Story 5: OP is not the jerk. He just wanted the house since the brother was proposing that the parents sell the house which legit has SENTIMENTAL VALUE too, not just price value. OP stated that the house was there for 3 gens, and he wants to inherit it bc of its sentimental value. Also, OP never said anything abt DESERVING the house, and he seemed like he wouldnt have forced talked 'bout it further if the parents agreed with OP's brother. The brother also has made bad financial decisions in the past and the parents helped him.

Although OP deserves the house more, not just because he has a family, but because that brother has been bailed out so many times financially (and it came to my attention the brother would only sell the house anyway). Best thing they could do is
      A. Put the house in a trust with their names and OP’s names in it so as to avoid inheritance tax, probate, and being sued by the brother.
      B. Do the trust thing, but put the brother’s name on a small percentage of the trust, and the OP can buy out his brother so as not to deal with him and his brother can start a new life, or
      C. Do the same as A. but give the brother a cash equivalent of the share of the house’s appraised/assessed value with the stipulation that if he contests any will or tries to sue the estate or sue his brother, he’ll get nothing and like it.

Agreed. As far as I can see it, if the brother wants everything split 50/50 then the brother needs to pay the parents back for every last cent they put into bailing him out first because that money no doubt came out of their own savings and the potential inheritance that would be split between their children. Or he can grow up and accept that he's already getting more than half of everything between the money his parents spent on him and then getting basically everything but the house on top of it since OP and the parents are fine with OP getting the house and the brother getting the rest. Fair is only fair when all the circumstances are looked at, even the ones you wanna avoid because they make it actually fair

The house has sentimental value but their parents have almost no money asides from that. The solution? It seems to me that, from what the brother said, OP already owns a house which is smaller than their parent's. Maybe OP could inherit the house and he could sell or transfer his old house to his brother so he could sell it or whatever. It's a win-win resolution

  • @QuickManEXE

Story 1: I dont get why the OP put up with this crap for 3 years. Some people just should not be allowed to be landlords and/or rent out their homes. This landlord is the epitome for awful landlords. There are a lot of good landlords out there, but this guy is the poster child of bad ones. Good on the OP for reporting all of this to both police and building inspectors. Hopefully this guy spends some good time in jail.
Story 2: Well done by the OP. You sir, are awesome! I dont get why old guys like this constantly try to hit on women decades younger then them ilke this. I get that age is only a number, but come on.... did he really think this was going to go well? Also, dont try and pull the "im old therefore i dont have to listen to you/you have to listen to me" card here. This old guy is really lucky all he got was a stern talking to by the OP, because there are a lot of people out there that would've gotten physical pretty quickly.
Story 3: Considering how lousy of a sibling and person Daisy is to the OP, im surprised that the OP even acklowledges her existance, much less wanting to go to her new restaurant. Also, there is no way the parents dont know what had happened between the OP and Daisy, so to pull the "family supports family" line makes them jerks too, but Daisy is the obvious bigger jerk here. Screw her.
Story 4: Talk about being super judgmental here. Good on the wife for telling off this stupid security guard, and other people too it sounds like. They all need to rack off. Honestly, i wouldve considered complaining against the security guard for harassing them.
Story 5: OP is not a jerk here and if anything, the brother is the selfish one here, not the OP. This is also a good reason as to why you dont openly discuss inheiritance or estates or anything of the like.... it is ALWAYS going to cause some kind of resentment or bitterness among someone, and thats exactly whats going on here. The parents are in no way bias here, and it does sound like they've given the brother a lot over the years too. In the end, nothing in their estate has be to split 50/50, this is all up the parents here and no one else.
Story 6: Not the jerk at all here... Ruby is 100% a freeloader here. She definitely needs to grow up here and do something here. Since the OP and her mom arent accepting any kind of rent or anything... then why should she try and do anything to better herself? Everything the OP was 100% called for here. Give it enough time and they will pretty much take over the whole house. They need to shape up or ship out.

