- Having only recovered from the worst weather conditions ever recorded at the TransGranCanaria I thought lightening couldn't strike twice. How wrong I was. The Cape Wrath Ultra threw everything at the participants. Lashing rain, driving wind and piercing hail....It Was Glorious!! This video follows my journey of pushing myself to the limit for 8 Days through the magnificent Scottish Highlands. Definitely one for the big screen.
Great to see the Cape Wrath ultra as it really is. Thanks for filming so much footage. Usually only see the highlights real of scenery and sunshine.
Thanks, yes I was keen to capture the essence of the whole race and am very happy with how the video turned out. I agree, I turn off very quickly if all I’m offered is scenery and sunshine. Thanks again for watching.
Another great video. Fantastic scenery….but no idea how you continue to run in that mud for days. Respect…and we’ll done! 👍🍷
Thanks Emlyn, the body is an amazing thing. It seems when you tell it “this is going to last 8 days” it calibrates itself accordingly. So many people, myself included, developed cankles and swelling on the bus journey back to Fort William after the event…but the job was done then so who cares 😀
Brilliant video, really good to see so much of the course and your honesty about how hard some of the days were. Thank you for doing this and posting.
Oh thanks Jodie, I really appreciate that. The reason I started making these videos is because I wasn’t seeing the bits I was interested in seeing in other people’s videos. These races are tough but ultimately very rewarding.
Well done, that’s so impressive and you did it all with a smile on your face
Thanks, yeah I have nothing but fond memories of The Cape Wrath Ultra. The opportunity they provide us to run in these remote parts of Scotland is next level.
Finally found your channel Dave, hope all is well and looking forward to seeing more videos that put the rest of us normal folk to shame!
Thanks Eoin, I really appreciate your kind comment. I’m here in Auburn California about to run the 100k tomorrow but I have picked up a ligament injury so you’re about to see just how normal I can be 😂 I’m about to put a quick pre race video together so you get the first heads up. Thanks for watching 👍
from one David to another, just thank you. you are amazing . you have planted a seed in me. last year I did the Ring O Fire ultra on Anglesey, and at 53 I did it. Now I'm thinking maybe Scotland next?
Apologies, I was sure I had replied to this comment. My advice David? "Don't let the old man in". Do I think you could complete the CWU? I have no doubt...none.
Thanks for the video - its nicely made and gave us a nice selection of the course on a daily basis. All the way from Vietnam !
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. Are you living the expat lifestyle in Vietnam? I’ll never forget taking a slow boat through Halong Bay. Breathtaking ☀️⛰️
@@filmmytrailrun I have been here for 5 years, pre co-vid and got married here and have a daughter already. Will be coming back to the UK next year but just for education for the children, after that i will return to live in Vietnam as it is a lot safer in Vietnam than in the UK and we dont have immigration problems like we do in the UK, as im sure you are aware off. I am also an ultra runner, i have completed the Moab 240 in Utah and have done a solo run of the coast to coast and the pennine way prior to me coming the Vietnam and thats why i appreciate your film of the cape wrait run - what do you think about running in one way the entire length rather than broken stages as you did ? thanks a lot mate.
This was so good. Amazing performance out there and loved the video
Thanks Liam, it really was a great adventure. Hard to believe the next cohort will be striking off into the highlands this weekend.
Super video Dave. Looked amazing. More singing in the next one please 🙏 🙂 well done!
Aha, good man, thanks for watching Paul, and yes I agree, I shouldn’t hide my incredible singing voice under a bushel 😂😂😂
Fantastic effort. Well Done.
Thank you, it was such a super race. Might be nice to try it in better weather mind you 😛
From another David to great David. Fair play, my man. Fair play. I'm in awe.
Thanks David, I appreciate your feedback….now on to the next adventure 🏃🏼♂️😛
Magical,awe inspiring
Thanks, so glad you enjoyed the video.
Brillant video! congratulations! 👏
Thanks Kevin, I’m glad you enjoyed it. There’s more good stuff to come 👍
@@filmmytrailrun good to hear! love the videos. I'm running the Limerick marathon this Sunday so really enjoyed your runners perspective video of that race too
I forgot to congratulate your wife ! Brava !
Yes, Claire is a phenomenon in her own right. Thanks again.
Really enjoyed this, loving the positivity. New subscriber here!
Thanks Lewis, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing. More to come 👍
Hey bud. Just came across your videos and had to say hello. Loved watching . Did my first marathon a month ago and really enjoyed it. Thinking of an ultra in the future. Keep up the great work . 👍
Thanks for your feedback; it sounds like you might have the running bug. I moved from marathons to ultra and my advice, initially at least, is don’t attack the hills. You can’t run an ultra the same way you run a marathon. Slow it down, build up the consistency and mileage and you’ll smash it.
