The only school trip I remember was Lullingstone Roman Villa, which was a new fancy greenhouse-like structure with walkways above the open archaeological dig site so we could see the mosaics and the structure of rooms and some bits of wall paintings that added to the designs in the mosaic floors. Some bits of the hypocaust that had provided underfloor heating when it was working (which I expect it often wasn't, and needed expensive repairs every few years to stop the smoke and steam rotting the mortar for the mosaic floors and collapsing them), because of course they needed heating to live in Britannia province. They weren't going to live in the windowless thatched hovels the natives used to keep out the cold.
Bogs preserve organic matter better than any other natural environment because the still water has almost no oxygen in it. Nothing lives in the water, so nothing decomposes much either. So as long as you keep the water out, butter should keep. You've got to preserve seasonal excess somehow. Ireland is still famous for beef and dairy because of the juicy grass all that rain produces.
