I’ve watched this dudes whole career and I gotta say…I’ve never seen this bass player without a big ass smile on his face 😁 Safe to say that dude LOVES his job 😂
Derek Trucks is one of the best slide guitarists alive. Carlos is a living legend.....I am glad to see them play. There is no competition in this, only two great players complimenting each other.
Derek ALWAYS shines! he is honored to share the stage w/Carlos I am sure! After all, with the Allman's , he plays with warren haynes every night! derek is very humble and always plays to complement, rather than over power another player, and he makes it look effortless as well! :D
I believe this is the show I went to. The Masonic Auditorium in S.F. "Please welcome Carlos Santana"(!) A woman out front said she heard there was a rumor that Carlos was going to show up. Sure enough! And the magic ensued. Thank you Derek, and C.S.
These two positively soar together best I have ever heard Carlos play with in a sit in situation Derek leads the way and he is only too happy to comp along and get a few leads in there too
If you don't hear how certain instruments sing, like slide, the bone and the harp, I can't help you. This is why Derek is so great, it sings in his hands
You are so right. Whoever says one player smokes all over the other is simply stating his opinion, a reflection of his or her ego. Then it becomes a matter of what he or she thinks and really it gets right away from enjoyment of the music as an offering from these great players feeding off each other. If people want to give us the result of the "competition"in their heads, then they could at least provide us with a list of performance criteria with respective rankings, to maintain objectivity.
I'm a musician myself and talked to lot's of them so i think Derek would say that he really likes Santana's playing and Santana would say the same about Derek's playing. We're talking, having a conversation with instruments and we appreciate other "voices" and listen..
They're saying it here! Carlos has had Derek sit in a number of times. He's said: "this player is the future." Of course Derek has reverence for Carlos. That's why he here (!)
Albert king was indeed, a relentless, unstoppable, force of nature. Saw him many times, spoke briefly with him once. A major badass. He is sorely missed.
This is flat out killer! I've seen both of these greats several times but never lucky enough to catch a jam with these two. Such positive energy and emotion always flows from them both. I will miss the old DTB but await what is coming from he and Susan. Thanks for highlights of what had to have been a truly special night...
Did carlos win any grammys or play for the president...he can't match the much younger Derek note foe note. But I love Carlos, his gifts and enthusiasm and the fact he loves to play and perform...AWESOME
Thank you for doing this. I was there standing right behind the lady filming the video upfront. What a great show on a Wednesday night in San Francisco. Far from sold out show at the old Avalon Ballroom now called the Grand.
And just to be clear, Anyday is from Derek and the Dominoes (which I guess an allman bro played on so I guess it is kinda partially an Allman Bros track, but not really)
Thanks for taking the time to think clearly and respond as a mature adult. It's like a breath of fresh air. You obviously have a discerning ear for the good stuff, no matter what the genre. This ability not only enhances the enjoyment of music, but also everything else life has to offer. (art, food, conversation, architecture, friends, family, love, etc.) The world needs more like you. Hat's off, bro, and all the best. Saying something positive is way better than being a troll.
If you can maintain your outlook, no matter what kind of shit the world throws at you, yer gonna be o.k. It's always a pleasure to correspond with individuals such as yourself. All the best.
@TrucksStop what show was it i was at the Montreal show and it was such and amazing concert both of them jammed all night and the whole band was great the drummer and the conga/percussion solos were so crazy good, defiantly an unforgettable night
You're right when you say Carlito still loves the music and enjoys playing-he seemed to get a great deal out of this song with Derek and the band.Still, it's a little frustrating not to have any new material on album from him that demonstrates the wealth of his continuing talent these days. shalom Jeff Makor
To play slowly usig less notes at great volume is more difficult than you might imagine. Gary Moore damn sure knows it and you should really read about Gary and who his influences are and why he thinks so much of them. For me, it was Jimi Hendrix. I started reading about Albert Collins, Freddie King, etc and as a young person I could not understand what Jimi was hearing in these old slow out of touch squares. Then I got some weed and liquer and started listening and a whole new world opened up.
@ebay9302 hahaha...was this before or after your Celine Dion listening marathon? I'm pretty sure anyone who listens to her couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper sack.
If you're a quarterback, or you run the100 yd. dash, or you're a short order cook during the breakfast rush at Denny's, or you frame houses, then you are in a line of work where it's easy to say who's the best because your performance is measurable by hard numbers and statistics. But a subjective art form like music has infinite variables, plus the opinions and taste of each listener. Stevie Ray told us "there is no best". He was right. forget the jock attitude and groove on the tunes. enjoy!!
