How to Buy a Used Car (AND GET A GOOD DEAL)

- Everyone remembers their first car! Today my good friend Seth and I go to look at a car he found for sale. We show how to go about looking at the car and etiquette. This 2000 Honda Civic Hatchback has some issues, which allowed us to get a good deal on the car. We show the order of operations to achieving the best deal possible.
Buying old Japanese cars in modern days is the way to go!
I spent the last 7 years building this 1990 Nissan 240sx from the ground up by myself. I swapped out the KA24e for a KA24de. Then once more for a RB25det out of a R34 Skyline and couldn't be happier. I have also converted the 240 to right hand drive, (which ended up saving my life!) After installing a few drift parts; such as a hydro E - Brake, and dual rear calipers, welded diff, solid suspension bushings and more, the car handled amazing. Surprisingly this S13 was able to drift and stay sideways perfectly despite the damage that was done to it.

What was your first car?
Franzys 240sx was her first car: ruclips.net/video/e4lPkcx-N-4/видео.html
The last car I bought: ruclips.net/video/FJvTzLLDaeY/видео.html
My first was my 4door ek, picked it up for 1700 about a year or two ago
1993 Mitsubishi Mirage 5 speed we threw my buddies old 4g63 in.
Car was absolutely terrifying to drive, but i got it for $250, put 100k on it, and sold it for $700.
Still miss it.
My first car was a 86 Monte Carlo
94 EG, with EUDM 1.3 carburated engine.. 75 massive horsepower, 343k kms (213k miles), with some compression issues (probably because of the high "mileage", so the top speed was 140km/h (about 94miles/h), but the rev limiter was crazy, no ecu to limit the revs.. more than 9k rpm in first gear
1974 Datsun Sunny mini truck (Datsun 1400 ute)
"How's it going?"
*proceeds to smash a front door*
🤣
Nice find, congrats Seth!
😅💀
Stock, low mileage and with a few flaws, the kind of best deal! Congrats Seth!
One advice I would add is to be QUICK to contact the seller AND go see the car, like don't even waste one minute, good deals sell super fast.
100%! Couldnt agree more! From the first message sent to purchase was 4 days!
I did this kind of negotiation when I bought my 99 Audi A4. The car was listed for $1500 with no 5th gear. After test driving it, finding LOTS of little issues with the car, I came away with it for $700. And on the way home, I was able to double clutch into fifth gear, and it has worked ever since.
This made me laugh. Idk why negotiating scares me so much
he looked sooooo happy that makes me smile like an idiot haha btw i love the rugrats t shirt from seth it's soooo cool!
After years of him hanging with us he finally got to experience his own connection to a car, so exciting!
Yea man. His smile was genuine! Took me back
Absolute weapon of a car! I remember getting my first car.. great feeling!
Right! What was your first car?
@@PrizzaMike 04 lancer ralliart, slapped a turbo on it and now she's my rally car, been replaced with my r31 skyline!
@@pope5459 oh man! That's awesome! Man that's definitely a dream car (R31) 🔥🔥
@@PrizzaMike bloody oath I'm lucky to get a Decent one for cheap over here in Australia, the price is definitely rising.
Love y’all lol y’all energy changed to pure optimism after the purchase .
Haha most definitely!
My first car was an e36 for 1.2k. I learned to drift it and will always remember it. Now i got another e36 but in coupe
Damn I remember when I bought my hatch for $800 mine was in worse condition though. Congrats to Seth👏🏽 can’t wait to see this car transform!
Great deal! 🔥🤘
I have bought several bottom of the barrel cars, just rough stuff. When I looked at a nice car with my buddy it was weird to see a car that wasn't full of red flags to ignore.
😅
Smart man. The 240 build will end at some point. Time to start thinking about the future of your channel, and future builds. Great job as usual.
Thanks man 💪🔥
My first car was 80's fiat uno 45s 999cc 45hp. was so much fun, i got to 115 mph with backwind, on long downhill stretch. i never forgot mine.
The energy of this channel
Is unbeatable 👀
💪😎
Mike you inspire me to work hard and to buy my dream car I watch all your vids and good luck on the 240!
🙌 🔥
congrats on the first car, you'll never forget it and its memories :) i bought a nb miata last year, it was listed for 1750. i talked him down to 950, politely explaining what still needs to be done and what my plans are. Making the seller feel that the car was going to a good home definitly helps!
Well wear, Seth. I was lucky enough to get a 3yr old 15k mile Comet blue hatch back in the day. I’ll never forget it and I’m sure you won’t forget yours.
we need more seth mane do a series with hatch!!