Story 1: That was a slumlord, more than a landlord. I’m glad the slumlord got a felony, but OP needs to sue him to the point where he ends up owning that property. Also, why put up with it for so long?
Story 2: “You can’t talk to me like that!” says the jerk who S.H.’d a random woman.
Story 3: Don’t support nor reward people who are horrible to you. If anything, try to boycott the restaurant that she owns. Try to find any health code violations and report them. OP did nothing wrong. Those parents are stupid and so is Daisy.
Story 4: What an idiot rent-a-cop. He needs to mind his own business and OP should report him to his employers. I love what the wife said.
Story 5: NTA. If any reason, than because the brother got bailed out so many times. But the parents should at least leave the brother with something, if not a percentage ownership of the house then the financial equivalent so he won’t be left high and dry. To leave one son the house yet the other nothing is a bad idea, he could contest the will.
Story 6: NTA. You gave her and her mom free shelter, it wouldn’t hurt her and her mom to help out around the house if they don’t adequately help out nor properly financially contribute. You even let them bring in their wild pet cat and drive them around because they don’t drive. Ruby is the selfish one, and needs to grow up.

Story 5 op is not the jerk! The host is being a little bit of a jerk here as well as the brother of original poster. Just because somebody has a family does not mean that they're being a jerk or they feel like they deserve it more because of that. Original poster wanted the house because it was a family generation thing and there was a lot of sentimental value behind it and the brother only wanted it so he could probably sell it for more cash because all he was concerned about was money from what the sounds of it. If the brother ended up getting it and the parents didn't sell it he would have probably sold it for the cash. Besides that the brother actually had ended up getting more money over time as well in the past according to the original poster. It sounds like a fair payout in my opinion but even if it wasn't they could do like a joint thing where they like share the house or part of it being rented out or something to the brother and just because the original poster has a wife and kids and is closer doesn't mean that they're in the wrong. It sounds like original Poster's brother was just jealous and wanted the money and even if the house wasn't sold and they got the house then he was probably going to sell it anyways. Original poster was not in the wrong in any way and they were trying to figure out which was the best option and the brother said it best when he had stated that it was too big for one person. If it's too big for one person then obviously it would have been good to give it to the original poster but now you just want to get jealous because they're not willing to sell the house and instead want to give it to original poster because of your comment. That's what it sounds like here.

OP is the jerk. First, he attempts to manipulate the readers opinion of his brother by mentioning his financial situation. We don't know the specifics, but even if he's not the best with money, it shouldn't matter for this situation unless he's using the money for illegal purposes. If anything, it just means he may need the money more than OP. secondly, It's definitely not a fair split at all. Even if he got everything but the house it still doesn't sound like that would be of equal value. Thirdly, if OP did the reasonable thing to buy out his brothers half now, he still can sell it in the future which would likely be appraised at a higher value than it's current value so OP still would benefit. Unless I missed something, the best solution would be to get it appraised, give OP 50%, divide remaining assets or give all remaining assets to brother under the assumption the home value will be equal to or greater than the value of the remaining assets. OP doesn't need the money as much as his brother apparently, but that doesn't mean the brother deserves less wtf lol.

The fifth story. I'm going to have to disagree with the narrator on the jerk part. The OP isn't the jerk he has a family and the OP's parents agree to keeping the house in the family plus the the way the OP's brother responded that it's too big for only one person is a red flag. If they sold the house I'll bet the brother would want a bigger share of the money because he doesn't have any savings to retire. So the best option in my opinion would be to find out what the house is worth and give about half of the money to the brother to make things fair.

So both brothers wanted the house as an inheritance, one wants it for his family and the other for an easier retirement life. That's why I suggested the best option would be for the OP to buy out his brother's half of the inheritance, under writing of course, and be done with the whole ordeal.

Obviously did not listen to the story properly about the inheritance. They want to give the one brother the entire monetary some the parents have and just keep the house so he can keep it in the family with his children, and also the older brother is the one who said we should sell the house because it's just too much for one person to have. Meaning that the older brother was thinking he would be the one to get the house and leave his little brother floating in the wind with nothing. So quite frankly you saying he should pay the brother half of the value of the house while living the brother keep the entire monetary some of what is left of his parents estate upon their death is actually unfair and would make YOU the jerk

The inheritance story, the narrator is always on the side of its up to the people writing the will and all of a sudden changes? Narrator flip flops. Its up to the parents and the son with the family should get the house and the other son should get the rest

The op in the story about the house and op want to keep it. Yes the op is the jerk. How ever my grandparents house has been taken care of by my family. So I'm wanting to take it over the house when my grandparents die. This do to my family taking care of the house.
