Pope tells Americans to vote for the ‘lesser of two evils’ | LBC reaction

- As the Pope criticises Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Carol Vorderman hears from Republican strategist Amy Tarkanian (00:00) and LBC caller Simon (06:21).
Pope Francis XI has told voting Catholics to choose the "lesser evil". Speaking on the upcoming race to the White House, the religious leader took aim at Trump and Harris for what he called anti-life policies on abortion and migration.
"Both are against life, be it the one who kicks out migrants or the one who (supports) killing babies," Francis said. "Both are against life," the Pope said during an airborne press conference.
The Argentine Jesuit was asked to provide counsel to American Catholic mid-air on his return trip to Rome, telling US voters it is their civic duty to vote.
It follows the religious leader's four-nation tour through Asia.
"One should vote, and choose the lesser evil," he said. "Who is the lesser evil, the woman or man? I don't know."
Stressing that he was not an American and therefore would not be voting himself, Francis
Neither the Republican candidate Donald Trump nor the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris was mentioned by name.
But Francis nevertheless expressed himself in stark terms when asked to weigh in on their positions on two hot-button issues in the US election - abortion and migration - that are also of major concern to the Catholic Church.
Francis has made the plight of migrants a priority of his pontificate and speaks out emphatically and frequently about it.
While strongly upholding church teaching forbidding abortion, Francis hasn't emphasised church doctrine as much as his predecessors.
He said migration is a right described in Scripture, and that anyone who does not follow the Biblical call to welcome the stranger is committing a "grave sin".
He was also blunt in speaking about abortion.
"To have an abortion is to kill a human being. You may like the word or not, but it's killing," he said. "We have to see this clearly."
Asked though what to do at the polls, Francis recalled the civic duty to vote.
"Everyone in their conscience should think and do it," he said.
It is not the first time Francis has weighed in on a US election. In the run-up to the 2016 election, Francis was asked about Mr Trump's plan to build a wall at the US-Mexican border. He declared then that anyone who builds a wall to keep out migrants "is not Christian".
In responding on Friday, Francis recalled that he celebrated Mass at the US-Mexico border and "there were so many shoes of the migrants who ended up badly there".
The US bishops conference, for its part, has called abortion the "preeminent priority" for American Catholics in its published voter advice.
Ms Harris has strongly defended abortion rights.

She seems to be saying that it is completely acceptable that women are treated as second class citizens by religions and they should just put up with it.

I was raised a Catholic and was one until I was 13 and nearly every moment of it there was some message about social justice. I had exactly one class about abortion, and even that was against criminalizing poverty abortions. US catholics are crazy.
I wonder if that woman would have the same opinion if Francis was agreeing with her side.
Religion should have NOTHING to do with politics.

I agree that religion shouldn't be a factor in politics however that doesn't mean the religious can't have an opinion on politics.
I will never get over the irony of the country that thinks it invented freedom and screams and shouts about free speech more than any other country on earth, so often is the one who wants to take away people's freedom of speech.
While I was never that religious to begin with but I completely became an atheist after I started paying attention politics and listening to the "christian right " in the US for few years.

I'm Catholic, but I don't think the Pope should interfere in the politics of the US. He disagrees with both candidates. Had he slammed Trump for attempting to remove the rights of women over their own bodies, I wouldn't mind.
The pope CAN'T interfere in US politics, he's not American. He can have an opinion and American Catholics may follow his opinion but that's their choice. The pope can't legislate to the USA just like the US can't legislate to the Papacy.

In fairness, he is following a tradition which is over 1000 years old. We fought wars and slaughtered each other for almost the last 500 years over essentially the Pope's decision not to grant an annulment to Henry VIII's marriage. Giving a vague opinion on a political matter is nothing on the history of papal interference in politics

@@Priyanka.Aarya77 I think it was not talking about both sides as a whole but rather at policy that goes against life. It is best to look up the whole thing from the source and not a report. The pope often gets misquoted. But in short if you genuinely believe that an unborn child has equal right to life and is a seperate person from day one then thats fine. But other comments from the pope on this issue have also stated that a mother's life comes first. So honestly being pro life means you dont have mothers dying because they miscarried etc. And you dont put her life at risk through pregnancy. But it is still sad even if nobody is to blame. Banning abortion is not the way. Education and access to contraception (preconception) and available affordable healthcare is the way forward. And if anyone starts attacking a woman for the choice she had to make then they have missed the whole mercy, compassion, no judging and love and kindness part that is the sole focus of the Gospel. So the evil here is that children might die. But whats worse is them dying anyway with their mothers AND Trump's xenophobia. Dehumanizing non rich/non whites.
@@Pennywise.18 Freedom of speech means people can have any view or religion they want and can talk about it whenever they want. Be it secular, Christian Muslim or anything. People can comment and hold views on whatever. You can disagree all you want and that is your right. But you can't expect or command people to shut up.

Seems Amy needs to brush up on the teachings of the Bible.... Asking people to choose the option that would most align with God's vision for the earth and the people within should not be a controversial stance. It's analogous to Justin Welby using his platform in the Lords proclaiming that the Rwanda scheme was callous and should be voted against.

I'm an atheist who considers what Justin Welby and Pope Francis say on current matters. When Francis observed that many Americans have replaced faith with ideology, that was a salient point for 1.5 billion followers worldwide. Americans who tell the pontiff to mind his knitting could be more cultish than devout.

@@blondpanda6211 that is your choice. I'm in UK and would have to live with the global outcome. I just hope there is no insurrection which I feel is the biggest fear with certain platforming already being witnessed. No candidate is ever perfect and they will always have to work across the floor.

Not only are in the US giant political voter blocks organized around their respective religious beliefs, they even go as far as running PACs to promote their political agenda, which makes it completely legitimate for religious leaders like the pope to weigh in on what their flock are pursuing in the name of their faith. Also: why should there be a ban on religion influencing politics? That’s exactly what religion is for! Secularism doesn’t mean: keep religion out of politics, but out of state functions. Those are two very different things…

There’s also just a long standing Catholic theological objection. The restoration of Israel is the opening of Gods covenant to the gentiles in the Gospel according our theology so we are the new Israel, or God’s “chosen people”. Some colonial project in the Middle East with absolutely no divine authority falls under the churches general judgement on colonialism, which since the 1960s has been pretty unfavourable.
Politics effects us all and we pay for the political systems so yes we should be able to say what we like

You are hypocrites! The Pope is being honest as a human being! He was asked a question like any other human being! He has the right and freedom to answer and give his opinion! He is human! Respect anyone who is entitled to his own opinion! Nobody in this podcast understood the meaning of evil! If you honestly know it’s meaning then you do not need to be defensive, but you would know between Kamala and Trump who the lesser evil is! For once in your life, listen to your conscience and you know the choice!
That is not an argument. It is just nonsense to prohibit any high position leader to talk about what affects every citizen in the world, politics economics etc.. All of them should talk. In fact that will be very interesting and educational to heard what the King have to said about those subjects.
