Otometoge St. Mary Chapel is located on the Otome Pass in the town of Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The chapel was built in the forest in 1951 to commemorate the Christian martyrs imprisoned in this place. In 1868, 153 Christians from Nagasaki Urakami were exiled to Tsuwano. Severe torture was used to force them to apostatize, and 37 people lost their lives. The exiled believers were freed after the ban on Christianity was lifted in 1873 and returned to Urakami. It is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to one of the martyrs a few nights before his death and kept him company. That is why the chapel built here is today dedicated to Mary.