Just catching up on this now, great video and incredible achievement, well done! The route looks stunning (for the most part!!)
Thanks Barry, yeah, I'd love to go back and experience it in the sunshine 😂
I just found your channel - I loved watching this Vid at the weekend - and WELL DONE on your result :)
Thanks Will, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I just thought these epic adventures should be captured for prosperity.
Awesome!!! What an effort, brought a lump to my throat and a tear to the eye. CHAPEAU!
Ah brilliant, I’m glad I could recreate some of the emotion I felt.
Couldn’t have wished for better tent mates. Brilliant video. Brilliant cape wrath companions.
Straight back at ya. The videos are hard work but they bring back such fond memories. I'm very interested to see what your next harebrained idea will be.
Wow what a wonderful watch, a great effort with the filming… congratulations unbelievable effort, fantastic
Thanks so much for the positive feedback Alan. I’m happy that you enjoyed the video.
Fantastic watching you amazing ultra run. Thanks fir the natural and inspiring way you communicate incredible country side and congratulations on your incredible 3rd place. What an athlete. 👍👍
Thanks so much Teresa for your generous comments. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video.
Loved this!! I am running my first ultra next year……
Thanks Debbie and best of luck in your own ultra. If I’ve learned anything it is that success in ultras is built on a foundation of consistency and high mileage, i.e. get out often and try to average a high weekly mileage. Focus on those two and you’ll do great 👍 💪🏃♀️
Well done Lad 👍🏻 You are a hardy fella👏🏻 Thank you for taking me along 😊
Glad you enjoyed the journey. It is an amazing part of the UK. Beautiful and remote....if perhaps a little unforgiving at times 😉
Hello David, thank you for your fantastic video.
You are so full of sincerity, genuineness, humility and really friendly.
Beautiful landscapes in rude conditions (from a southern french point of view !).
Congratulations on your race and your superb podium ranking !
Greetings of Montpellier (heat and stones!).
Jérôme
Thanks so much for your kind comment Jérôme, it really means a lot.
Congratulations man. I was there, but was timed out on day 3. The weather and underfoot conditions were pretty horrific. Great video.
Thanks David, yeah, Day 2 caught me by surprise. All that bog in the first half. Sorry to hear you got timed out. It’s a great race and hats off to the organizers for making it all possible.
Ah you certainly know how to treat a lady. Defiantly going to take my wife to Scotland for a romantic break now. Congrats on your podium place David, so well deserved. Really enjoyed the vid'. All the best.
Thanks for the positive feedback Nick. My wife loves the hardship because she knows the comforts will feel all the sweeter afterwards. Enjoy your romantic getaway.
New follower and looking back on some of these videos. This was just class and what an adventure - over a week of running, sounds and looks just class. Congrats on finishing third, you can run as well as video 👏👏 🇮🇪
Thanks Shane, what I’ve discovered in 2022 is that distances less than 50 miles (per day) are where I perform best…but for some reason I still can’t resist the 💯 milers 😯. Delighted with the 3rd place finish in the Cape Wrath…and with the video. It’s a great memory.
Epic video. Really enjoyed it. Good on you both! And thanks for sharing 😊 All the way from Australia. I love Scotland. Can't wait to get back there.
Aha, just realized I replied from my other RUclips account. The sentiment is the same. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Well done Dave. What an incredible experience and thanks for giving us a visual snapshot of what it was like out there. Congratulations to you both on completing an incredible journey!!!
Thanks Ray and thanks for all your support before, during and after the event. It means a lot.
After finishing in 2021, dot watching was a different experience! Huge well done not just for your impressive result but also for dealing with the weather. Congrats!
Cheers. Yeah looking back at the video now I feel like I should have taken the camera out more in the really bad conditions but as memory serves I was head down and driving through in those moments. Well done on your own finish. I'm sure it's cherished medal in your collection.
@@filmmytrailrun I think you did a great job as it was! Best example of what you had versus us is on the respective day 4 videos I think.
Cherished indeed - need to get it framed and promoted from hanging on the stairs 🤣
This was brilliant! Really enjoyed it. Massive congratulations!
Thanks Michael, really appreciate the positive feedback.
Fantastic stuff, you made it look like a park run 😳!
Thanks, it’s amazing what you can achieve in the editing room 😎
Well Done , Amazing Achievement . I have been walking parts of the Cape Wrath and its tough enough .
Thanks, yes the Cape Wrath is tough but then that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. Remote, beautiful….,and yes…tough. Now on to the next adventure we go 😀
Super inspiring. Well done to you and your wife, so great you could experience it together 👍🏼
Thanks Jessica, you're 100% correct. I don't underestimate how privileged I am that my wife loves nothing more than donning a pair of trail shoes and hitting the trails.
