Great review, thanks Gerald! If anyone has any questions about FilmConvert, please reply and we'll do our best to answer
When will the panasonic s1 camera profile be added?
What are the options for current film convert customers hoping to upgrade to nitrate? Purchased prior to 4/2019
I have bought filmconvert Pro on May 7 of this year. Does this give Nitrate too?
@@aidangroll2015 Customers who bought prior to April 1st will receive a special discount to upgrade their license to a Nitrate version
@@BariqRifki Yes it does
The funniest way to color grade for me is to use the ON-OFF button on my display, it really gives a deep dark blacky night feeling... Oh, 1st btw :D
I usually just put on my sunglasses.
Did anyone else catch his morphcut? 0:35 well done
FilmConvert looks like a great tool. I'm pretty much sold on it. Thanks.
The film grain definitely doesn't compress well on RUclips - especially at 1080p - so I've never entirely understood the appeal of this kind of processing. BUT DAMN the update here is nice.
That could be an interesting upload. Do the same clip with varying amounts of grain and view it at 1080p and 4K and see if there's a sweet spot for RUclips.
@@geraldundone Even at 4k it was hard to see in this video other than when it got extreme
@@geraldundone we've done some experiments with this as well to see if we could find a recommended setting for people who want grain not turned to mush by the RUclips compression. The only conclusion we came to was use the highest bitrate practical for you and hope for the best
You got that Tan on ;) Great vid bro.
Ha. Yeah, I'm still a bit red. Thanks, dude.
Welcome back! It looked like lotsa fun. Nitrate looking good. Can't wait to tinker with it.
Your came back with an FJ H400 grade plus warm temp on your face.Nice! Thanks Gerald.
Haha. Yeah. I may have gotten a tad too much sun. 😃
I deeply dislike film emulation but damn, I can appreciate a great tool when I see it.
but why?
You deeply dislike film emulation but you think the tool to create it is great.
Ya, it seems very much improved. I left the film convert because of its slider like you said in shadows and hilite. The Colorista has also same problems in the past now it has improved a lot. Colorista is not film emulation but for color job it does well enough. What do you say Gerald? You can do the VDO on Colorista too from redgiant.
perhaps the white balance temp/tint is being applied as linear light. I find that that transfer mode compositing in linear light really makes coloring look more filmic and not rec. 709 crushing. also, another transfer mode (color), with levels white output 140rgb can clip saturation to film colors. your vectorscope will get fatter but not extend outwards, just like film.
Who's that hottie at 1:13? 😄😄
Awesome video as usual, looking forward to more videos from Kando :)
😜👍
Thanks, Irene!
Beginners question: If "my camera to buy" (Sony RX10IV) is not supported... does it make sense to use Filmconvert?
Does it make a difference if we shoot in HLG 3 BT.2020 beforehand.
Because premiere converts the footage to Rec 709 already right?
(Like, when using the Leeming LUT for example)
Edit:
It's probably how Filmconvert nitrate works, but still. I wonder if there's any advantage/disadvantage if I would keep shooting with the 2020 color space.
Any thoughts ?
I'd have to do some tests and compare. I didn't shoot any 2020 at Kando, but maybe I can do some repeatable shots with both and see what happens.
@@geraldundone That would be neat.
Anyway, thankyou for the knowledge you keep sharing. Truly helpfull!
@@geraldundone I would be really interested in that comparison, as FilmConvert is my go-to for jazzing up an image, but previously you've said there is a benefit to shooting in BT.2020.
Mr Gerald! I just want to say: YOU'RE THE ONE!!💯
Hopefully somebody still answers questions on 2 year old uploads. I have tried the old Film Convert and the newer Nitrate. Whether it's h.264 or ProRes RAW, whether I color correct first or just use uncorrected log footage, as soon as I drop FilmConvert on the clip it looks horrible, toooooo dark, too contrasty, skin tones shot to shit. The only way to get it even half way decent is to turn the opacity down on the adjustment layer I put FC on. In other words way too much work to even get my video back to decent. Any advice, oh Great Undone?
I love using this program! Really enjoyed this video. Your a great communicator!
What a lovely model. She should be in more of your videos. :)
bravo on using a dark skin black female model. very rare that their beauty is given shine.
Bravo for pointing this out.
"Very rare" such a silly comment, black female models are given plenty of shine for their beauty.
@@dogisnotreal1 If you see a lot of these types of instruction videos, they are almost always using white or fair skinned model subjects as examples for color grading. So, it's refreshing when a dark skinned beauty is the subject.
I bought nitrate and i really like it, but sadly my most of videos goes on youtube. And youtube somehow removes all grains and makes my video more pixelated :/ So on videos for youtube- this FX beacomes unusable. Any help?
Thank you Gerald. Another informative video. I love how you deliver information. It allows me to maintain interest throughout and I seem to pick up little things that I was not aware of before that I can apply for other situations or brands. Thanks again.
