It is also very good to hear people with such a healthy relatioship that they did not start that way. They had both a lot of preconceived ideas about a lot of things, and they had to work through them, and they went to therapy, to arrive at that point. It shows that you don't have to be perfect, you can become exactly how you need to be with help of other people. And that working on a relationship, going through hard times, is not stupid.

Bell's description of her upbringing as "Pleasantville" hit me. I grew up the same way and it doesn't make for a good, or congruent, introduction into the real world.
This resonates with me tremendously. Navigating the grey has been one of the singular most difficult thing I had to do as an adult. Still learning. Still growing.
That's great that people like you exist, but strange to me. I am a writer and I live in the grey. Literally. It's hard for me to imagine people not seeing everything as shades of grey. It's also frustrating at times, people who see everything as black and white.
She's elegantly but eloquently carrying the philosophical mantle of Aristotle and Plato. She's about to reveal to us all the intricate moral loopholes of a shifting universe. She's the ying to our failing yang. She's dang dang dang.
This is so relatable it makes me want to cry... like Kirsten, I had a very strong mindset in terms of seeing everything in black and white. I was raised in a good environment surrounded by good people, and I grew up thinking that everyone/everything that wasn't in the category of what I thought was "good" was automatically "bad". I grew up with that mindset until I was a freshman in high school and my parents moved our family to a new city that wasn't so good and proper... I immediately thought everyone at my new school was "ratchet" just because they acted so differently to the people I was used to. I told myself that I would just focus on my studies for the next four years and not make any friends, because if I do they would tarnish my sweet and innocent personality. Fuck, was I wrong lmao. I was exposed to so many people from all different backgrounds, and it made me scared because I met some really nice people and later I would find out they used drugs and drank or something. Everything was out of my comfort zone and I just didn't know what to do with myself... thankfully I met a bunch of great people who really opened my eyes and helped me see that not everyone you meet in life is purely "good" or "bad". Just because someone makes mistakes does not make them a bad person... we are all humans who deserved to be defined by our character, not our actions. I'm so thankful of my school for helping me become more open minded and I'm so glad there's celebrities like Kristen who are great role models to people everywhere.
Some people also have horrible upbringings with no support network. People often don't have the mechanisms to cope, and turn to who is around or try to numb themselves. I think anyone willing to accept the reality of what people are, are much fuller people than those that judge and want to be in a bubble. A lot of people I'm closest to have had real struggles, and they are there for me the most, and so much more compassionate and appreciative because of it.
I agree until I got to the point of character versus actions. I do think our actions define us, because people are so glib with words and we live in a world of buzz words, and manipulation through words and images. But actions seem to me to be more solid, something I can really see and this when thinking for example, of a political candidate, I think, “what have you DONE for this community”, for example. However, certainly all of us are human and it would be near I,possible to find someone that did not goof up, take a wrong turn, err and err again in life. Perfection is not in our nature. yet for me, words are tricky.
How sweet can a thing be, that she saw so much in Dax that she opened up her world view to accept that good people make mistakes but that doesn't define their good. Her love made her grow.

The irony of this whole video: it's in black & white lol. I adore Kristen Bell and always have. We have so much in common actually. Like her I grew up in a similar circumstance where my family was incredibly religious and was taught everything was either right or wrong, no in-between. Also I grew up in a very quaint little town where essentially everyone was your neighbor and knew your life story. When I went out into the so-called real world, I had a different perspective than let's say someone who was raised in inner city New York or Chicago. Like her, I was taught drugs were bad, that you only drank when the occasion called for it, every Sunday you went to church and your entire family sat down to eat dinner together (no exceptions). That was my life. If I were to have met someone like Dax Shepard, I probably wouldn't have given him a chance like Kristen did.
@@cj2130 My parents raised my siblings and I with Christian morals and values in mind. As a Christian myself, I find absolutely nothing wrong with that. We're they strict with us? Definitely! In their defense, though, it was because they wanted us to go out into the world with the same foundation of great Christian values and morals they were raised with. Unfortunately by the time we were adults, the world had began to fall away from Christianity (something very easy to see now). So today those morals and values they raised us with come off as "high maintenance", "uppity", "judgmental", etc. And my parents come off as extremely controlling and tyrannical. At least that's how it's viewed by a society that lacks a Christian upbringing. I actually had a wonderful childhood that I wouldn't trade with anyone. See not only were my parents very Christian, but they were very wealthy. I'm the youngest in a family with, not even exaggerating, millions of dollars. My siblings and I grew up in a mansion and got everything we wanted. It was a very privileged upbringing. Now I am actually guilty of complaining about how incredibly controlled my childhood was. What I realize now is that I have no room to complain. My life was fantastic growing up, truly. I honestly don't know what it's like to struggle at all. Yet there are people I know personally who really struggled (for example, only being to take one shower a month because they couldn't afford their hot water bill). I grew up in a family where we didn't just have the basic necessities; we had whatever we wanted. I would come off as a hypocrite if I complained about that.

