So many people just assume that Charlie's hybrid instrument and playing style is the unique thing about him and his sound. But that's just one element--the incredibly thoughtful and deep appreciation of rhythm of groove he puts into his work is what actually sets him apart as a musician that will go down in history as a singular kind of genius. Just a beautiful mind at work on the guitar.
There are some players who are just a step above everybody else. Then there's Charlie Hunter. Scarily good, if somewhat unapproachable technique, and very musical with it. Awesome video.
Man this interviewer sucks! You've got this amazing guitarist sitting next to you who's also a super nice guy doing his best to make the atmosphere a little lighter.. and he's acting like he doesn't want to be there! I'll interview you Charlie!
Maybe he isn't getting rounds of applause but... maybe the audience they are in total awe and respect or so intently absorbed listening they are amazed almost in shock intimidated or entranced? Charlie is not your ordinary guitar man maybe they can't believe this seem less miracle guitarist right in front of their eyes ...LIVE no loops just that man's hands and
Always felt like I'm listening to a Swinging Hammond B3 player when Charlie Hunter plays. But I love his Stride Piano feel as well. Seems like his bass playing and groove are the key!
Saw the original trio when they played the Primus New Years Eve Freak Out and was blown away! It was actually Les Claypool who did his first cd before he signed to Blue Note. I've seen variations of CH but the first trio was my fave because Jay Lane is the greatest drummer I've ever seen. The Quartet was awesome RIP. Charlie Hunter and Buckethead are the most technically sound guitarists I've seen in my 44 years. I can't compare them so I don't. I love me some love CH though
I love the whole Budweiser lick thing. thats what I tell people, soloing is like a paragraph, and not a run on sentence. You need time to breathe, and let people appreciate what you do, Derek trucks has a similar mindset on that too.
Dear Interviewer, 17:47 you hear that?, and the subsequent laugh?... that's a musician surprising himself. At 18:32 he's just trying to impress you now. 18:38 That's you looking like Garfield on a breakfastless Monday. Some excitement/enjoyment. That's all I'm saying. You're at a private clinic as part of your _job_... if you're not enjoying it, you're doing it wrong.
I don't know about you, but I think this is mesmerising, like Anton Mesmer. CHunter's explanations offered in this clip hit the mark for me. Beautiful. Accurate. Incisive. Insightful.
Drumplayer, bassplayer and superb guitarist all in one,,,, at at the same time... I am dumbfundled by his talent.. Its like I use 8% of my brain and he uses all 100%
Very true. John called him up to Avatar Studios in New York to collaborate, and go in with no plan, yet end up recording an album cut. The fruit of their efforts was "In Repair", from Mayer's 'Continuum'. The film is here on YT, and is a nice insight into how both John, and Charlie, came up with an outstanding tune by just bouncing ideas off each other for an afternoon. Hunter is a virtuoso, and the master of a unique, and gorgeous fusion instrument. Incredible talent.
He's dropping some excellent, high-impact wisdom here for guitarists: Playing the drums is really the most important aspect of this. People who would be best suited to play this thing are drummers - because they would understand the counterpoint more easily. How the rhythms work together...
I don't nearly use my pinky and ring finger as much as he does. His skills are mindblowing. I wish I got into his music earlier into my guitar playing.
I have been watching Charlie for years. Best show was in Joe's Pub in manhattan maybe 6-7 years ago. Sick player, so smooth. Partially taught by Satriani by the way. It must be awesome to be able to drop tunes like that.
I can't believe how the interviewer just sits there next to Charlie, witnessing some of the most beautiful and mind blowing playing ever and not even like bob his head or tap his foot or anything lol.. maybe intimidated, no idea.. but man what an absolutely delicious groove.. fuck.
haha dude this is sweet. at first i was like wtf is with the guitar and the intro tone didn't sound that good (to my ear) then he started playing in with all the bass frequency and it all fit very nicely together. awesome player
