I found myself humming a tune that I recalled from my childhood but could not place in my memory. I hummed it often, and would even slap out it's bassline against my thigh sometimes when I'm bored or working. Then I watch this video, and it all came rushing back: it was the song for the first stage of Choplifter. Between that, level one of Shinobi, and level one of Double Dragon, I think my brain defaults to my old Master System memories for when I need random noise to fill silence.
You had to shoot ten drones in a row without missing one to spawn Superman. Can't believe I still remember all this. It's been 20 years since I've played this game.
Level 3 was by far the hardest and a huge pain in the ass to complete, level 4 was my fav. as it took me so long to complete level 3 and when i finally did and saw a new looking level 4 i was happy about it! Ahhh to be 8 yrs old again.
That's because this was based on the arcade version -- which was inspired by the old home computer versions of "Choplifter". Many popular arcade games got ported to computers and consoles, and back then, it was very rarely the other way around.
Sean Sullivan I remember I used to sit there at the missile silo and just shoot at them things hoping I can shoot the thing when he comes out it was scary at first as I never knew what it was but it became funny after I learn how to beat the game down and I still have my master system it was a very first game system ever played on as a kid my dad was gifted the Sega Master System for an anniversary present and that's all I had ever played up until Super Mario came out
@Lengonator If you shot the bunker, especially a burnt out one, you could trigger a "hero" and he made the hostages "appear" to run faster. The missle on the water levels from the subs were a bitch. Trick I discovered to beat it , especially hard levels, was to have the chopper face backwards and go backwards into places.
@Lengonator Yes if you shot in a certain spot superman did fly out and the more of them you made appear the faster the men would run to your helicopter when you landed.
@soopahsoopah I learned the trick for the caves was to fly backwards throught them, the fire balls and falling rocks are delayed in reacting to you, lol, go figure. It works every time for me.
I like how you don't get any anti air support near your base when your dropping off hostages. Thanks for the help bastards. Your risking your life out there, the least they could do is protet you from enemy attacks when your at home lol.
@Lengonator - YES!! LOLOL, not only do I remember Superman on Level 1 (shoot the burnt out bunkers after you've saved the prisoners)...but also Jaws on Level 2 ( shoot the front of one of the ships & hover down onto water)....AND they also had ET hidden in the cave part of Level 3.... Cheers - J
@Lengonator Yep superman, jaws on the sea levle and rambo on the destert levels would pop out now and then. Never figured out how to purposly spawn them, seemed completely random. But that might have been the arcade version only - not sure if I ever saw it on the sega master system. I recently pulled out my old sega master system and this game is the only one I had, lol, love this game and hate it too.
@Lengonator I haven't played the game in ages but I think to make superman fly out you need to shoot those things coming out from the bunker a number of times and it would happen
Anyone know if this is the us version? I only got past stage 3 once and I remember it started over at level 1, not the night level featured in this video. Then again it was a long time ago so my memory may just be wrong.
So, you go out and rescue the people and bring them back to an unsecure airfiled where the enemy aircraft are just allowed to fly around and do whatever? lol I loved this game as a kid. my local arcade actually had a sit down cabinet for this game.
I raged and broke my controller playing this game when I was 7 or something. A fucking hard, unforgiving game this was. I remember there was some cheat you could enter to skip 5 levels or so though; would've been helpful to know in my early days of playing this.
@Lengonator Yeah, if you shot enough of those weird floaty-up guys from the opening mouth-type machine, Superman would fly out. Every time you got Superman to fly out, your little dudes on the ground could run faster. Get Superman to appear like 10 times and they'd run like Prefontaine.
hey could somebody tell me names of all helicopter shoot em up games for master system. Im looking one which i had ages a go but cant remember its name, first level started in city
@koffypr Those aren't people he's picking up. They're clowns, and everyone knows you can fit many clowns into a small car, or, in this case, a chopper.
Ahhh Damn, I never got beyond the damn cave, I'd always crash the helicopter against the rock ceiling full of rescued hostages, all dead, including the pilot. What a tragedy LOL.
the superman is on every level every time he comes out it makes the men run faster......on the 1st level you get him by constantly blasting the ships coming out of the ground
@Lengonator Yes i got SuperMan one time when i beat this cave stage,Hardest sonova bitch this stage wuz, think i probably only beat it once or twice, the whole time i owned Choplifter.
COULD NEVER PASS 4th level as a kid still couldnt when i last played it at 16 im now 21 and still cant pass it i love the game though i still have the carttridge.
video quality is a bit of an ouch on this one, nice run though. have you tried using snag-it? users like Judgespear swear by it, maybe that would be better than fraps