I still remember how i bought my 96 hatch. It was green from the trees, had a few dents in the front bumper, front fenders and in the hatch. But it was completely stock, had ran just a 100.000 miles, no bad sounds and for my surprise, no rust or rust repairs. It even had all the papers since it was bought brand new. Best 450 euros i've spend and still loving it.
I got a fully runnind and driving ek hatch for 500 bucks. The car had the original tires from 2000 on it. The original price for the car was 1000 bucks and got half off after explaining to him the dangers of old tires. I learned that 90 percent of older cars on the road dont have up to date tires so i always check that when buying a vehicle
Just bought my first car, a 1998 Toyota Avalon xls. Initially listed for 1900 but after talking a little on FB marketplace he messaged me saying if I can dig it out of the few feet of snow we had i can have it for 1400. I shoveled it out and after a test drive, and new battery I offered 1100 and (funny enough a tank of gas) and I got it. so happy with it! love your vids
Dude, people are ridiculous with selling cars. I am trying in vain to get this 08 Impreza 2.5i. literally the same car as mine, but it has a 5 speed. The for sale car has a blown motor and mine has a bad transmission. So obviously I would drop my motor in it, swap all the good parts on it.. you get it hopefully. Absolutely the perfect deal but he has it listed on marketplace for 4500. 😅😂😂
I offered him 1200 for it. And of course he said no but I was nice about it and told him to keep my info if he changes his mind. I hope he reconsiders because it's the perfect option for me!
Jeez that's such a high price for a blown car hahaha
I totally feel you man
@@PrizzaMike I wholeheartedly agree! I got an offer on my car. Given it's got a bad transmission the motor is fresh. That offer was 800 bucks! I said no cause I love the car but I get it. This guy obviously doesn't. Subaru owners are weird. 😂😂😂
I want another Honda so bad. I've been low-key looking for one for the right price
@@p_3_n_n_y ooooooo rejoining the dark side?
What Hondas are you looking into?
@@PrizzaMike any to be honest. I love a hatch but I'd be happy with a 4 door. I wouldn't care if it was a SOHC to be honest! I wanna do something in memory of my brother from another mother who passed away about 10 years ago.
@@p_3_n_n_y sorry to hear about your brother man :/
That really would be cool to do in memory of him 🔥
Congrats Seth! Looking forward to seeing some content of the repairs and upgrades!
My parents owned that Camry in white. It was the most reliable car ever made. They sold it to the state (CA BAR) for $1,500 in 2005. Car had 250k miles but still ran like a champ.
Damn what a great deal! I bought my first car for 1500 and it was an S15 it had quite a lot of rust but can easily repaired and it was running, the cluster aint working, and the oil is leaking i didnt stop working on it for 2 months now its good and in much better condition
The previous owner said he havent used it for 4 years but yea still a good deal for me
Congrats on first car. Great tips for new used car buyer video.
I bought a moped in mid 2019 for $400. I thought the price was a little high for a non running bike at the time. It turned out to be my best investment, I made my money back within the first year of commuting on it.
nice gesture offering the guy a ride home. i cant tell u how many times i could have used an offer like that after sellin a car
AYOOO this build is going to be lit😈
Facts 🔥
What a score guys awesome job
Congrats 🤙
The block off plate for the stereo is absolutely hilarious, First car was a 96 dodge neon
That's a great deal!!! And all killer points on first time buying!!!
In todays market that’s a freakin steal! Congrats on your first car! I miss my ek hatch.
nice!! good deal on the hatch I've actually always wanted a 92-95 hatchback
I also bought my EK hatch, exactly a year ago. Im so happy with it. I paid 1000$ perfect condition, no rust + 2 sets of wheels.
Only 90hp but still fun! Anyways, congrats!
What a steal can't believe he really want from 3k to 1k can't wait to see what ya do to it
cant wait to see the ek build come along😍😍
sick video bro!
Congratz on the car man! 1k is a pretty good deal, I bought one 800$ 2 years ago that needed some repairs.
About the exhaust raspiness, it is because it doesn't have a catalytic converter!
So sick 🔥🔥🔥 you should definitely do more videos with him
Me and my mom has used the full gas tank tactic for awhile. Even her latest Subaru Impreza, we did the same thing. Once last owner didn't wanna drop price anymore, we said full gas of tank then, aaand it was deal.