its a fanfret the idea is similar to that of a grand piano, the lower strings are longer giving you better tone and more sustain. a 7-string has a low b below the low e giving you another position for inverting chords and different voicings
You’re sounding great! To use your word, Bitchin! I met you, and your wonderfully philosophical mom, back in the 90s when you were 8 stringed. Then and now, to me, your concept, and playin are like someone 3times your age, yet ageless, because your the only one that does this. I want to say you sound like 2 cats, but really it’s 1 playin like Jimmy Smith, Kikkin Bass, but even more unique, because it’s not organ. I believe I’m just stating the obvious, but you really grabbed me with the drummers perspective, because you did describe most guitarists. Live long and prosper bro
Damn straight. This guy is a living legend and is doing things that I don't think anyone is. Also extremely humbler down to earth and constantly growing.
whereas guitar players we tend to spent a lot of time trying to learn how to blaze through this this thing real fast but never really come to terms with the fundamentals of the music which is the rhythm & groove. A drummer would be able to do this and that's why i try to play the drums everyday a little bit.
They are called fanned frets. And each string has its own scale length. There are basses made the same way. Playing is supposed to feel more natural on these instruments.
I know my opinion isn't worth much, but I've found that as a guitarist, I get all of my best ideas from drummers. Jamming with a drummer is the most valuable tool one can have as a guitarist. It seems that most guitarists have turned into wannabe Vocalists. It's like they think the world revolves around what *they* do, but that's simply not the case. Needless to say, I don't get along with other guitarists very well lol. When I'm writing, I don't want another guitarist in the room. What I want is a drummer to bounce ideas off of. They're the best.
So many people just assume that Charlie's hybrid instrument and playing style is the unique thing about him and his sound. he came into the place I work and picked up a 52 tele.. he still blew us away.
I totally agree. His technical brilliance occasionally outshines his INCREDIBLE time, rhythm, and groove. He could syncopate a three minute egg.
Nobody else with a 7-string sounds like Charlie Hunter. Decades of work in those fingers.
There are some players who are just a step above everybody else. Then there's Charlie Hunter. Scarily good, if somewhat unapproachable technique, and very musical with it. Awesome video.
17:46 always brings me back to this video. Laughing at your own chops. Brilliant
This man is a conduit to exude pure music. An absolute gift to the world.
Never have I been inspired quite as I am now. Charlie Hunter is pure magic.
I love it when he says 'right!?' while playing
Man this interviewer sucks! You've got this amazing guitarist sitting next to you who's also a super nice guy doing his best to make the atmosphere a little lighter.. and he's acting like he doesn't want to be there! I'll interview you Charlie!
man the whole room is dead, awkward as!
Yeah Shadrick is shit - glad John Bolinger does most of the interviews now. You ever see the Satchell Shadrick Rig Rundown? Painful.
Maybe he isn't getting rounds of applause but... maybe the audience they are in total awe and respect or so intently absorbed listening they are amazed almost in shock intimidated or entranced?
Charlie is not your ordinary guitar man maybe they can't believe this seem less miracle guitarist right in front of their eyes ...LIVE no loops just that man's hands and
The bass, the rhythm, and the lead. Charlie is the man.
Great player, and as an old drummer turned guitar player, I get everything he says. He is to be heard and learned from. Seems like a good man.
such a talented individual, broken down so many barriers in extended range guitar.
Always felt like I'm listening to a Swinging Hammond B3 player when Charlie Hunter plays. But I love his Stride Piano feel as well. Seems like his bass playing and groove are the key!
what a sense of music and sense of humor in his playing.
I hadn't heard of Charlie Hunter before today and am seriously impressed.
This guy's influence on John Mayer is so huge that they even have the same way of talking in interviews.
wow , thank you Premier Guitar for this kind of interviews, Charlie is amazing and i didnt knew of him before . Greetings from Mexico