Appreciate it, Phil. Thanks a bunch.
So it's a bit more of a Creative and Corrective lut.. How would you use the film part of it but using Leeming luts on HLG shots in BT.2020??
Nice shirt boss ;-)
🙌👊
Another great video, I have been following your channel closely and your videos never cease to have super valuable information. Thanks for what you produce!
Great video! Appreciate your ability to talk a little deeper with these things.
Loving how this is looking and I'm gonna have to try it out! Thanks for the video!
I'm sold. Just need the money. Can't wait til the Resolve version is released!!
Resolve version is out now :)
What happens if i shoot with BT.2020?
yeah. its done . thanks man .. bought it
Next intro: I...am your father!
Amazing video as always! Would love to see a video on tips for Color grading footage on Resolve.(footage of the fuji xt3) Thanks!
Great review. Thanks!
Just a note. Tri-X was always and asa/iso 400 film.
dude where did you find the choco-bunny? namibia? did you nibble?
Hey Gerald.
Thumbs up for this video! Very helpful.
I've shot 3 months in HLG1 / BT2020 instead of Rec709 on the A7III.
Any idea how to convert from BT2020 to Rec709 (if it even makes sense on the the 8bit codec)? Or if we can still use the HLG1 profile in Nitrate and tweak it a bit.
Good one -- the Malick segue was pretty tight.
Excellent work. Really enjoyed this.
Great vid. Bought the new version today. I think the old one was good but this one is kind of refined!!
But, the greens, where did they go? They became yellow... this is an issue here in Ireland, we have 40,000 shades of the stuff...
These seems really powerful in concept
Hey Gerald!
Great video man, I like how the grain is subtle. Really enjoy that look. I was wondering if you were a fan of black pro mist filters? I’ve heard they can help if you’re aspiring to get the “Film Look”. Many people recommend the 1/8 or 1/4 but I’d love to see a video of you taking a go at these types of filters. Let me know! Thanks for being so helpful
Hey! Thanks. I've used them in the past, but I'm not a huge fan of them. I don't like the halation they offer. That bloomy light glow around highlights. There are diffusion filters that soften without causing halation, but that's VERY easy to reproduce in post. My technique is to shoot with 0 output sharpening and no diffusion filters and then decide what to do with that footage down the line. Gives me the most neutral starting point.
Gerald Undone I like it! Thanks for info. Appreciate everything you do for the viewers !
God bless ya sir for these videos :D you are a free library of knowledge and we appreciate that :D
Wondering how this compares to some of the similar plugins available today?
I get grain in my videos how do I get rid of that and I also use film convert
Killin it as always 🔥🔥🔥
Great overview. Thanks.
Are you able to blend your luts with their luts in filmconvert?
wonderful review man! keep it up
Please in in your previous video three u compared leeming luts, can u share the presets to the luts u used? Presets Braw settings July 20th and the grade u used.. There r all in preset
Thanks for a great video!
As you are using Davinci Resolve just let us now, what you like better. Grading in Davinci Resolve or with Film Convert in Premiere? :)
The talking head of this video was graded with Resolve, which I enjoy. But they're different. If I want that FilmConvert look, I'll use FilmConvert, which will have Resolve support for Nitrate later this year. If I want a standard clean grade, I use Resolve normally.
I used to have the old version : )
FilmConvert owners will be getting a special discount to upgrade :)
The problem is that all of the grain turns to crap as soon as RUclips/Vimeo compresses your file. It's a great plug-in but it's undermined by online compression.
Well "done" Gerald, enjoyed every second, very informative entertaining and helpful
...peace out
so if I shot HLG3 with my a6600, which profile do I need to download? Almost all of the Sony cameras are full frame so idk if it'll be accurate. Closest one is the a6500 but there's no HLG profiles on there. Any help will be appreciated!
Hi Gerald thx for the video - have you been able to compare FilmConvert Nitrate with Cinema Grade?...doesn't seem to be many videos on that as I am still at the comparison stage which one to get - thx again cheers
Can you use this with the leeming luts?
Thanks for the video! So what does FilmConvert have that Premiere Pro 2020 doesn't have? It seems like the sliders and settings are identical to each other. Also, can LUTs be used in FilmConvert or do they need to be applied in Lumetri Color first?
There's no A6400, should I use A6300 instead?
Hi, just want out what in camera picture profile settings you'd use, aside from rec 709. Saturation % and sharpness? Would film convert handle it?
Any of you guys get the "no parameter is exposed to user or OFX plugin is not available"? and any idea how to fix it?
Hello Gerald, this is a completely unrelated question to this video (LOL). Are tripod ball heads interchangeable? I have an Oben tripod AC-1321 with ball head BA-106, it came with a quick release plate, I want to replace it with an Arca type ball head because I got an “L” bracket for the camera (Fuji X-T2 with a XF-35 lens) so that I can quickly go from horizontal to vertical. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Question for an old school photographer. When you change the ISO on a digital camera, do you get a corresponding change in the grain of the image? In the same way that changing from one film roll to a different roll of film with a higher ASA gives you an emulsion with larger silver flakes and therefor grainer image?