Wow, does Carlos sound incredible. Fucking Ey! SHIT ON A STICK AND SON OF A BITCH! Derek sounds great too but you can hear the miles of experience in Carlos. Ho wonder Dereks great, look who he gets to play with and he sounds like Duane. Shirley Temple would be good too if she sat next to Carlos long enough. I have a very historical old Strat that Carlos borrowed to record his current album with. Can't wait to hear him on a Strat again. "The Bluesman" That's the way, Uh huh, Uh huh, I likes it.
Gary hit ALL the right notes playing with Albert. Whether a billion or 10 Albert only wished he could play half as well as Gary. Garys amp was a little high, but when he was on, no one could play like he could. His duet with BB was also very tasteful and he also blew BB off the stage. Face it, your Homies got shown up by a white Irish boy.
Watching the Stevie Ray studio movie and listening to the ignorant talk about how much SRV is holding back for this old man just makes me lmao. Albert is truely destroying SRV and SRV knows it and he trying sooo hard. And theres Al filing his finger nails. I love Albert because it's said that he really hated the fact that all these people were and continue to this day to "rip him off" and he receive no credit or money. He even asks SRV to put one of his songs on SRVs record (so he could get $)
I just put that up to be funny, but it is sad that most people will never understand why so many people will tell you that Al is the best in the face of Jimi Hendrix and Derek and Danjo. You really have to look at the whole picture. Al was a black man at a time when it wasn't too cool to be black. He taught himself to play left handed on right handed strung guitar. He "basically" took Elmore James "licks" and created a musical language that only he can speak and play with any kind of music.
concretejungle80cruz : Carlos is one of most humble musicians ever. The reason why he is not comping is related to his setup. Carlos probably is using his long time Mesa Boogie Mark I, which is a simple amp, but with a double stage pre-amp. That means high gain. That’s why the guitar screams (or cries, if you prefer), but play chords becomes tough. Even dropping the volume on the guitar itself. That’s why he does more counter-point phrases (and Carlos is great doing that) rather than play the harmony. I think his approach here is the band is providing a great harmonic and rhythmic background, and if I try play chords I won’t help them. When he has his full gear he has how to manage this kind of situation.
LOL I sincerely don't want to dump on your hero. There are shall we say an infinite different perspectives on who wins in an "old school blues head cuttin' contest". Your opinion is just as valid as mine, no more no less. For me Gary is more a hard rock/metal player, but I know he loves Albert King. Did you ever wonder why he loves Albert King? Albert can do something most people cannot. He can bring the same emotions and fire with simple slow sparse notes played and Gary can't.
10 Grammy's, 100 million albums sold....Played for the President??!!..No, but neither did Hendrix!!..I guess Derek is better than Jimi now..OH BOY!..Look man, I absolutely love Derek, but can we not canonize people until they've been around the block as long as someone like Santana, and others, please?..I've been an Allman fan since I saw them for the first time at Hofstra Univ., 1971 when I was just 14..Tell you what, I'd love to ask Derek what he thinks of Santana's guitar playing.
@ebay9302 Man, I get sick of hearing crap like this. This was two great players, playing to complement one another. To say one is better, or smoked the other is absurd. Each of the great guitarists out there have unique talents that we are all blessed to be able to hear and if we are lucky, experience in person. Quit making it a competition. If you want to see people competing, watch an athletic event where there is an actual winner and loser. With music WE ALL WIN!
Well thats maybe an example of a good troll, a lost art on most of the people posting shit these days. Its easier to get attention with negativity than positivity. Carlos Santana 4 God 2012!! Join the ilumination! woo
LOL bad troll. Yes Gary Moore played a billion more notes in 5 minutes than Al did his entire life, so I guess he won. Ever heard of Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn? nevermind.. I'm high
I've seen him six times..I know Frank Vignola; one of the best guitarists on the planet, right now..So, what does that make me, a fucking hero?!..If you are the musical critic you claim to be, you'd know that music is a very subjective thing..It's what moves you..Carlos' playing doesn't move you. That's fine. You said as much, but went a step further and said he's a shit guitarist..I can't respect anything else you say, once you went there..If I don't like someone, I don't listen for 35 yrs.
..no.. it screams that i have a different standard of what i consider good guitar. carlos has never done anything to turn me on, and i've given him 35 years to try, and i've played in a band that opened for him, so i've been close. i just think he's a very ordinary, highly overrated guitar player. nice guy, shit player... just so you know...good guitar doesn't have anything to do with your callouses.
Two of the best guitar players on the planet...Stevie Ray Vaughan already in heaven
Allot of clean clear energy flowing! Yeah, Santana understands were this music is coming from!
You are correct sir!
After 12 years it just being recommended to me.
Back then there was a time limit, so this is in two parts. Part two is perhaps even better, but hardly watched.
Derek ALWAYS shines! he is honored to share the stage w/Carlos I am sure! After all, with the Allman's , he plays with warren haynes every night! derek is very humble and always plays to complement, rather than over power another player, and he makes it look effortless as well! :D