very informative, thanks for sharing PG!
Still amazing after all these years (:
I love the whole Budweiser lick thing. thats what I tell people, soloing is like a paragraph, and not a run on sentence. You need time to breathe, and let people appreciate what you do, Derek trucks has a similar mindset on that too.

Loved this; thanks for all the great videos you guys put out!
So refreshing!!!!! I love videos like this where its an interview and performance!!
I appreciate this so much! Analysis of music through the ages is perfect
this guy is amazing. He really has an ear for melody
charlie hunter...this guy can groove! holy cow! the instruments gets meaningless. only the music counts.
Gotta give the interviewer some love. He did a good job and Charlie Hunter seemed liked he had a good time. Awesome stuff.
One of the baddest dudes on the planet!!!
I could listen to Charlie all day.
What a great guitarist!
I don't know about you, but I think this is mesmerising, like Anton Mesmer. CHunter's explanations offered in this clip hit the mark for me. Beautiful. Accurate. Incisive. Insightful.
Also, second row aisle seat.
Right? Why is everyone asleep? Don't the people at Premiere Guitar like guitar? I'd love to see that up close. Charlie is awesome.
He's mind blowing.
Ugh! When is this guy going to write a book? Seriously. I need that.
"Every culture has their version of it." So true.
He's one of a kind! ❤
You guys are the best!
Charlie Hunter: if you're gonna play a blues lick you have to emulate every part of the band as well
me: *sweats*
What a great player
Drumplayer, bassplayer and superb guitarist all in one,,,, at at the same time... I am dumbfundled by his talent.. Its like I use 8% of my brain and he uses all 100%
Incredible !!!
That was fantastic! Thank you for making this happen!

what a great guitar, and smooth playin..
this guy... sooo gooooooooooood! Makes me want to keep practicing

I'm not even a guitarist and I learned more from this then I did in college
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 7 May 2021. The Day I discovered Charlie Hunter for the first time... WHAAAAAAAATTTTT!?!?! Holy Shit.
This guy is the BEST!!
That is officially the coolest guitar I ever saw.
how good is he!!!!!
such talent and such guitar face
I love this....whole new way of looking a 7 or 8 string.
I don't nearly use my pinky and ring finger as much as he does. His skills are mindblowing. I wish I got into his music earlier into my guitar playing.
this guy is on a whole...notha..level.
He is sooooo unbelievable good!

Hunter has to work harder with this interviewer and audience than anything he does on guitar.. a true pioneer of the instrument
I once treated my late wife to Sarah Vaughan at the Blue Note and she LOVED it... only reason I went was to see Joe Pass back her up
haha dude this is sweet. at first i was like wtf is with the guitar and the intro tone didn't sound that good (to my ear) then he started playing in with all the bass frequency and it all fit very nicely together. awesome player
Dood's freaking insane, in the best possible way
I dig. I'd like to see this with more artists doing these.
i really enjoy watching this video.. wish i could play like that
Great guitarist
its a fanfret the idea is similar to that of a grand piano, the lower strings are longer giving you better tone and more sustain. a 7-string has a low b below the low e giving you another position for inverting chords and different voicings
It's actually a Jeff Traugott. His 8 strings were Novax, but his latest, the 7 you see in this vid, was built by Jeff Traugott.
as impressive as his left hand is, his right blows me away even more
This guy is a band
I used to think we had a good break room at work, now I realize how uberlame it is after watching what these guys get to have in there break room...
I swear even the cameraman moves with the swing groove...
he is playin the basspart + guitar , nice
How many music makers in in his hands? Multiple individual brains and finger independence of a entire band.
The vibe of the audience and is a little lackluster. Charlie is mesmerizing
thanks PG!

Do people actually know how difficult his style is to play?!?!?! Living legend
Damn straight. This guy is a living legend and is doing things that I don't think anyone is. Also extremely humbler down to earth and constantly growing.
are there any reasonably priced versions of this interpretation of guitar in the market?
good advice man thank you
Crazy good.
HA his face is priceless when he's fingertapping 12:56
what a class act

SRO I wish I was in attendance!
Charlie hunter is great...
You should try try "Isn't she lovely" by Stevie Wonder!!...great playing man!!...
They are called fanned frets. And each string has its own scale length. There are basses made the same way. Playing is supposed to feel more natural on these instruments.
I love Rebecca!!!!!
if u ever hear dis properly,ul understand where john mayer gets his percssv style,neon,etc...charlie you the man

love you too buddy
Put a mic to him make a "beat box" too... Insane play and musicality!
Right?
+gilles coreysghost You know?
what is the name of that guitar?
First 1:13 - "Hey, I can play that." 1:14 through end of song - "Hey, I can't play that."
i have got no clue, i know he said it in the video but i didn't catch it
I wonder what sort of amp he uses, because he's got both guitar and bass pickups, or does he split it between a two amps?
+Joseph Samuels he split it between 2 amps, his guitar got bass pickups on its low strings and guitar pickups on its high strings.
Charlie and Tuck!
Those frets trip me out
What kind of guitar is that
2:10...was he there to lighten the mood before the execution?
Awesome, he also recorded a song with John Mayer :)
Lets be real…. Charlie Hunter’s legacy is far bigger than simply working with John Mayer on a song.
is that mary spender at 2:29