She is one of the handful of good hearted people in the world we NEED in order to keep our sanity and love of each other alive as humans. Cynics, realists and negative people are all a part of the balance but people like her keep us truly balanced as a society. We are lucky for having them and even more so that after living in our shit world they still manage to keep their amazing perspective of life and the universe as a whole. I just feel like over the years with global communication, technology and mass media we have lost a lot of those people to pressures and over stimulation to all of the things in the world to the point that all it becomes is a blur of negativity.
So relatable. I grew up thinking there are squeaky clean folk and bad evil ones. But everyone's both great and terrible and that was so damn hard to accept, but now I think that's just what makes humans so beautiful and interesting.

I find it interesting that being raised religiously (assuming Christian) the idea of forgiveness was strange to her. Is that how bad religion is in parts of the US, that they've completely forsaken the most basic ideas of forgiveness that exist in the gospels? I also love hearing her speak so candidly about all this. Such a modern enlightened tone to her.
Jervina K. No, this is how Christianity really is. Jesus may forgive, but God is not as forgiving, with millions of rules to get into heaven. It's not as simple as be good. He's a very jealous, angry, and spiteful God. I know humans kinder than that. Christians should have just stuck with Jesus.
Jervina K. Also, they're nothing alike, God and Jesus. Old Testament is a dictator's handbook, and the New Testament is suddenly all about forgivness. Critical thinking is really needed when reading The Bible, yet not often utilized, unfortunately. People know it's filled with a ton of inconsistencies, contractions, and crazy behavior, but they overlool it all by turning to Jesus to cover up all the horrible stuff found elsewhere.
I do not think forgiveness was strange to her, just maybe an abstract concept that was not grounded to a concrete reality. When raised in a religious environment you are taught to see the world in black and white, because you are a kid so they teach you in simple terms, good people go to heaven, bad people don't, how do you know who is who? the ten commandments, and so on, also that God is the one who grant forgiveness when you make a public declaration of faith... and as she said, she lived a very protected childhood, so she did not have opportunities to really question what she was just learning on paper. Later, when you grow up and go out to the world, you begin to confront your experiences with what is supposed to be and what it is, it is no longer a religion learned by ear it becomes something more alive and it is when one matures spiritually, like Job 42:5 "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee" With the new experiences comes new information and one grows when confronting the old with the new. How does one do not get lost on the road? if you are a believer: with faith, letting ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit. This process is personal and everyone lives it in their own way and at their own time, in the end the fact that her vision expanded and complemented i think is the proof of her personal growth :)