Ikr stage 2 music was one I always hummed !
I would give anything except selling my soul to go back and relive my childhood. ANYTHING👍👍👍👍👍

love finding out the hard way landing on the hostage was not a good idea! one of my first games with my master system along with ghostbusters!
man this was a FUN game as a kid!
i used to love this game! i remember playing it at the arcade also! thanks for the memories
Classic game! I was absolutly hooked on it when I was a little kid!
Level 3 was by far the hardest and a huge pain in the ass to complete, level 4 was my fav. as it took me so long to complete level 3 and when i finally did and saw a new looking level 4 i was happy about it! Ahhh to be 8 yrs old again.
lol i remember i used to feel so bad if i ever left one guy behind xD
Man this game was so friggin hard for me. Always crashing into something or killing the people i just rescued.
That's because this was based on the arcade version -- which was inspired by the old home computer versions of "Choplifter". Many popular arcade games got ported to computers and consoles, and back then, it was very rarely the other way around.
Strange that the city is shown on the title screen but the actual city level is missing
esse jogo era muito bom!!
nice game
i miss this game
love this game since i was a kid,wow i only one year old playing this game since 1987
The Stage 1 music sounds like an 8-bit Metallica song! That's pretty damn epic.
Hard as hell game though.
Getting superman to fly out of the bunkers and other secret areas actually made the hostages run much faster.
One of the greatest games ever!! :-)
i love the pink background at stage 2 and the music
the music takes me back
The sounds... the sights... I'm seventeen again!
This was my favorite version of Choplifter.
tarde e jogos de master sytem .................bons tempos
I reckon this was one of the best games on the Sega Master System
does anyone remember if you shoot those things long enough shooting outta the water in stage 2 Dracula would fly out.
Sean Sullivan I remember I used to sit there at the missile silo and just shoot at them things hoping I can shoot the thing when he comes out it was scary at first as I never knew what it was but it became funny after I learn how to beat the game down and I still have my master system it was a very first game system ever played on as a kid my dad was gifted the Sega Master System for an anniversary present and that's all I had ever played up until Super Mario came out
For the version I had, I remember the boat level and once in awhile Superman would fly out.
Look at that, the 1980's, the SMS predicted the F-35, take 1 shot and have to head back and reload.
@Lengonator If you shot the bunker, especially a burnt out one, you could trigger a "hero" and he made the hostages "appear" to run faster. The missle on the water levels from the subs were a bitch. omg i miss the 80's games
I played the hell out of this game when I was 5.
@Vanrocco66 unfortunately no but master systems sell for about 30 to 50 bucks on ebay and the game is fairly easy to find :D
good game...i played in the arcade videos...never in Sega but it is cool...
i remember playin this game when i was 5-7. great game haha.
AWESOME!
i used to love that game. i liked to squash the people when i landed on them
I like how you don't get any anti air support near your base when your dropping off hostages. Thanks for the help bastards. Your risking your life out there, the least they could do is protet you from enemy attacks when your at home lol.
The best early games had a rescue dynamic games like Defender and Choplifter
@Lengonator - YES!! LOLOL, not only do I remember Superman on Level 1 (shoot the burnt out bunkers after you've saved the prisoners)...but also Jaws on Level 2 ( shoot the front of one of the ships & hover down onto water)....AND they also had ET hidden in the cave part of Level 3.... Cheers - J
Awesome.