Haha that's awesome! 🔥😅
@@PrizzaMike In here it's actually pretty big deal. Gas price is 2-2.5 times higher than you have. So it's big money save! :D
When I bought my current XE10 lexus, I did the tank of gas thing too haha. That's like 150 bucks off.. I also got him to throw in his roofracks, winter wheels with new tyres and 6 spare coils, so about 750 in total. I then sold the towhitch which altogether got me to about 1000 off, or 20% of the total price! Paid for my immediate mods, a fujitsubo catback and cusco rear sway
When I go to look at cars I always look at easily removeable accessories I won't want that I can take off and immediately sell, that's my favourite trick to get a little more wiggle room. OE wheels you'll replace, towhitches, hood bras, good condition stock exhausts you'll replace, etc
If it's old and japanese and a bit more expensive, i'd also suggest meeting at a garage where you can quickly put it on a lift to properly check for rust
The moment the dude tapped his door in your car you know he is willing to walk away from the car he is selling. Also you got stickers?! Man im getting at least two for my babies!
Great video Mike my first car is a 69 Ford mustang I bought when I was 15 and I’m 61 today and I still have it😃👍🏽😊🤙🏽
That is honestly so awesome! 🔥
@@PrizzaMike when my granddaughter come’s of age to get her licenses it will be her first car and I hope she will do the same 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
Now that was some shrewd negotiation!
My first car that I bought still have is my 1997 Bmw 328i. The owner posted it on Craigslist and the only way I was talking to the owner was by email, definitely felt pretty sketchy but took a chance. Met the lady at a shop where she had it towed, told me the shop was going to charge her 1000+ for a radiator. Took me 5 mins to figure it was just a coolant reservoir. Came back the next day with a roll of duck tape and filled it up with water and drove it home For 500$
That's awesome! 😅
Ek coupe w/ full H series swap. Bought in 2012 ❤️. Gone, but not forgotten.
Mike, bud my very first car was a hatch Lada (russian made) given by my dad back in a day. I wasn't even smart enough to make it running so I scrapped it, next one was a Renault 19 hatch 1.8is quick beast but had a overheating problem, due to lack of knowledge and funds sold it. All of this was even before I had my license then in 2008 moved to UK, (still no license) but eager to drive so bad... bought a Peugeot 106 1.5L diesel from a shady guy. when bringing it home clutch cable snapped (I believe it was shorter one from different model) my r.i.p. brother limped it home grinding gears like mad seriously. had it for a year probably then sold it to a fresh driver (female), from it and some from my pocket bought a Mazda mx5 soft top eunos 1.6L doch automatic (still with no driver license to drive) had it for half a year believe, then I had to come to homeland like really bad, Sold it at a auction for pennys. I still regret it... Back home got my driving license then bought a 1998 Audi A6 2.4L overheated it badly from bad maintenance (still have it to this day) now I daily drive a Subaru Impreza wagon 2.0L non turbo
Hello, Hi, Labas from *Lithuania* I f*****g love you dedication towards 240sx. Take a good care of Fran' I mean it.
Nice deal. Gotta be in the right place at the right time for deals like that.👍❤️🇨🇦
Myself I built a 66 VW beetle when I was 15 and at 16 I drove it to get my license.
Heck yeah! Vsm is a good color! My dad's hatch came with a wood cargo cover too.
The wood cargo cover was pretty neat! Haha
My first car was and is my 1998 Nissan 240SX S14 Kouki with a fully built rb25det 🥰🥰🥰
I managed to get one in the UK about 6 years ago EJ 1.4 Manual Hatch, 43,000 for £800 and a 12 month MOT. Bone stock, with zero rust!!
My first car was a 91 mitsubishi eclipse 4g63 saddest moment is when I had to sell then later on picked up a 94 eg hatch with a b20v swap and some other cool mods
My initial reaction was , "Oofs...that's a lot of work for a $3000 car. $1500 maybe." Y'all beat my estimate by $500 plus full tank of gas, which is very expensive right now.
I'm looking forward to see more of this car, perhaps a video of rust repair, a new radiator, etc.
Raspy exhaust = street cred (just my opinion) Reminds me of a Honda scooter or something.
Congratulations to your friend on his first car. It's definitely a day he won't forget. Almost feels like 'how it feels to chew 5 gum'? Just kidding.
Great idea on the service log...I wish I had done this with my car(s) years ago.
Thanks for the video upload! Made my day!
Great deal
Had someone come check out my WRX for sale. Gave me a poor ETA of their arrival time as well as being late. I walked out of my house to grab a jump pack and THEY WERE OPENING THE DOORS TO THE CAR BEFORE I WAS EVEN THERE. I was in disbelief and pissed, but kept my cool since they where a possible buyer.