I guess the one thing Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell shared at the start was their sense of humor. Amazing all the differences between them and how well it is working for them.
You have to learn the difference between those who have made mistakes in the past and those still making the mistakes or those who are so deep into it that they'll never change. Learn that humanity is full of beautiful and wonderful greys but that you've also got to trust your instincts if you think someone hasn't changed (yet).
Great show, because people don't have time to read autobiographies and oh my there are so many life stories that are so mindbending that people don't realize and the similarity and connections of everybody.
There is a movie theater in Birmingham, AL with a photo that claim is her and it’s blown up and framed on a wall. I’ve seen it and it’s clearly taken without permission as she was walking by and not aware of the photographer. May or may not be her but the fact that she did not sue or throw a fit about it seems to me a degree of class on her part. Class we desperately need in Hollywood.
It sounds like both of them merely needed a more balanced perspective on the world. If the person you are with does not challenge you it seems likely to me that stagnation may result.
Strong relationships are successful because of commitment, not compatibility. Compatibility is great, don't get me wrong! But Kristen and Dax, being so different, proves the importance of commitment through the storms.
I’m glad I watched this, I’ve just been ribbed off in a bar in Budapest. Now, I’m like OK, he knows what he has done, if he needs the money them I hope he does something good with it, pays a bill, buys his kids something they need. Maybe he will feel really bad and not do it again. I’m dyslexic and the money over here confused me a lot but most people were really honest and I’m thankful for that.
I see comments here about Christianity, and I offer my views as a contrast to what most people have said. The Old Testament starts off with the first man and women getting one rule to live by, and it's the easiest rule you could possibly think of ever. 'Eat any fruit you want except that one that grows on that tree right there.' How simple is that? Well, almost immediately they broke that one rule. Over time, God gave people more rules, and they broke every single one of them. Not only did the rules that God set up get broken, the most important rule got broken. People disregarded God. Even people who thought they were scrupulously serving and honoring God were twisting God's rules to suite themselves. Much of the Old Testament focuses on how God's people broke his rules and suffered for it. Well, if the way to heaven was by following rules, nobody was going to get there ever. If anyone was going to go, it would be up to God himself to do something about it. Right after the first rule was broken, and many more times as the bible grew, there were prophecies given about a time when things would be different. Jesus came along and fulfilled several of those prophecies. The biggest one was that man's penalty for breaking the rules was paid for by Jesus when he went to die willingly on a cross. After he died, he rose again from the grave to show both that he was/is God and has power over death. His resurrection also is supposed to show that all who trust in him will also be raised from the dead when Jesus returns to judge the earth. The rules that Christians have to live by to earn a trip to heaven are these: 1) you must trust that there is nothing a human can do to earn their way heaven, 2) Jesus paid for your penalty IF YOU TRUST THAT HE DID, 3) if those first things strike you as true, you will start to have different feelings about how you behave. You will not become a perfect person overnight, in fact, YOU WILL NOT BECOME PERFECT AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. However, you will engage in a struggle to improve as you live your life, and you will be grateful that Jesus paid your penalty. You will hear Christians say that you must repent when you become a Christian. The word means to have a change of direction, a change of mind, or attitude. It does not mean what many Christians try to make it out to be, it does not mean you will instantly be able to stop doing every bad thing you habitually do. The Christians who present it that way are still messing up, and they will never be perfect as long as they are alive in this age. Heaven will not be populated by good people who deserve to be there. It will be filled with people who are just as messed up as everyone else, but have had their penalty paid for by God. Many people who think they are Christians do not understand these things, and they will write below this to tell me how wrong I am. You will read what they say and think that Christians can't agree on anything, and we are all a bunch of jerks. I have to agree with that assessment myself. But that only proves what the bible really says, everybody is messed up deserve to pay their own penalty. You don't have to go that route because Jesus really did pay the penalty for all who believe that he did.

Helpful parenting tip. Raise your kids like she was raised. None of us have the be all end all oarenting book, all you can do is go for the best chance. We can be deviant weirdos but we owe it to our kids to give them the best foundation.
Agreed. She was raised with a clear picture of right and wrong and as she matured she understood the gray much better. She had positive role models and she is a great human being as a result. I bet her parents are also the kind of people who would give money to a poor person no question asked.

I find it interesting that being raised religiously (assuming Christian) the idea of forgiveness was strange to her.
Is that how bad religion is in parts of the US, that they've completely forsaken the most basic ideas of forgiveness that exist in the gospels?
I also love hearing her speak so candidly about all this. Such a modern enlightened tone to her.
Jervina K. No, this is how Christianity really is. Jesus may forgive, but God is not as forgiving, with millions of rules to get into heaven. It's not as simple as be good. He's a very jealous, angry, and spiteful God. I know humans kinder than that. Christians should have just stuck with Jesus.

Jervina K. Also, they're nothing alike, God and Jesus. Old Testament is a dictator's handbook, and the New Testament is suddenly all about forgivness. Critical thinking is really needed when reading The Bible, yet not often utilized, unfortunately. People know it's filled with a ton of inconsistencies, contractions, and crazy behavior, but they overlool it all by turning to Jesus to cover up all the horrible stuff found elsewhere.

I do not think forgiveness was strange to her, just maybe an abstract concept that was not grounded to a concrete reality.
When raised in a religious environment you are taught to see the world in black and white, because you are a kid so they teach you in simple terms, good people go to heaven, bad people don't, how do you know who is who? the ten commandments, and so on, also that God is the one who grant forgiveness when you make a public declaration of faith... and as she said, she lived a very protected childhood, so she did not have opportunities to really question what she was just learning on paper.
Later, when you grow up and go out to the world, you begin to confront your experiences with what is supposed to be and what it is, it is no longer a religion learned by ear it becomes something more alive and it is when one matures spiritually, like Job 42:5 "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee"
With the new experiences comes new information and one grows when confronting the old with the new.
How does one do not get lost on the road? if you are a believer: with faith, letting ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit.
This process is personal and everyone lives it in their own way and at their own time, in the end the fact that her vision expanded and complemented i think is the proof of her personal growth :)

I guess the one thing Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell shared at the start was their sense of humor. Amazing all the differences between them and how well it is working for them.
This girl is stunningly cute ..yes but also a rockstar once you find out she is "normal". I have even more of a crush on her now.