A woman out front said she heard there was a rumor that Carlos was going to show up.
Sure enough! And the magic ensued.
Thank you Derek, and C.S.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 🎸
Thanks for what this jewel 🙏
Never heard Carlos play this more pure blues-style lead before... He's good at it!
Top notch on amazing scale!
We are so lucky to be able to hear such great talents!

This brought me so much joy --sheesh--just the coolest dudes
great stuff...carlos is energized.... Derek makes him work.
Yes I agree. they are like andrea pirlo with messi
I think Carlos KNOWS he's looking at the future of Great Guitarists next to him! No doubt about it.
You can certainly tell Santana enjoys Trucks slide licks!
He's said: "this player is the future."
Of course Derek has reverence for Carlos. That's why he here (!)
watching them both steal licks is great!!!
Albert king was indeed, a relentless, unstoppable, force of nature. Saw him many times, spoke briefly with him once. A major badass. He is sorely missed.
The second tune they jam to gets me on my feet and I just want to dance. Awesomness, this is true magic, thanks for sharing this
This is flat out killer! I've seen both of these greats several times but never lucky enough to catch a jam with these two. Such positive energy and emotion always flows from them both. You can tell they were having a real good time.
Fukin brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting this. Soooooo Good !
I was behind the exit sign...way over in New Zealand...but I felt every fucking note from my rooter to my tooter ha ha ha...
AHAH! That's it. Now I can hear those vocals (Whitlock, Clapton) in my head. Thanks!
Thank you for doing this. I was there standing right behind the lady filming the video upfront. What a great show on a Wednesday night in San Francisco. Far from sold out show at the old Avalon Ballroom now called the Grand.
Thanks man; This is now my favorite 'trucks stop.'
And just to be clear, Anyday is from Derek and the Dominoes (which I guess an allman bro played on so I guess it is kinda partially an Allman Bros track, but not really)
Thank you!
This is just sick good!
you were lucky to be there....nice!
Thank you
You my friend are a genius with a good ear for music.

Wow!!! enough said
Am I wrong or are they jamming on Jimi's "Who Knows" riff?
You're right when you say Carlito still loves the music and enjoys playing-he seemed to get a great deal out of this song with Derek and the band.Still, it's a little frustrating not to have any new material on album from him that demonstrates the wealth of his continuing talent these days.

Question?
Hendricks did this with that BG grove. Is it hendricks or did he cover someone els?
this reminds me of the Allman Brother so much..... Bet its what would have been....
Two guys worthy to play with Jimi. "Who Knows." What's the 2nd song? Can't name that Allman Bros. track yet.
Wonderful tribute to band of gypsy , I would to to see santana try some slide 🎸
@ebay9302 hahaha...was this before or after your Celine Dion listening marathon? I'm pretty sure anyone who listens to her couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper sack.

@AZRacer2000 Well said.

Derek Trucks Band- So Close So Far Away
🎉
If Bonnie Raitt is the Queen of the slide, Derek is the undisputed King!

@RE4RULEZ1398 too much beer?
This is the Santana I love, not the stuff like Smooth
the main scale/chords please?
Derek is an accomplished guitarist with limited emotional connection to his instrument. if he ever makes that spiritual leP he will be there!
Gary hit ALL the right notes playing with Albert. Whether a billion or 10
Albert only wished he could play half as well as Gary.

i think derek was being humble! Carlos, come on man, play some rhythm for Derek while he breaks off a few, he did for you!