He definitely got a good deal a hatch that condition would sell for like 3-4K all day over here in the east coast even it being auto 💀 I know because before I bought my 5th gen prelude I was looking at ek coupes and I’d see hatch’s actually sell for that much with similar mileage
such a legend
I love how he asked if the seller wanted a ride home haha
7:10 what a nice e61 ..i have on of those ..best car ever had
He needs a nice weekender garage sticker on that hatch as well ;)
got ej9 here in finland for 1150euros (in this condition they go 2-3k here) with 3 set of wheels, 130 thousand kilometres on the clock and full service book with zero skips on oil changes etc. Barely any rust and no wear on the interior. It was a steal for sure. Drove 4h to get it from other side of finland :D. It only really needs timing belt change because it is now +10years old belt and it is just playing with luck at this point.
Good deal! I saw my old f23 ek for sale
great deal, i want eg or ek as my first too :)
NICE!!
Nice video man
Since you mentioned a paint job for a Integra, a good content for a video would be a spray paint her. It would be Nice to see her been prepared for the paint
thats sweet gotta love a honda for a first car! Hit up the junkyard for the swap!
16:31 You can feel the pureness in the laughs... Damn... 😅
My b7 audi a4 was listed for $5500 and i was able to walk away with it for $3600 and my current e46 was listed for almost 8000 and i bought it with no wheels for $2600 :))
The timing, I am in the proxxes of getting a Toyota Corrola Hatch from my uncle for a staggering 0$. Epic.
Hell yeah seths the goat
First car was a 97’ 328is 5spd e36 that had 203k miles for $1100 🤙
Best youtubeur 🔥🔥🔥
Man said $3,000 for that XD kek! Glad y'all got a good deal on it!
Just picked up a 95 eg sedan for 700, runs and drives alright with the little d15 but I plan to do a k swap
i didnt know that hatches are this valuable, i bought my in poland this year in mint shape, allmost no rust with 100k miles, for something like 1500$
I just grabbed an ek hatch for 2700 bunch of goodies and super clean hard to find now a days
Yesss neww vidsd
Nice to see ek hatch on the content, hopefully he k swap it ;)
When I test drove my s14, i took it on the freeway and made sure it got up to 100 mph😂
The coolant could have been recently topped off and spilled over, especially considering the oil had just been changed maybe they had it ready to sell
OR! Blown headgasket. :'D
It would be pushing alot more coolant
@@TheMontagGarage ? What? I don't think we are on same page.
bought my 92’ Prelude Si December 1st last year as my first car and I kinda wish I did some of the things you showed us in the video. I definitely could of talked down the price a bit more 😅
Now you know for any future projects! 🔥
Looking forward when I will buy my first car ... In UZBEKISTAN
Runs and drives for 1000 and it’s a Honda. Good deal with just that, then your getting a ek? Absolute deal❤️
I definitely wanna see the manual swap be done to this thing
My first and only car is a 1989 integra, got it for 440 bucks, but it honestly wasn't much of a steal considering it needed $1200+ and am 3k deep now
My most memorable trade was when I trade my s13 for a e30 coupe. I made the guy add cash and gta5. The best part was he wasn’t 18 yet so his mom had to buy it 😂😂
can't go wrong with a Civic for a first car
This is what I love about the US. You can buy a Civic for less than 1k. (R16k here in SA) Here you can get a stuffed MK1 VW Golf for 1k but then its rusted, not running and no title. hahahaha
Great steal and is bone stock. Small minor fixes n some good body work.
hi Mike I'm thinking about buying a integra (don't know if I spelled it right) but I wanted to know what model of the four doors are a good model and good year to buy
1000 was a good deal for that. There is a guy on ebay who sells braided rear brake and fuel line replacements. Highly suggest em.
I thought so too!
And awesome! We'll have to look into that!
Bought my 370z used and got a deal at dealership on it and free deliver to south Carolina from North Carolina
1 more to the list 🤘🤘🤘 its allways nice to buy a car... And hope it wont kill you on the 1 day 🤣🤣 its just us car folk 🤣
Hell yah he got a good deal
Manual swap is the first thing you need to do with this car (and also make a video on how to do it)
Most definitely!
Will do 💪🔥
First thing I always do when getting a new car is steering wheel cover
What app do o use for keeping the data of ur car?
Keeping the D series or going B?
"size doesn't matter" (his small exhaust: it sure does!