My first computer was a commodore 64, This was my first game.
@Lengonator ya i never understood what that was about, but it made the men run faster tho...?
Never did get through the cave when I was a kid.
@Lengonator I haven't played the game in ages but I think to make superman fly out you need to shoot those things coming out from the bunker a number of times and it would happen
mestre .....eu até hoje não consigo passar da terceira fase ...caralho esse cara joga bem .
this game rocks!
Anyone know if this is the us version? I only got past stage 3 once and I remember it started over at level 1, not the night level featured in this video. Then again it was a long time ago so my memory may just be wrong.

This was a lot of fun when I got a loan of it
@soopahsoopah inside the cave is damn hard to play.
@soopahsoopah The caves were easy if you flew backwards into them try it.
If you shot the hull of the carrier (the ship you start on) in the second stage, jaws would show up as an easter egg.
@vidviewer23 Fly backwards into the caves it makes it much easier.
tarde e jogos de master ........................bons tempos .........
Hi, Chopper lifter has sutch greate graphics for an SMS game. All those layers of paralexing. 0.o
It would be nice to have some comintary though.
yeah, found it already but thx anyway. ahh memories, great game indeed ^^
Damm Dude! I wish I knew lifting the chopper every few seconds keeps the bad guys away. I would of saved myself of Carpal Tunnel.
Ricardo 2019, 3200 Pontos!!!...Caraca!!! Como ele chegou, hein?!...
I raged and broke my controller playing this game when I was 7 or something. A fucking hard, unforgiving game this was. I remember there was some cheat you could enter to skip 5 levels or so though; would've been helpful to know in my early days of playing this.

ahh memories
Great game. Cutting off at 40 hostages is weak though. You have to save everyone in the colecovision and 7800 versions.
old school rules!!!
@Lengonator i do , but vaguely
the 80s fuck yes
@Lengonator Yeah superman was in there every time you found one your little men would run a bit faster to the helicopter.
Could never beat the second level! Fun game though.
hey could somebody tell me names of all helicopter shoot em up games for master system. Im looking one which i had ages a go but cant remember its name, first level started in city
Do anyone remember that Superman Flew out of one of those bunkers? or is it just me?
Ahhhh!! GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!!
Parallax scrolling FTW.
@koffypr Those aren't people he's picking up. They're clowns, and everyone knows you can fit many clowns into a small car, or, in this case, a chopper.
I could never get past the 3rd level. (*_*)
@Lengonator Not just you. I remember that
When life was good
Ahhh Damn, I never got beyond the damn cave, I'd always crash the helicopter against the rock ceiling full of rescued hostages, all dead, including the pilot. What a tragedy LOL.
We played the first stage for ages and fucked around alot. And then this random superman flying out of a bunker. WTF
the superman is on every level every time he comes out it makes the men run faster......on the 1st level you get him by constantly blasting the ships coming out of the ground
no shit that cave was a bitch... stalagtites, fireballs and trouble-bubbles
talk about black hawk down!....lol crash landed that chopper many times!...
like jackal but with helicopters
@soopahsoopah The caves were easy if you did them backwards.
Is this game available on any of the Wii or Xbox 360 "classic game" CD's?
@Nevermore8891 try the Meka emulator
@Lengonator Yes i got SuperMan one time when i beat this cave stage,Hardest sonova bitch this stage wuz, think i probably only beat it once or twice, the whole time i owned Choplifter.
which version is better 7800 or master system?
@Lengonator if you hovered and shot down so many ICBMs consecutively, than Sup would fly out!
Prob the best game on the SMS
2D Desert Strike :D
man, I HATED this games when kid! So damn hard... could never go too far
I liked gangster town too
COULD NEVER PASS 4th level as a kid still couldnt when i last played it at 16 im now 21 and still cant pass it i love the game though i still have the carttridge.
America saves the day
WTF is that thing that makes that noise and flys next to u at 7:57? :S
video quality is a bit of an ouch on this one, nice run though. have you tried using snag-it? users like Judgespear swear by it, maybe that would be better than fraps
Jesus Christ...talk about old school!!!!
Apache air assault VS Choplifter LOL LOL cannot think :D
God I wish games still used this kind of terrible music. So awesomely nostalgic.
@lordioris 8 bit graphis and music, classicly annoying. These were the days when there were no audio option to turn the sound or music off.
trough what 1985.
