    One thing I love the most about jackie's fight scenes is that the guy isn't afraid to show that his character isn't the perfect fighter. We see he's outnumbered, forced to use the environment to his advantage, gets hit numerous times, and we see him bleeding at the end of this clip. Not many other martial artists of this time period did things like this to my knowledge at least.

    It's hard to believe this scene is only two and a half minutes long. So much action packed into so little time. This fight is more intense than a lot of 10 minute action sequences.

      Agree, that's why his fight scenes are so good, and he had (maybe still has) a super stunt team, super crew to work with. It wouldn't be possible without them.

  • @ReconciledByFaith
    @ReconciledByFaith 2 года назад +330

    This is probably the best one man vs group fight ever filmed. It's just so fast, creative, and painful. Perfect execution by Jackie and his stunt team, and he still had that elite level athleticism here that had already started to decline when he made it big in the American market in Rush Hour. As others have pointed out this is also about as realistic as it gets with choreographed group fights as he needs every bit of the environment, weapons, speed, skill, and wits here to come out on top and he takes a lot of punishment in the process. If this were treated as the paradigm that all other action sequences should strive for future action movies would be much better for it, but then, of course, you'd need actors actually capable of pulling these feats off with the sort of expertise that Jackie and his team could achieve.

      The other thing that makes a fight great is the actual actor/stuntman too. They have to have character...a character that distinguishes them from others. Bruce, jackie, jet and donnie all have their own styles which is what makes them popular to this day.

      In Jackie's autobiography he mentions how he injects some of the trauma of his youth into his movies. Not only does he struggle to survive his fight scenes, almost every Jackie Chan movie has a scene where he is tortured. He was subjected to a lot of corporal punishment when he was in the Peking Opera.

    Something I really like about Jackie's fight scenes that I don't see alot of people talk about is how you rarely see the bad guys wait their turn to strike and all try to rush him all out once instead of one at a time making it overall harder for Jackie's character. It makes it all the more satisfying and impressive when he is able to overcome the obstacles he's presented with and come out on top in the end.

    I don't normally like using the word balletic to describe fight scenes... but there really is no better word for how clean the execution of some of these movements are, much less the complexity of it all.

    • @9292098
      @9292098 3 года назад +8

      IMO balletic might actually be the right description here. Jacky Chan's action movies are unique (or at least at that point in time) in the sense that Jacky incorporates elements of Beijing opera into action sequences. Before him were the Bruce Lee's style action movies, in which fight scenes were more "turn-based": the protagonist hits the antagonist a few times, then antagonist returns punches and kicks, so on so forth. But in Jacky's action scenes you always see both parties offending and defending together. That's why there is a sense of fluidity and sort of like a dance/ ballet in his fight scenes.

    This is one of the reasons why Jackie is one of the greatest martial arts performers. Scenes like this grounds the audience.
    He’s greatly outnumber and is fully aware how bad the situation is; hence why he always runs away whenever he gets the chance, not because he’s a coward but because it’s stupid to face and fight THAT many people head on. Even with his skill and ability, he’s clearly struggling to keep up with all the chaos. This isn’t Jackie fighting, this Jackie defending himself.

    The special thing is, Jackie fights in a unique way on screen. Have you ever noticed that 95% of movie fight scenes involving outnumbered fights, there is only 1 guy actively fighting the main character while the others are just dancing, moving and waiting for their turn? Jackie fights several at once, gets hit and tries to overcome with obstacles and weapons (like a ladder lol) to turn the tides. Perfect display on screen!

  • @shman5000o

    Ultimately, in real life, odds are that in a 1 v 5 street fight the solo person is GREATLY bound to be obliterated if the solo person doesn't opt to just run away(also assuming the solo dude doesn't have firearm on him too, of course). Jackie and his crew heavily take this into account to make sure to make you believe that Jackie can do it himself, even if just barely. I really appreciate that all the "bad guys" really do their best to not allow the viewer to think "hey, why don't the other guys just dogpile on Jackie? It's a 5 v 1, it's should be easy to take him out!" They show that that they either struggling to get back in the fight by limping over after getting struck down or they show shots of the other guys booking it towards Jackie while Jackie is the middle of desperately trying to maintain every interaction as a 1v1 situation as much as he can.
    It also helps, like others have said, that Jackie is humanized in his fights. He's an expert fighter in his roles, but he's still a human that shares all the inherent weaknesses that any other human being does. He's no superhero, just an extraordinary human being. And that's what makes him and his crew all the more memorable in all his masterful action movies
    Man, I miss prime Jackie Chan. Hell, I miss the Golden era of 80s/90s action Hong Kong movies in general for that matter.

    Yes this is realistic and Jackie moves like a cat on speed but to say he is "not the best fighter but he never gives up"is totally wrong.This is poetry in motion at its best from a kung fu master.just look at that clean sidekick at 0:31,that jumping sidekick at 1:55 and that stick combo at 1:41.Jackie is the best of them all.

    Jackie Chan have one vs many almost in his every movie, and my favorite is "Rope fight" in Lady Rose and Mr. Cantoon, and he didnt affraid of showing weakness too, sometimes he lose and get lucky or need friend to outnumber the villain ...
