Speeding? Don't trust your car's speedo? Why not? Is my speedometer inaccurate? Well, yes, probably. Speedometer Error is a DELIBERATE FEATURE enshrined by vehicle design regulations and built in by manufacturers ! But it's a little known fact of which most drivers are blissfully unaware. Are you one of them?

so if i go past a cop at the actual speed of my car and not follow the speedo would u get pulled over? as i’ve heard that the police have precise speedos

Correct. But you must be certain of your actual speed using a properly calibrated device if you want to overtake a police car. You can be certain that their speed readings are properly calibrated.

Speed cameras in QLD are set at 7 km over then you get a ticket. Info is from a cop that does overtime sitting in a speed van.

So if that info is correct, at a true speed of 117 your speedo could be displaying anything from 117 to 132 and still be compliant with ADR18. No excuse for getting a ticket on a country road in Qld then. ADR18 makes it harder for your average oblivious driver to get pinged for speeding. And add to that the tolerance that the various traffic enforcement authorities supposedly factor in. Thanks for the comment.

@@gnosismonk if you know from your gps that your true speed is 117 (and therefore just on the cusp of incurring a speeding fine in Qld), then under ADR18 your speedo could legally be overstating by up to +10% + 4. i.e (117*1.1) + 4 = 132.7. Then again your speedo could be completely accurate or somewhere in between. (Again, presuming that the rumour about Qld speed cameras has foundation - always do your own research).