You have to learn the difference between those who have made mistakes in the past and those still making the mistakes or those who are so deep into it that they'll never change. Learn that humanity is full of beautiful and wonderful greys but that you've also got to trust your instincts if you think someone hasn't changed (yet).
I don't look at them and think they will last forever, but I admire that they are trying to make that happen, instead of giving in early and easy.

There is a movie theater in Birmingham, AL with a photo that claim is her and it’s blown up and framed on a wall. I’ve seen it and it’s clearly taken without permission as she was walking by and not aware of the photographer. May or may not be her but the fact that she did not sue or throw a fit about it seems to me a degree of class on her part. Class we desperately need in Hollywood.
It sounds like both of them merely needed a more balanced perspective on the world. If the person you are with does not challenge you it seems likely to me that stagnation may result.

I’m glad I watched this, I’ve just been ribbed off in a bar in Budapest. Now, I’m like OK, he knows what he has done, if he needs the money them I hope he does something good with it, pays a bill, buys his kids something they need. Maybe he will feel really bad and not do it again. I’m dyslexic and the money over here confused me a lot but most people were really honest and I’m thankful for that.

I see comments here about Christianity, and I offer my views as a contrast to what most people have said. The Old Testament starts off with the first man and women getting one rule to live by, and it's the easiest rule you could possibly think of ever. 'Eat any fruit you want except that one that grows on that tree right there.' How simple is that? Well, almost immediately they broke that one rule. Over time, God gave people more rules, and they broke every single one of them. Not only did the rules that God set up get broken, the most important rule got broken. People disregarded God. Even people who thought they were scrupulously serving and honoring God were twisting God's rules to suite themselves. Much of the Old Testament focuses on how God's people broke his rules and suffered for it. Well, if the way to heaven was by following rules, nobody was going to get there ever. If anyone was going to go, it would be up to God himself to do something about it. Right after the first rule was broken, and many more times as the bible grew, there were prophecies given about a time when things would be different. Jesus came along and fulfilled several of those prophecies. The biggest one was that man's penalty for breaking the rules was paid for by Jesus when he went to die willingly on a cross. After he died, he rose again from the grave to show both that he was/is God and has power over death. His resurrection also is supposed to show that all who trust in him will also be raised from the dead when Jesus returns to judge the earth. The rules that Christians have to live by to earn a trip to heaven are these: 1) you must trust that there is nothing a human can do to earn their way heaven, 2) Jesus paid for your penalty IF YOU TRUST THAT HE DID, 3) if those first things strike you as true, you will start to have different feelings about how you behave. You will not become a perfect person overnight, in fact, YOU WILL NOT BECOME PERFECT AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. However, you will engage in a struggle to improve as you live your life, and you will be grateful that Jesus paid your penalty. You will hear Christians say that you must repent when you become a Christian. The word means to have a change of direction, a change of mind, or attitude. It does not mean what many Christians try to make it out to be, it does not mean you will instantly be able to stop doing every bad thing you habitually do. The Christians who present it that way are still messing up, and they will never be perfect as long as they are alive in this age. Heaven will not be populated by good people who deserve to be there. It will be filled with people who are just as messed up as everyone else, but have had their penalty paid for by God. Many people who think they are Christians do not understand these things, and they will write below this to tell me how wrong I am. You will read what they say and think that Christians can't agree on anything, and we are all a bunch of jerks. I have to agree with that assessment myself. But that only proves what the bible really says, everybody is messed up deserve to pay their own penalty. You don't have to go that route because Jesus really did pay the penalty for all who believe that he did.

It might sound basic, but she speaks so much about growing up believing things are black and white, while being interviewed in black and white. She said she grew up in "Pleasantville", which is mostly in black and white. I don't know...
Helpful parenting tip. Raise your kids like she was raised. None of us have the be all end all oarenting book, all you can do is go for the best chance.
We can be deviant weirdos but we owe it to our kids to give them the best foundation.
Agreed. She was raised with a clear picture of right and wrong and as she matured she understood the gray much better. She had positive role models and she is a great human being as a result. I bet her parents are also the kind of people who would give money to a poor person no question asked.
