I get a new priority in my life.
And actualy... There is still my Switch with the same problem and many games.
I would bring In the money = time aspect. When I buy a game for example for 10 bucks I commit at least 1 hour of gaming time to it. If for whatever reason I don't end up liking this game after that time I never look back to it and move on to the next game... 😅 That helps me with my backlog
That is what steam refunds are for! Haha.
That’s a good take though. The value proposition of a game is an interesting idea. The flip side of that for me is that I actually LIKE shorter games and wish most would cap out at about 25 hours.
@@gmoney0987 totally agree 20ish hours is my sweet spot. I'm also more of a fan of linear games then open world. Makes me feel kinda lost in there just completing tasks by running back and forth.
Its like whats more valuable, my time or my money. If theres a game a have that i sort of want to play but theres a game i dont have that i super want to play then i may buy the new one. So i enjoy my short gaming time as much as possible.
ignoring my backlog allowed me to become overwhelmed. Now, i look at it and say i will NOT move onto the next game until i finish this one. the only exception is if the game is absolute dog water. but so far, i am beating outer wilds, next is windwaker, then the second half of cyberpunk. i am doing GREAT sticking to that way of living. None of the new games get my attention so that also helps.
Totally relate to this... been saying for a couple years now I don't need another game for 2+ more years and would be just fine. It comes down to self-control and my love for games, to experience all types of games, and good ones, across all platforms...this after being away from gaming for about 15 years... picked it up again beginning of 2016.
I easily have at least one year's worth of video games just based off hour counts alone. One franchise alone makes up just over 1/8th of a year in terms of hours, so the initial estimate I had given might be significantly understated. I view my collection of games as a backlog, regardless of the term I still acknowledge they must be played and if not they get sold off.
For me its "I need to experience X game or franchise", I've only ever dropped one game and it was annoying since I had 35hrs of investment at the time of quitting.
Personally I’ve never experienced a “personal responsibility” to play any game 😂
Anyine know what the tracks in the background are? They arent cited in the video's description.
And get this… Xbox will announce a switch like device on Sunday. Mark my words. It just makes sense
What for. The ally and legion go can already do it better
@@jdxcoffee I’m already invested in the Xbox environment. I use remote play with my phone at work. But I would definitely like to have my “Xbox” with me at all times.
I dislike the switch. Nintendo games are basic for me, but glad you found some fun in it.
Clearly, you’ve never played a Zelda game. {TOO} “basic” ???
🙄
@@gmoney0987 I have. played a ton of them. only time I pick up the device. Wasn't a diss, just not my cup of tea... or coffee for this curator
Hooray the smoke cup returns.
indeed
Lol 1 year? I've got enough in the backlog for the next 10 years
Day 1 for me. Right now. You made a lot of sesnse today.
first time I am awake when your video dropped
6:30 I guess Amber is just the color of your energy 🤷♂️
gosh dang it!!
my problem is i keep jumping from game to game and cant even get to the finish
I don't have enough life to play all my games in my library
Nice points, however, I disagree. That mentality just doesn’t work for a type a personality like mine.
im currently selling my ps5 and all my ps4/ps5 games and using the funds to get some super nintendo games for my collection. definetly not getting complete in box games since they are more expensive so loose cartridge is the way to go.
I have a backlog that goes back 20yrs.😫😫😫😫😫😫
Hey man I understand where you are coming from I have a PC with a 3080 that I can play any game in 3440 x 1440p with high to ultra settings and I can say I probably will never buy another PlayStation but I will always own a Nintendo console it’s just something about their games that brings out my inner child
I have games to play my entire life 😂
I don't play ps4 anymore and it hurts me so much everytime i look at it and the games in the shelve, "just unplug it" does not work for me I have to sell it to not feel guilty anymore.
I'm sticking with the Steamdeck only, Steam is King for me. But also sticking with the channel, came here for the steamdeck and stayed for the personality. This channel is Julien
I got to the ganandorf fight in totk and told myself I’m not ready. Then I popped in xenoblade chronicles 1 and put a few hours while I intend to play them all lol I also really wanna play silent hill 4 and etc it never ends
I've got games to play but lately I've been playing starfield on the xbox Minecraft on my phone and persona 3 golden on the vita when I don't want to play one I stop and play something else but don't feel the need to carry on with something if I'm not enjoying it. I might come back to a game at another time if not it's fine in 15 years I retire and will have lots of time to work through a backlog
this guy talks like he’s preaching the word of god, chill brother it’s video games 😂
That would be capital G
Don't get that vibe at all lol 😂 kinda more like a salesman.
I think what he was trying to say is “how you play video games is how you do everything”
For my birthday I get to choose a game . Either Mario rpg or thousand year old door . Which would you recommend?
Thousand year door for me. I loved rpg though
thanks!
the same happened to me last month. sold my deck, even tho i had many games, just bought Balatro again on the switch.
I need a reset
I love this
I havent bought a newer video game since 🤔 horizon forbidden west .... Now im buying if im even buying is ps3 used games. I dont like where modern gaming has gone. Im out. Im going backwards.
Limiting your coverage cripples your reach.
narrowing my focus deepens my connection
I could never sell my PS5, Spiderman 2 has my attention and that's the only game I am buying this year. My Series S, my nephew has it and I dont miss it. Never played it since 2022 and he gets more used out of it cause Game Pass and his friends online. I think with my PS4 backlog it does sorta create a what to play situation but its great going back to games that I started 10 uears ago.
you got to support Steam somehow!
