潮州是一座千年古城，隋朝至今已经1000多年历史；自古至今潮州有着“一府管九县”盛誉，隋开皇十一年(591)。其名是取“在潮之洲，潮水往复”之意。
潮汕位于中国广东省东部沿海，1991年，原来的汕头地级市拆分成现今的汕头、潮州、揭阳三个地级市，统称“潮汕地区”。潮汕地区有三市八地区，但今天潮汕地区有更广泛的定义，在粤东只要是有群体聚居讲潮汕话的地方都可以并入潮汕地区。潮州话，属汉语方言八大语系之一的闽语系。它的词汇丰富，幽默生动，富有极强的表现力，并保存着很多古汉语的成份，因而为越来越多的语言学家所重视。潮州方言有自己的字典《潮州字典》，以及《潮语十五音》等研究地方语言的专著。潮州话虽然属于闽语系，但与闽南话差别较大。
潮州八景，旧时有内外之分，内八景是指于古城街巷之间，而外八景则指城外韩江两岸。由于城市建设的不断发展，内八景已逐渐湮没，今天人们所说的潮州八景是指外八景。
Chaozhou is an ancient city with a millennium history. The Sui Dynasty has a history of more than 1,000 years. Since ancient times, Chaozhou has a reputation of "one government governs nine counties", and Sui Kaihuang was eleven years (591). Its name is taken to mean "in the tideland, the tide reciprocates."
Chaoshan is located on the eastern coast of Guangdong Province, China. In 1991, the original Shantou prefecture-level city was split into the current three prefecture-level cities of Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang, collectively known as "Chaoshan area". There are three cities and eight areas in the Chaoshan area, but today the Chaoshan area has a broader definition. As long as there is a group of people in East Guangdong who speak Chaoshan dialect, they can be incorporated into the Chaoshan area. Chaozhou dialect belongs to the Min dialect family, one of the eight major dialect families of Chinese dialects. It has rich vocabulary, vivid humor, strong expressiveness, and preserves many elements of ancient Chinese, so it is valued by more and more linguists. The Chaozhou dialect has its own dictionary "Chaozhou Dictionary", as well as "Taizhou Fifteen Sounds" and other monographs on local languages. Although Chaozhou dialect belongs to the Min language family, it is quite different from Minnan dialect.
The eight sceneries of Chaozhou used to be divided into inside and outside. The inside eight sceneries refer to the streets and streets of the ancient city, while the outside eight sceneries refer to both sides of the Hanjiang River outside the city. Due to the continuous development of urban construction, the inner eight sceneries have gradually been obliterated. The eight sceneries of Chaozhou that people call today refer to the outer eight sceneries.