Terrific performance, you seemed to take it all in your stride. Obviously very well prepared. Well done. Great video as usual.
Thanks John, it was my first multiway event so I wasn't sure how my body would hold up over such an extended period of time but thankfully it all came good. Happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
Great video David. Superb running out there.
Thanks Thomas, glad you enjoyed it. You got a special mention too 😉
What an amazing adventure! Looks like proper good fun out in an amazing place experiencing all the weather!! Compelling watching too!
Thanks. It sure was an amazing adventure, wrapped up in our own bubble away from everything in the majesty of The Scottish Highlands for 8 days. If you're looking for your next big challenge....
@@filmmytrailrun I have my next big challenge..... but this is definitely one I will keep in mind for the future! What is next for you?
Watch this space 😉
Super Video and brilliantly documented journey, still don't know how you saved that trip on Day 7 Epic!
Thanks Martin, that was, without a doubt, the closest I came to ending my race right there. I wish someone had caught THAT on camera. Well done on your own finish. Warriors all.
Fair play Dave to both yourself and Claire, it was some journey! Thanks for sharing .
Thanks Leah, it sure was some journey. Claire was "Warrior Extraordinaire". Putting in long days but always turning around the next morning to do it all again. I don't think the video does justice to those brave souls that spent far longer than me out in some very harsh conditions on The Scottish Highlands..
Well done Dave 👏 loved this video . Keep up the singing 😉
Cheers Mark, not so sure about the singing but "Something Inside So Strong" had been knocking around in my head all week so I thought it deserved a shout out 🎶
Many thanks Dave. Really enjoyed the video. Slightly different challenges to the 2021 race........not as many midges but the conditions looked brutal (think you's definitely drew the short straw).
Would I do it again.....absolutely!!!!!
Thanks Grant, I really enjoyed the experience. It certainly takes you out of the “everyday”. I wonder what 8 days of sunshine would have felt like 🤔
Huge congratulations Dave and what an achievement, you ran so well so well prepared and always smiling, the video was a great watch and brought home the challenges you all faced in that weather, If you get the opportunity, any chance of sharing any foot care tips? can't imagine how you managed in all that wet & mud. All the very best for the adventure ahead.
Thanks Jon. I intend to do a "what I learned/what I would do differently" video but on the foot care side of things going up a size in your trail shoes is a big help. Just gives you that extra space in the toe box particularly on the long decents.
@@filmmytrailrun Thanks Dave for taking the time to reply, look forward to the next instalments, all the very best
Well done! You make that look way too easy 😂
Thanks, it’s simple…but it’s not easy 😊
Did you wear the Ronhill Mountain Equipment Shakedry?
If so how did it hold up?
No, mine is an Under Armour gortex jacket but in that shakedry style. It’s great generally but when the rain is heavier and persistent it doesn’t hold up as well as I’d like. In those conditions something heavier would be a better choice.
Epic and mental!!🤣How did you manage to look as fresh as a daisy in every photo!!!!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Stuart, the trick is enjoying what you are doing...oh yeah...and knowing where the photographer is located 😂
@@filmmytrailrun 🤣🤣👍
Well done david. Smashing video and congratulations. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and was proudly cheering you on even though its in the past! Can I ask, do you bring spare gopro batteries? Mine seems to go after 1 hour ish. And what was the total distance of the race? Once again well done! Achievements like this should be broadcasted nationally!
Thanks as always for your kind comments. Yeah, I do have a spare GoPro battery with me but to be honest I very rarely need to use it. When I record a race I take a lot of short clips that generally don’t add up to more than 30 or 40 minutes. Starting editing the Ultra Trail Cape Town today so am giving myself a deadline of next weekend to get that published. Then it’s on to the 2023 calendar and it’s starting to look EPIC 🎊🥳🎉
@@filmmytrailrun great stuff and i look forward to seeing it! Best of luck in the race 🫡 bring it home 💪
Awesome.
Thanks Chris. Glad you think so!
Don't get me wrong, I love running but I'm not sure I love it that much... Great video though and congratulations
Thanks, what I’ve learned is that there is pleasure in pain. Acceptance is the key 😛
By the way. you should come and do the Ring o Fire Ulta on Anglesey, you would love it
I certainly wouldn't rule it out. You've put it on my radar.
I'm thinking about doing this just for the chips. 🤣
That’s a good enough reason. Chips never taste better than when you come in after a long day in the Scottish Highlands. Don’t think about it, sign up now and figure the rest out later 😀
epic!
Epic is one way to describe it…I can think of a few others 😂
gotta get rid of that 45 degree flag... it's meant to be 23 degrees
I have no clue what this comment means 😀