Yes. Higher iso values gives you more grain in the image.
Everytime when i try to drag and drop the plugin to a video i got the message "failed to initialize CUDA" and it dosn´t work. Pls help me!
amazing video
Do you first use the Leeming Lut for correction before applying the film stock?
Would like to know this as well.
No. FilmConvert is a complete solution. It's not colour accurate like Leeming, but is intended to be used from an unprocessed image. I've never tried stacking them, but I imagine the results would be over the top.
Same question. I would love to use lemming to bring back to normal color. Then use film convert for the color grade. I think you can do it, just choose rec.709/rec.709 under your camera.
Would you recommend it with GH5's V-Log?
Yeah, definitely. Although, I've always liked the HLG on the GH5 better.
Hello, nice to see you and enjoy watching a fun video
Stay in frequent communication
Have a nice weekend~^^
1100 +1 like~👱♀️👱♀️👱♀️😣
Good video
Available for after effects?
If I'm using a XT3 with all those built in simulations, would you still recommend me getting this? And does this completely replace Lumetri?
Think of this as more of a tool for colour grading and the film modes in the X-T3 like picture profiles. If you want more flexibility, shoot log on the Fuji and then use this method. It will give different results than the in-camera profiles. If you like the way the in-camera profiles look, then stick with it.
Hello everybody, i have a question, i would be glad if someone would answear.
At 2:17 he says you should use the rec709 version of HLG3 and not the Bt2020 mode. Does he mean the pictureprofil settings? Or in the editing software?
Greatings, Jonas
In Picture Profile settings.
@@geraldundone thanks😊👌🏼
tnx, nice stuff
How do you load camera profile ?
Do you prefer resolve over premiere ?
is it better than lumetri ??
Very interesting video
@Gerald Undone could you please name us your pp setting you used? That would be very nice, thanks😊.
Greatings, Jonas
I mention it a few times in the video. It's HLG3 with Rec. 709 color.
@@geraldundonethanks for answearing.
And everything else, like sharpness etc.?
Thanks for helping😊
I leave everything else on default, but I put the Detail to -7.
Okay thanks, that was realy realy helpful.
Greatings from germany
Hey Gerald! Any reason you recorded in HLG3 instead of HLG this time? In one of your earlier videos you said you preferred HLG.
HLG wasn't in the list. Only 1,2,3. And of those three, HLG3 is the closest to HLG. So, I went with that.
@@geraldundone Makes sense! 💥 Those look fantastic, but no FCPX.
Hi, I love the look of the Film Convert Nitrate film stock emulations, however, over the last several months whenever I apply FCN to a clip it completely slows down Final Cut Pro X.
Why is this?
Other plugins don’t slow my system down in this way.
The rendering takes forever - even if I turn off FCPX background rendering, FCN grinds my FCPX to a halt.
What could be causing this and what do you recommend to improve this?
Thanks.
Hi there, sorry for the late reply - hope we helped fix the issue. We've just released Nitrate for FCP fully native with the new M1 Macs, and the performance is great :)
@@FilmConvert no, the issue continues. Are you saying there is a general update for FilmConvert Nitrate for FCPX, or only for the new M1 Mac?
How much more pliable would c-log 8 bit 1080p off an eos r be for this type of grading? Would you notice a difference?
I'd expect to see similar results.
@@geraldundone Coolio. Thanks!
ya know mate, you're crazy likeable
Will film convert work with BMPCC 4K RAW footage??
Hi there, sorry for the late reply - yes, FilmConvert works with BRaw footage, you just need to set the Clip Settings to either Gen4 or Gen5 color science
Question; would you still use the leeming lut above this?
Paul leeming says just to use HLG1 why do u use 3?
No, generally I wouldn't mix the two together. Very different purposes.
@@geraldundone Thank you for the reply. Means alot. Do you have an answer for the HLG3 over 1?
How did you expose here? In the middle?
Yeah, mostly. Some of the shots I did on the fly and went by eye, but mostly toward the middle.
Would like to see this applied to a Blackmagic camera in raw. Sony Camera's just don't have the cinematic look out the box. They are very video-ish
Which lens did you use for this test ?
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and Sony 90mm Macro.
When using HLG on a Sony camera, we tended to use BT.2020 with the Leeming Lut, but now you recommend using Rec709 for FilmConvert Nitrate. Could you please explain this?
Just what each recommends. I typically follow the guide when reviewing these things.
FilmConvert Nitrate doesn't support full HDR grading yet, so if you're intending to deliver an HDR output, stick with a full HDR workflow or use ACES.
Please tell me where is it crack or fkv file??
Cool
