Pink has been singing this and other Joplin ballads since her childhood. Kris Kristofferson wrote this song inspired by the hobo girl in the classic Fellini film "La Strada" (1954). It was of course made famous after Janis Joplin covered it a few years later. After hearing Joplin's cover, Kristofferson wanted to meet her, but Joplin lived her life in the fast lane without professional filter, so she (accidentally) 'checked out', before that happened.
