In this tutorial you're going to learn the fundamentals of creating interesting melodies. We'll start from going over the basics of harmony (for both melodies and chords), and we'll analyze the chord progression in our track. After introducing the concept of tension notes, we'll use it to create three types of melodies (in 3 levels) - from basic, through more advanced patterns, all the way to syncopated rhythmic melodies in the Lydian mode. Let's get started!
0:00 - 1:50 Introduction
1:50 - 6:00 Basics of harmony
6:00 - 8:52 Analysing the chords
8:52 - 10:00 Tension notes
10:00 - 13:00 Level 1
13:00 - 15:50 Level 2
15:50 - 20:04 Level 3

This is the only tip you need: if it sounds good, it is good.
There have been plenty of pros who’ve used simple midi patterns before. It doesn’t matter how complex it looks; it matters how good it sounds.
But knowing some basic theory etc. helps you achieve that good sound faster. Ill much rather do a good sounding melody in minutes than spend an hour trying to figure out a good melody. If you know the theory behind good melodies, you can make them much easier/faster.
@@Ex0rz yes but complexity does not equate to something sounding good.
@@eriklucasmusic Whose talking about complexity anyway? Neither does simple equate to something sounding good. Ill rather learn how to make more complex melodies, since i have way more options with complex melodies than i do with simple melodies.
@@Ex0rz literally look at the thumbnail of this video
@@Ex0rz also, I’m not advocating for simplicity. I’m warning against over-complexity. Furthermore, the thumbnail in this video suggest that it’s ‘beginner’ and less advanced to use simple midi patterns, which just isn’t the case.
Very interesting, but I had trouble to not fall asleep with your soothing voice
hahahhahaha I almost fell a sleep with his ASMR voice 😂😂😂😂
This was amazing thank you!
This is really useful.
Thanks, you explain this very well
By using an F#, you just make the root key a G major. Which is the root chord of those playing in the background.
nice
useful
I'm impressed !
can someone explain that 18.17 he changing piano to synth but i couldnt get it how he did that and piano sound is changed so well?
I know this is 3 months late, but he's using an instrument rack. You're able to put multiple instruments in the same rack. He then switches between instruments in the rack.
Raag Yaman!!

option for chords are just in ableton 11 or 10 have it too ?
just in 11, I know I have to upgrade too :(
you can do them in any daw lol
❤
These aren't melodies, they're ostinatos. There's no phrase. Phrases are like the most fundamental thing about melody.
Almost all the greatest melodies are written as a strong idea standalone, not just picking notes out of a chord sequence.
There's a reason top-line writer is dedicated job in the pop world.
Generally, chords support the melody, not the other way round. Not all music needs to be melodic, but I feel a click bait "pro melody" thumbnail needs calling out to avoid misleading beginners.
thank you
I agree with you, however, maybe your standards for this video were too high. In the intro Boris states that the concepts and execution are meant for "Getting started with making melodies" in Ableton..
@@BigKaTrob my standards are fairly low on youtube generally. My main gripe is calling any of this "pro" melody writing.
He may well be a pro youtuber, but definitely not a pro musician or music educator.
I don't have much empathy for youtubers making "content"/clickbait that presents itself as pro/expert knowledge.
Can you please point me to a tutorial which explains this correctly - along the lines of what you've just described?
Diamond blocks
???????
ben bohmerish i like it. teach me daddy
Nothing was a melody, everything were chord arpegios, a melody Is much complex than just put arpegios, even if you do level 1 a melody Is'nt an arpegio.
So hard to understand
Meh
Arpegio is not melody🙈🙉🙊🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶🤡
why the hell not just count the open steps? :)) 3/2 vs 2/3 u have to memo one diference and not 6 numbers :))
Nice but these 3 'levels' are most arpeggios, not really melodies ... all notes with the same length, pattern etc
learn chords with no personality
