This version of the song has different lyrics, as if the singer is observing the guy from "Foster the People's" version. Foster never said it was about a school shooting, but about a kid losing his mind. It's a song more about this kid's thoughts and threats, it never implies that the murders actually have taken place.
I interperate this version of the song that the shootings did take place and that this kid is dead now. The singer has regrets, she "could have shown this kid the road", led him away from doing what he did. I believe the music video is an imagination of how things could have been, if only she had stopped him from doing it. Obviously they played together as kids.

It's an even scarier song than the original. Some sentences send shivers down my spine. The scariest part is when they sing "I saw his face from behind the door, a look so pure, I could've sworn, It's not so funny, it's just a mess". You can imagine a teenager hiding behind a school door with a narrow and oblong glass. A teenager who looks through a door and sees another teenager approaching with a rifle in his hands...

I love foster the people- pumped up kicks, but I absolutely love that this song is more of a 2nd perspective of a victim of the shooting. Someone who knew the shooter. "I saw his face from behind the door, a look so pure, I could have sworn. I use to lie, I could have shown this kid the road." Someone who felt regret that they didn't reach out to the shooter. I took this video as a what could have been, if the shooting hadn't happened. Very sad. Both songs are amazing, love them both.

Yeah, like - this one is the more friendly version of the grim original. I just listened to it and It makes me actually want to shoot up my school (not because I'm bad but because everyone else there is a scumbag with a few exceptions, Ill tell the good guys and the teachers to stay at home ;) ) while this one is...pretty nice. Makes you remember the good ol' times.
